Text of tweet under the cut because it is loooong.
But... Stochastic Parrots.
Timnit Gebru was fired from Google in December 2020 for refusing to retract a research paper, and every single warning that paper made about large language models has now happened at a scale the industry spent 4 years trying to make people forget about.
Her name is Timnit Gebru.
She co-led the Ethical AI team at Google. She co-wrote a paper called "On the Dangers of Stochastic Parrots" with Emily Bender at the University of Washington and two other researchers. The paper was 14 pages long. It was submitted to a top AI ethics conference. And it was the reason Google decided that one of the most senior Black women in AI research could no longer work there.
The story Google told publicly was that she resigned. The story she told, confirmed by 2,695 of her colleagues in an open letter, was that she was fired by email while on vacation because she refused to either retract the paper or remove her name from it.
The paper had not even been published yet.
Here is what she actually wrote, and why every prediction inside it has now come true.
The first warning was about scale itself. Bender and Gebru argued that training ever-larger models on ever-larger scrapes of the internet would produce systems that appeared fluent but had no actual understanding of language. They called these systems stochastic parrots because they would repeat patterns from training data with statistical confidence and zero comprehension. The paper predicted that this apparent intelligence would fool both users and developers into trusting outputs that were structurally incapable of being reliable.
This was 2020. GPT-3 had just come out. The paper predicted the hallucination problem before anyone had a word for it.
The second warning was about bias amplification. The paper documented in detail that internet-scale training data contains systematic overrepresentation of dominant viewpoints and underrepresentation of marginalized ones. The models would not just absorb this bias. They would amplify it, because the optimization process rewards confident outputs, and confidence in language patterns tracks frequency in the training set.
The prediction was that hiring tools built on these models would discriminate against women. That healthcare triage tools would underperform on Black patients. That loan approval systems would entrench inequality while presenting their decisions as neutral algorithmic judgment.
Every one of those things has now been documented in deployment.
Amazon's hiring algorithm penalized resumes that contained the word "women" in any context. Healthcare risk scoring algorithms used by major US hospitals were found to systematically underestimate the medical needs of Black patients. Apple Card's credit algorithm gave wives credit lines 10x lower than their husbands for the same financial profile.
The third warning was about environmental cost. The paper calculated that training a single large language model produced emissions equivalent to the lifetime output of 5 cars. The prediction was that the race to scale would create an environmental footprint that would eventually rival entire industries.
In 2024, Google's emissions were up 48% from 2019, and the company explicitly blamed AI infrastructure. Microsoft's were up 29%, same reason. Both companies have now quietly abandoned the climate commitments they were publicly celebrating the year Gebru was fired.
The fourth warning was about documentation. The paper argued that the training datasets being assembled were too large for anyone to actually audit. Nobody at Google, OpenAI, Meta, or any other lab could tell you with confidence what was in the data their models were trained on. This was not a temporary problem to be solved later. It was a permanent feature of the approach.
In 2023, researchers discovered that the LAION-5B dataset, used to train Stable Diffusion and other major image models, contained thousands of images of child sexual abuse material. The companies that had trained on the dataset had no way of knowing. The paper predicted that category of failure 3 years before it was found.
The fifth warning was the one Google cared about most.
Bender and Gebru argued that the deployment of these systems would centralize linguistic and cultural power in the hands of the small number of companies that could afford to train them. The internet would become a place where the dominant voice was a statistical average of dominant voices, presented as a neutral assistant. Languages underrepresented in the training data would degrade over time as more web content was generated by these systems and fed back into the next training run.
This is now happening in real time. A 2024 study found that 57% of new web content in English is AI-generated or AI-assisted. Researchers studying low-resource languages have documented active degradation in translation quality, because the synthetic content fed back into training is itself worse in those languages.
The paper Google fired her for predicted the model collapse problem before model collapse had a name.
The mechanism behind why this all happened is the part of her work that nobody quotes.
Gebru's argument was not that AI is dangerous in some abstract sci-fi sense. Her argument was that AI is dangerous in a very specific structural sense. The technology was being built by a small group of researchers who shared similar backgrounds, worked at similar companies, and were rewarded for shipping products faster than competitors. The incentive structure made it impossible for safety, ethics, and bias concerns to slow anything down. Anyone inside the system who raised those concerns was either ignored, sidelined, or removed.
