Something something realizing Simon actually parallels the female/queer experience a lot because heās someone whoās stripped down to nothing and groomed to be built to be something he didnāt want to be because his society deemed that he should be that way and all of its surrounded in some kind of religious motif which is often where most people feel forced to conform to certain roles that they donāt want to conform to. Plus the way his tragic ending often mirrors how many female characters can be doomed by the narrative and are characters repeatedly known to get some kind of tragic fate that couldāve been avoided if they were listened to and respected by their peers. Add on top of the fact that his body is getting ripped to shreds in a blood ocean which are ALSO motifs heavily associated with womanhood (that being bodies of water and blood and the fear of your body getting violated in some way).
Is this anything chat??? Tell me if Iām onto something.
Small comforts.
viewing simonās story through the lens of transfemininity really recontextualizes/adds a new layer to a lot of the stuff we see in the movie. simon pretty explicitly has trauma related to manhood/masculine terms in relation to the eden stuff! people claiming that simon had a strong sense of brotherhood puzzles me because itās pretty clear he did not? he was made to act as the butcher and was then somewhat alienated for it. thereās also the angle of simon clearly not wanting to be sent off to join the brotherhood in that little auditory flashback hallucination.
also reading ābutcherā/āthe butcherā almost as a deadname really adds something to these scenes
This is such an interesting reading of this!!!!
Youāre right though, I think Simonās lack of brotherhood isnāt talked about enough, especially since itās such a major part of his flashback. His mother trying to assure him heāll love it there is one of only two interactions we have between Simon and his mother. The other is her handing him his knife, which could be read as him being pushed into roles traditionally assigned to men. Butchering, killing, being a soldier etc. Whilst this is post-quiet rapture (2373 ad or 378 e.i.c.), and gender roles have probably shifted somewhat, religion is normally a lot more focused on gender. We know that Eden is likely a patriarchal cult, from the multiple mentions of the father and the brotherhood.
Also, on a similar note, everyone who ultimately decides Simonās fate are women: His mother sends him to join the brotherhood, gives him the knife that leads to his title of the butcher. Ava is in control of whether or not he ever reaches the surface, and thereās also a line of hers saying āany other captain would have had you killedā. The eel uses the voices of two women (the eel itself is debatable in its gender) to lure Simon to where she wants him, and is what kills him in the end. Theyāre all separately deciding whether he gets to live and giving him the tools to do so.
On the other hand, Simon disagrees very strongly with all the men in Iron Lung. The father, David, his brothers, and even Jack, who he hardly interacts with other than the glare through the glass. The voice of the pinhole god is also male.
This could mean absolutely nothing in particular, and it might be me reading too far into it.
I am so sorry for how late I am getting to this, my day was way busier than I had planned!!
Thank you for sharing this though I love thinking about it!!!!
i need to get off tumblr iām at the aquarium admiring the fish and my brain goes āposts that make you want to get in the waterā what are you talking about. these are live fish in the room with you. what post.
posts that make you want to get in the water

Maybe this is a hot take but the gendered segregation of bloodsports is just as pants-on-head ridiculous as the gendered segregation of any other sport.
Like. This is a fucking game. Two boxers fighting one another in a ring are two gamers playing a game together. I cannot stress the extent to which boxing, MMA, et al are games created and pursued primarily for idle amusement. Just because the game is happening in a ring as opposed to on a pitch doesn't make it less of a game. We are Playing Toys when we glove up and clobber each other. It is For Fun. They're dangerous games, to be sure, but the danger is the chief source of amusement for the participants and the audience. The boxers wouldn't be boxing if they hated boxing.
"If we did co-ed boxing there would be Men Beating Up Women š”" Last time I checked a fight requires at least 2 active participants unless you're just beating up on yourself alone like Edward Norton in that movie. And as I said above, I presume nobody would pursue a career in boxing if they didn't like doing the boxing.
And moreover, maybe I'm just a hashtag 90s kid but I grew up being constantly innundated with messages about how girls are just as tough as boys and can do anything boys can do. "Fight like a girl" was an inescapably popular slogan. And it was all very nice and heartwarming and inspirational. So I take serious umbrage with the notion that competing in a co-ed fight league equates to "men beating up women" because, here in the real world, the women would lay out the men just as often as the reverse, and this implicit assumption that women are by majority soft, delicate, helpless creatures simply unfit for participation in physical culture has got to be one of the least feminist things I've ever heard.
