wow as much as i LOVED rdr2… that john and abigail epiologue was so unsatisfying to me.
this isn’t hate on either of them. they’re both extremely traumatized and deeply flawed characters and enjoy their unique additions to the rdr-verse
i just feel like john and abigail are the perfect example of people who love each other but are just so fundamentally incompatible with one another. their relationship is built on a cracked foundation and doesn’t really seem to help either of them.
i know abigail wanted jack to have a father but,,, i feel as if the two of them damaged jack way more with their contentious relationship than they would have if jack didn’t have a central father figure.
their love also seems so much more superficial than either of them think. john’s lost everyone from his original family and views as taking care of abigail and jack as something he can do that his deceased loved ones would be proud of him for. meanwhile abigail is desperate for stability and a normal life and expects things to change in the way that she thinks is right. neither of them really fulfil what the other is looking for in a relationship but suddenly when a ring is brought in i guess everything is fine???
rdr1 made me happy for them getting to be a family together, but rdr2 almost entirely scrubs those feelings out and replaces it with a bitter aftertaste. which is a real shame.
i still need to sort out more thoughts on them because their dynamic is really complex and emotionally strenuous because of their situation. but i do think if i write fic for rdr its going to be so hard for me to have john as anything but a beard, sperm donor, or just a co-parent (without a romantic relationship with abigail). especially in a modern au where abigail would have more agency and independence financially/socially than she does in their original time.