She was making that argument from inside Google.
Then Google proved her right by removing her.
The team Google had built to make sure their AI was safe was dismantled in 90 days because they did the job they had been hired to do. Margaret Mitchell, the other co-lead of the Ethical AI team, was fired two months after Gebru for searching through her own emails for evidence of how Gebru had been treated.
Gebru did not stop. She founded DAIR, the Distributed AI Research Institute, in 2021. The mission is to do AI research outside the control of the companies that have a financial interest in not hearing the answers.
Every prediction in the Stochastic Parrots paper has now been validated by deployment. Hallucinations are an industry-wide problem the largest labs cannot solve. Bias amplification has been documented in hiring, healthcare, lending, and criminal justice. Environmental costs are larger than entire small countries. Training data audits remain impossible. Model collapse is an active research crisis at every major lab.
The question worth sitting with is the one almost no one in the industry will say out loud.
Every researcher with the technical credibility to call out these problems watched what happened to her in December 2020 and made a calculation about their own career. The number of people willing to speak publicly about safety and ethics issues inside the major AI labs collapsed after that firing and has not recovered.
The researcher Google fired for warning about exactly what is now happening was right.
The company that fired her is now the second-largest deployer of the technology she warned about.
And the people inside that company who agree with her are not allowed to say so.
Yeah Rainbow capitalism is not because companies care itās because they think they can make money selling Pride stuff but I like living in a world where the profit of pride stuff outweighs the cost of the backlash against pride stuff.
watched three girls who reblogged its new blog mutual aidpost (made literally 15 minutes ago) already disappear from its notifs. transfems are not included in their pride :/

your historical fiction smut isnāt very accurate to the period. in the plague era of the 21st century, womenās bodies were so frail from the ravages of disease that they had to wear restrictive compression garments to squeeze the blood back into their brains so they wouldnāt pass out whenever they stood up. smut should feature extended compression garment removal scenes as part of the foreplay or it just isnāt realistic. really takes me out of the setting.
Look, it's simple. If a person has to actively work to make money, they're not "the rich" and they're not the problem. A surgeon making $200k a year still stops making money if they stop showing up to do surgery, because they're still selling their labor. The radical discrepancies in how we value different skills are certainly a problem, but the guy who makes money when he doesn't even get out of bed is the one making money on the value of other people's labor.
a lot of people itt mistaking "liquid assets" for "income".
this chart is about how much money (checking/savings), or assets quickly convertible to money (i.e. stock investments that arent like locked in a 401k), a person has on hand. if you have zero or you're in debt (as in, the debt prevents you from saving) you are not on this chart. you are below Level 1
there are doctors living paycheck to paycheck, that puts them below level 1
it is funny when people who donāt draw tell people who do āi canāt even draw a circleā. a shape that is notoriously difficult for artists to get right on the first try. or āi canāt even draw a straight line,ā something many artists literally have to practice drawing over and over again as a warmup exercise
you may think misogyny is good because it is made up of miso, which is delicious, and gyny, which is woman. and girl miso sounds great. but š it is not girl miso
you may think homicide is good because it is made up of homo, which is gay, and cider, which is delicious. And gay cider sounds great. but š it is not gay cider

ENG: Back when Sojo was still a bit lucid... I wanted to draw them exploring with Mushroomo and finding a yummy mushroom. I'm really happy because the background colors came out looking so warm and cozyš
Back in the day I worked at a certain very famous and very high caste art museum in the US as a junior curator. Part of my job was to catalog the objects in the museum database. This includes details like provenance, measurements, and a visual description of what the object looked like.
Like I said, the museum was a pretty snotty institution. Itās got a LOT of objects itās way famous for possessing, but nobody knew about the absolutely massive collection of Moche erotic pottery it had because the curators were totally embarrassed by this stuff.
