One last look at Earth before we reach the Moon. This view of the Earth was captured on April 5, the fifth day of the Artemis II mission, from inside the Orion spacecraft. The four astronauts will reach their closest approach of the Moon tomorrow, April 6.
if i never hear another person talk about the prefrontal cortex it will be too soon
its incredible how for centuries we have been able to talk about the follies of youth and how people may make decisions when they are young that are informed by inexperience (in the subject matter, in relationships, in communication, in navigating emotions, etc.) and that needs to be taken into account. without making it a whole thing about how if you are under 25 you are basically brain damaged.
and its crazy how many people will be like yeah the rise of fascism is so scary, so many people are at risk of losing their autonomy, the government really wants to expand its control over us and how we act and think, we're probably gonna see a rise in eugenics..... btw did you know that teens and young adults are basically biologically incapable of critical thinking. i love being immune to propaganda :)
#and coming at this from a psych background not only is the study that lead to that “not developed until 25” thing very flawed#there's basically no way you can disentangle the nature and nurture here#because brain plasticity exists#your brain structure changes based on experience and what you practice and what you do#and that process and any kind of purely biological maturation are happening at the same time#and really all this point is saying is “younger people are less mature/developed than older people”#and like. yes? you would expect that?#and i think that's an argument both for letting kids and teens have as much agency and control over their own lives as they're capable of#*and* that younger adults should have a lot more support available to them#just everyone in general honestly#someone could be 93 and navigating some aspect of life for the first time and support should be available to them too
^ beautiful wonderful tags amen
I feel like I am going fucking insane.
I've tried looking up this study that everyone is so adamant that says the prefrontal cortex or the brain in general isn't mature until age 25, cause I've read the study actually just studied people until age 25 and then the study stopped.
I couldn't find the study itself, it might be paid access, hiding somewhere and everyone is just citing it without context, but here's an article that explain it.
Whether you are young or old, your brain is always changing.
TL;DR There is no study that ever said the brain is only fully developed at 25.
I want to go to this exact point and run around it saying “I’m in Sweden!” I’m in Finland!” “I’m in Norway!” until I get tired
i aspire to great things in life
According to Google Maps, that point is in the middle of a small lake.
So we’ll do it in January when it’s frozen.
actually that’s why they’ve helpfully dropped a big-ass cement block with a bridge surrounding it in the middle of the lake: for the express purpose of doing what OP aspires to do
there’s so much beauty in the world.
There’s also a point like this which connects Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands!
They even made a circle there which tells you in which country you are
And the tripoint of Slovakia-Austria-Hungary 👋😊
the tripoint of czechia, slovakia and poland is just A Rock In A Ditch lmao
but on a sunday april 05, 2026... there was no context needed.

deliverance
its bucky day so i wanted to make a doodle at least
Related: at a neuroscience conference I was at once there was a talk on how the "microslippages" against your fingertip when you lightly pinch something are generally enough for you to work out exactly how much force to grip it with to lift it without crushing it or dropping it.
[ID/A tweet by Cliff 🦖 [dinosaur emoji] Jerrison (@ pervocracy) saying "one of the most amazing things a human brain can do is when you shake an opaque bottle and get an idea of how full it is by how the weight shifts. there's got to be incredible math going on under the hood there" /End ID]
What about tosses? What about catching? THATS some serious math right there too
Theres a post somewhere about how the human brain is just constantly doing advanced calculus, even if we dont understand the math, we are still very good at consepsualizing it
LOVING PHYSICS HOURS!!!
So storytime from retail
So a common sale was Arizona Iced Teas in cans, 2 for a dollar. People would buy literal *cases* of their favorite flavor.
Once I was ringing up the cans for someone, who had like six. The cans were green.
I was a bit distracted ringing and putting cans in bags, engaging properly.
Grabbed a similarly sized and colored can of pringles. Brain did not register. Hand just went high up because Pringles weigh nothing compared to Arizona can
We all laughed but science tumblr what math error happened??? What was the error message in the brain?
That's because the brain is an optimization machine.
Let's say you pick up 30 Arizona cans a day. Every single time you pick one up, your brain quickly evaluates how much force is needed based on the weight. That's a lot of calculations tho, and nature always wants to conserve energy. So, the brain creates a procedure. Now instead of having to do that mental gymnastic every time, you just use the premade procedure. The action becomes muscle memory. It's just done automatically. It becomes a reflex.
And there's a reason we call it muscle memory. Because once the action becomes familiar enough, your brain is no longer needed. Your body knows what to do.
So when you touch the can of Pringles, two things happen. First, your body does what it's used to. It applies the amount of force you'd need to lift the Arizona can. Then, the tactile info reaches your brain and gets processed. It tries to correct the mistake you made, but it's too late.
Tldr: your brain is an overworked manager. It hates simple, repetitive tasks. That's the body's job. And when the body fucks up the brain can be a bit slow to react.
Also, our fine motor skills are off the charts. A huuuuge part of our brain is dedicated to handling tools. I can't think of another animal that relies so heavily on dexterity. Maybe spiders?
Humans are just spiders without enough hands. That's what I got from this. I hope that was the point.
Similar math error happens when you walk up stairs and don't pay attention and miss the end of the stairs, your body expects another step cause it's in stair-mode and then you fall over cause the ground is not where your body expects it.

Btw Artemis II astronaut Christina Koch is the youngest at 47yo with the most clocked time in space of the other crew, having set a record for the longest time in space in one mission for a female at 328 days. And is the first female on a lunar mission. As a biologist and engineer she dabbles in inventing tools, and has been awarded an honorary doctorate from her home state university.
Victor is 49yo and the first black man on a lunar mission. Overcoming systemic barriers, victor has obtained 3 masters degrees and 1 bachelor, along with flying over 40 aircraft in combat and peaceful missions.
Jeremy is 50yo and the first Canadian from the Canadian Space Agency on a lunar mission, and this is his first mission in space.
Reid is 50yo and was rejected the first time he applied to NASA, and is now Captain of the crew on his second mission in space. He has also served as chief of of the astronaut office for 2yrs. He and his two daughters have survived his wife (2020).
All four, about to make history on April 6th when they travel farther in space than any human has before, and see parts of the moon no other human has before.

It is never too late to start and you can always overcome barriers.
Shoot for the moon and you’ll land in the stars, or in their case, fly past it💫

Iran recruits 12-year-olds to ‘defend homeland’
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/03/30/iran-recruit-children-defend-the-homeland/?WT.mc_id=tmgoff_reddit_recruit-children-defend-the-homeland/&accesscontrol=facebookchannel_open
Iran winning the war so hard they are enlisting 12 year old child soldiers into roles that turn them into legal military targets!
Registration booths have been set up at mosques and major city squares across Tehran, with similar campaigns expected in other cities. Just days after the new recruitment campaign was launched, an 11-year-old boy was killed in a drone strike at a military checkpoint in Tehran. Alireza Jafari, who under normal circumstances would have been in the fifth grade at school (Year 6), was instead stationed at the checkpoint on Artesh Highway, helping his father “defend Iran”.
The Basij Teachers Organisation confirmed that Alireza was killed “while on duty”, performing security tasks in a war that has already claimed nearly 1,600 civilian lives.
Fucking hell could this regime get any more dystopian?
Iranian authorities are mobilizing children to fight in the war with the U.S. and Israel, Amnesty International says.