Fighting (and weightlifting) would be some of the easiest sports to convert into a co-ed model cause they already have weight classes within the gender segregated versions to keep the sports fair. It really wouldn't be that hard to just combine the two halves into one thing. And this is also what prevents the thing that everyone is so scared of happening from happening. You wouldn't get a massive mountain of a man beating up a tiny woman in co-ed boxing, because they'd be in two different weight classes. If the massive mountain of a man were to fight a woman, he'd be fighting a massive mountain of a woman, and if a the tiny woman were to fight a man, she'd be fighting a tiny man. Thats how these sports already work. (This is also why the argument against letting trans people compete in the gendered categories matching their identities falls flat, people think if you let a trans woman compete in womens boxing that she'd dominate all her opponents, when in reality she'd be in the weight category that ensures her opponents give her fair fights. But that's a different conversation)
The real reason most sports, including fighting, are gender segregated, isn't because men would automatically dominate, quite the opposite actually, it's because the men would not win every single time and would lose to women more often than one would assume. And because our patriarchal society devalues anything women are good at, sports as a whole would be devalued. And that devaluing of womens work, talents, interests, and accomplishments is the real problem that needs to be addressed
can everyone get woke again. I miss her. I miss woke.
and by woke I mean aware of racism. the original meaning. don't do stupid bullshit here. woke = aware of anti-Black racism . ok
it is of course easier to performatively ban children from social media than to do things like "actually challenge and regulate the abusive tactics tech companies use to extract people's data and money via social media" but if we did the second thing we wouldn't have any excuse to force people to use digital ID :(
Transphobia is about to be signed into law in the UK. We can fight this.
I am begging the UK trans community and its allies to attend the Mass Lobby at Parliament on June 25th, 11am-4pm, organised by Trans Solidarity Alliance.
Last year we broke the record for an LGBT+ mass lobby of Parliament. Will you help us break it again? Join us on 25th June 2026 to demand be
The new EHRC Code of Practice pushes trans people out of toilets, hospital wards, and community spaces. It normalises gender policing based on appearance and stereotypes. It becomes statutory guidance in the UK by the end of June.
Trans people are now legally their assigned gender at birth and must join gendered spaces accordingly, but if they are perceived as their lived gender, they can also be ejected from those spaces. The guidance says: either break the law, or donāt pass too well.
A mass lobby is where you invite your MP to discuss your concerns with you in-person. Ask your MP to:
Demand full parliamentary scrutiny, debate, and use their free vote on the EHRC Code of Practice.
Support any motions rejecting the EHRC guidance. As of June 4th, Labour MP Nadia Whittome has submitted a prayer motion - Early Day Motion 240.
Write to Bridget Phillipson, the Minister for Women and Equalities about our concerns
Your MP does not have to be an ally, they do not have to respond to your email for you to show up and greencard them (details below the cut.) What matters is that as many people as possible show up.
I cannot stress this enough: Showing up in person matters. It is much more effective than petitions, emails, and letters.
It is a horrible, stressful time, and I am so sorry if you're trans and live in the UK. But I was at last year's mass lobby and the line for greencarding alone stretched around the back gates. It was a record breaking mass lobby and made us impossible to ignore. Let's do even better this time. Details under the cut:
Please call your representatives: VOTE NO on the FEDERAL BOOK BANNING BILLS HR 2616, HR 8705, and HR 7661!
Transcript below the cut.
Maia always makes these actions clear and accessible and I so appreciate eir work.
If you don't know who your Senators or Representatives are, you can use Ballotpedia's Who Represents Me tool! (Note: there's a field for you to input your email address on their page, but it's not necessary to get your results. They just need a mailing address to confirm who your reps are.)
Once you've got names, you can look up and save your Reps' phone numbers in your phone. I find this makes it easier when I'm wavering about feeling brave enough to place a call. Just pressing a button instead of going and looking up the phone number all over again makes it just a liiiiittle easier, and sometimes that makes the difference between calling and not calling!
YOU CAN DO IT.