Some examples:
Pretty hot shit, right? They never, ever put any of this stuff on public view or published it in any catalogues but - we legit had like several hundred pieces of Moche ceramics in theĀ ādirty potsā category. Anyway, I was left alone to just do my job with regard to the database for several years, ok? And I figured, well, theseāre accessioned objects in the museumās collection - better get down to bidness.Ā
I catalogued every goddamn bestiality, necrophiliac, cocksucking, buttfucking, detached penis, and giant vulva drinking cup in that collection. Iād be like,Ā
A drinking vessel in form of a standing man wearing a tunic and cap. He holds an oversized erection in his hands and stares into the distance (note I did not say ālike heās hella-constipatedā). The vessel has a hole at both the tip of the penis as well as around the rim of the figureās head, thus forcing the drinker to drink only from the penis or risk spilling wine all over themselves from the top of the vessel. Red and orange slip covers the surface of the piece.
Pretty straightforward, right? Apparently the deep seated fear of these objects that the curators exhibited was meant to spread to me as well, but - no one ever gave me that memo, because I guess Midwesterners reproduce asexually. When the curators understood that I had catalogued all of these objects in addition to the other, non-sexy pieces in the collection, they were apparently livid, but knew they had no legs to stand on in terms of getting pissed at me for it.Ā
I visited the museumās online public access database a few years back and - every single description I wrote of these pieces has been totally neutered to say something like Male figural vase.Ā
Long story short? Just call a dildo a fucking dildo. Itās all gonna be ok, I swear.
Museums should have sections dedicated to artifacts like these with a warning that says āThereās a lot of private parts in here but weāre dedicated to displaying history so we wonāt censor these. Enter at your own riskā or something. Itās prudish to deliberately hide history because of some ding dongs.
when i went to the travelling Pompeii exhibit a few years ago it was nice to have a section just gently sectioned off with all the fun phalloi and graffiti. they had a warning on it, but they ALSO had a warning on the āhey this is where the simulated eruption happens, if you have trouble with flashing lights or loud noises let us know so we can show you the shortcutā bit, and I appreciated both.
Iām sure dozens of people have already made this post, but I havenāt seen one cross my dash yet, soā
Happy Pride to everyone on the AroAce spectrum who might feel deviant even amongst our peers cuz our relationship with romance, sex, andā/āor kink is not black and white :ā)
Happy Pride to arospec people who have some interest in dating, having significant others, or enjoying ritualsā/āactivities society deems as āromanticā
Happy Pride to aspec people who have some interest in sex, in kink, in feeling sexually desired, in enjoying the physical sensation or emotional intimacy of sexual pleasure
Happy Pride to aspec people with high libidos who feel out of place in the discourse
Happy Pride to folks who are demi-, grey-, flux-, quoi- or anywhere else in between an AroAce and allo identity
Happy Pride to folks who are aego- or litho- or stone or who otherwise feel attractionā/āarousal, or want to be the focus of someone elseās attractionā/āarousal, only under certain circumstances
Happy Pride to people who may not even be AroAce, but whose relationships with romance, sex, andā/āor kink are complicated enough for you to identify with AroAce experiences
Happy Pride to everyone with hangups or trauma revolving around romance, sex, andā/or kink, which makes engaging with such things feel like a complicated, Sisyphean mess
Happy Pride and I hope you all have a wonderful month!!
The thing about Project Hail Mary and the way it uses puppets not CGI and built entire sets and built the Petrova line out of wire and lightsā¦
And also, now I come to think of it, Iron Lung building a real set and actually using gallons of fake blood
Is that it feels real. It feels solid. Actors are absolutely brilliant at acting at nothing there but when Grace hugged Rocky, there was so much emotion because Ryan Gosling was hugging something real, when Simon gets thrown around the ship it feel real because heās trying not to hit the wall.
Green screen acting is a skill but emotion comes when the actors can touch and feel and react to something real. They can reach out. They can hug and they can bruise.
Both movies featured one actor in a set with no other actors for large periods of time and yet they absolutely worked because everything around them was real. And I think thatās a lesson Hollywood needs to learn.
When itās green screen we can tell! We instinctively know the action on screen isnāt āreal.ā
Thatās why all the Mad Max movies go so hard, because theyāre almost entirely practical effects and we can tell all those guys are actually boinging around on those cars!
this is the meanest thing anyoneās ever said to me in my entire life but I canāt even argue with this. what could I possibly say to defend myself in this instance. this was a one hit KO. this was a murder. this was a fucking slaughter and I have only myself to blame
