I feel like that was kind of the point - that by any sane reckoning, she should have gotten in. She was demonstrating hard work, intelligence, creativity, and any other possible skill you could want, but because she was a woman and not a “serious” woman who dressed conservatively, her appearance and her interests went against her unless she capitalized on them. The only way she could prevent her appearance and interests from harming her chances was to flaunt them.

Exactly the whole thesis of Legally Blonde is people not taking Elle seriously and her making them take her seriously without changing anything about herself.

Interestingly, Legally Blonde is one of the few films where the protagonist doesn’t have an arc, all the other characters do.