there is so much to unpack in this clip
everyone's talking about the ibs/autism haha funny comparison thing while I'm still stuck on the concept that hamsters exist in the wild. like naturally
tf do you mean they're a wild creature. you find those ankle-biters at the pet store
Not a biologist, but the evolution of mammals is way more granular than you might expect. Humans are the sole surviving species of the genus Homo, which was a real party before the other ones went extinct. You're in for a fun time.
Domestic cats are believed to be domesticated not from tigers, but from the African wildcat:
Which evolved to be small just because it's sometimes more useful to be small.
And no, hamsters are not off-brand rats. They're part of the rodent order, which includes beavers, moles, capybaras, guinea pigs (yes, also wild) and lots of other fun things:
Shit. This dude knows an extreme amount about a niche subject. Crazy what you can accomplish when you have treatment resistant IBS
I want it on record that I shit mostly normal.
HUH?

fucking insane to be a person of colour in the uk right now
When my family first moved to the UK, we faced a similar risk to our wellbeing & safety as many are facing now, albeit for different reasons. in light of everything happening in Ireland & the tensions increasing in Glasgow, and the perennial England, hereās a list of actionable things to do for people who may be targeted & anti racist allies.
MY HOME IS ON THE LIST/LIKELY TO BE TARGETED, WHAT CAN I DO?
* it may bring you peace of mind to have a go-bag ready, just in case. A go-bag is a bag with everything in it that you need to get out a volatile situation quickly. Any bag that can be secured (buttoned or zipped) will do. In your go-bag, you should include;
- identifying documents; passport/driverās license/asylum card/ILR certificate/British Residency permit card
- Wallet and/or banking books
- A spare charger & cable and/or a power bank
- any shelf-stable medication (tablets, inhalers etc.) if you are on medication that needs to be refrigerated, leave it in the fridge until you have to leave
- Sanitary items; toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary pads & tampons, deodorant. If you have very young children with you, you may also want to take your nappy bag.
* If you have to leave, a go-bag is a convenient way to ensure you have everything of importance with you.
* If you are being supported by an asylum seekers or refugee charity, or are a member of a gurdwara/temple, mosque, synagogue or church, reach out to your religious leaders. They may be able to provide direct support, or put you in contact with organisations or other congregants who can help. If you are friendly with your neighbours, it may be worth contacting them too.
* IN THE EVENT THAT āPROTESTORSā DO COME TO YOUR HOUSE, CALL 999 IMMEDIATELY, AND FOLLOW ANY INSTRUCTIONS THEY GIVE YOU. MOVE AWAY FROM ANY WINDOWS. DO NOT OPEN YOUR DOOR UNLESS INSTRUCTED TO DO SO BY EMERGENCY SERVICES.
IāM AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT/CARE WORKER/NHS WORKER, WHAT SHOULD I DO?
* Contact your student welfare office/NHS Trust/agency for advice, support and referral to organisations that may be able to provide assistance
* if you live in or commute through an area that is likely to be targeted, contact your lecturers and your faculty to find out whether remote study is possible; if you work in care or as part of the NHS, find out if it is possible to change shifts.
* If it would provide peace of mind, prepare a go-bag as listed above
* Reach out to your the uni society or studentās organisation for international students or students of specific ethnic origin; they may be able to provide you with direction to resources and peer support. If your university has a Marxist or Socialist society, reach out to them for mutual aid with a travel buddy etc., for getting to and from your place of study/work
* If you are a member of a gurdwara/temple, mosque, synagogue or church, reach out to your religious leaders. They may be able to provide direct support, or put you in contact with organisations or other congregants who can help.
* If you are friendly with your neighbours, it may be worth contacting them too for assistance with travel to & from work.
* Report any racism or racialised violence you are subjected to. NHS staff have a right to refuse to treat patients who harass, abuse, threaten or insult them; if a patient is racist to you, where possible, ask another member of staff to take over their care.
PERSONAL SAFETY:
* do not leave your home unless strictly necessary. If it is necessary to leave, donāt do it alone.
* use NextDoor, WhatsApp, social media and word of mouth to avoid commuting through āprotestorā road blocks, areas of active conflict etc.,
* When travelling, use Share My Location or Life360, and keep at least two people aware of your expected time of arrival at your destination with instructions to contact the police if you do not let them know youāve made it safely
* do not directly confront any individuals involved, or allow them to bait you into becoming confrontational
* only record if it is safe. Do not record individuals directly/from up close
* Do not directly intervene. If you see violence occurring, contact emergency services and if safe to do so, record whatās happening.
