^William of Orange (later William III of England) by Adriaen Hanneman, 1654 (age 4). Despite his dress (he has not yet been breeched), his gender is indicated by such elements as his masculine hat, sash, relatively unadorned gown, and the playful dog.

^ William III by Cornelis Janssens van Ceulen, ca. 1657 (age 7). His hat, collar, and sash are in a masculine style, and the buttons down the front of the gown mimic adult male doublet or vest of the era. This is the most masculine of the gowns in this post, probably because he is 7 here and would soon be breeched.

^William III and his aunt Princess Maria of Orange by Gerrit van Honthorst, 1653 (age 3). Note that he is in "leading strings" - bands of cloth attached to the shoulders of his gown, so that an adult can help to hold him up as he learns to walk. He is in masculine red (as opposed to Maria's feminine blue), with a relatively unadorned gown. He is also wearing an apron, just like he is in the first image.