ALLYSHIP & HOW TO HELP:
* if you have neighbours, friends, coworkers or acquaintances form targeted communities, reach out to them. Ask them what you can do to help them feel safe.
* If you live in an area likely to be targeted, reach out to any vulnerable people you know. If safe and possible, offer to let them shelter with you in the event they need to leave home
* If you see any incitement to violence online screenshot it; it may prove useful in the event of individual āprotestersā being prosecuted
* If you see any specific areas being discussed as targets, alert anyone you know at risk in the area
* Reach out to local refugee & asylum seekersā organisations, to organisations supporting foreign national care & healthcare workers, and to churches, mosques, gurdwaras; they may be looking for short term assistance in helping to provide for vulnerable members of their community
CHARITABLE ORGANISATIONS FOR ASSISTANCE & TO SUPPORT:
* NASC Ireland; refugee & asylum seeker charity
* Doras.org; migrant, stateless persons, refugee and asylum seeker rights advocates
* Jesuit Refugee Service; religious refugee & asylum seekers charity
* Irish Refugee Council; supporting stateless displaced persons & refugees in NI & ROI
* International Studentās House (IE & UK WIDE): provides hardship funding and help to international students
* PathFinder (UK WIDE); supports international students
* Care International (GLOBAL); global carerās charity
* Choose Love (IE & UK WIDE); charitable organisation supporting refugees and asylum seekers
* Praxis UK (UK WIDE); supporting refugees & asylum seekers
* The Runnymede Trust (IE & UK WIDE); antiracism education charity
* Migrantās Rights Network (IE & UK WIDE); advocacy and support for migrants and refugees
* ShareTheMeal (GLOBAL); providing meals for refugees and those fleeing conflict globally
* Amnesty (IRELAND, UK & WORLDWIDE); human rights NGO
* UNHCR & UN Refugee Council (GLOBAL); UN refugee bodies supporting those seeking asylum, fleeing conflict & internally/internationally displaced worldwide

support a disabled trans woman of color for pride month š³ļøāā§ļøš³ļøāā§ļøš³ļøāā§ļø
this pride month it would be awesome if people could commission my wife so that we can work on moving out from her transphobic family. payment will go through my paypal (she isn't comfortable putting her deadname on the internet) and more details on how to commission + samples of her music can be found on her carrd. please share, thank you!
meddlingmage Music Commissions
if you would like to throw us a couple of bucks without commissioning to add to our moving out fund, i have linked my cashapp here and my venmo here. thanks again :)
someone sent us $40 but other than that no commission requests since i posted this, my wife would really like to work while sheās still physically able to so even if youāre not a content creator at all and just want to buy a 1 minute song for $10 or something please feel free to. the hypermobility clinic has found evidence that her organs are shifting from heds, and she wonāt be able to get treatment for her pars defect/spinal injury, mcas, and gerd for a while. the stress of living with transphobic family members who donāt respect her needs and regularly bring in stuff that triggers her mcas is hindering her recovery, and we need to move out asap.
my friend kamari and i make up more than a quarter of the reblogs on this post and heās also struggling to raise money for his friend saige, a black trans woman who needs funds for emergency housing, food, and transportation. please show up for trans women of color. i know this is the white website but itād be really nice if people could show my wife and saige some support.
Hey everyone. There's a new youtube feature that rolled out just yesterday that's raising some privacy concerns.
People in the U.S., U.K., Brazil, and Singapore can now share videos and chat with friends directly within the YouTube app. The update bring
This post talks about a new DM feature in youtube. What it fails to mention is that as part of this new feature is that when you send someone a link to a video, and they open it in the youtube app, they will see who sent them the link. Specifically, your channel name.
If your google account name is your real name, so is your channel name by default.
This means the new default behavior is that everyone you send a youtube link to will see your full name if they open it in the mobile app.
To turn this off:
Go to your youtube app settings
Go to Privacy
Turn off "Channel visibility for shared links"
Trimming the source id (the stuff after the '?' in links) will also prevent this from happening.
