I'm not religious but I'm a very emotional scientist and I've been thinking about this a LOT lately. I love the earth enough to be its steward. and I have the necessary tools for the task. a complex brain. dexterous hands. legs made to walk long and far. millions and millions of years of Chance and Opportunity shaped me into something that can give back to the planet that has been a life-sustaining home for every person who ever lived. it's enough to make me teary eyed sometimes

Side note but I think more people should read the book Bible and Sword by Barbara Tuchman, especially in the English-speaking world where I think people downplay or simply fail to understand how weird anglophone culture has been about Israel and Palestine for literally centuries. Tuchman's far from comprehensive and I think not even particularly unsympathetic to Israel, but I think the earlier time and voice in which she's writing actually underscores the degree of obsession present in these national constructions, and the fact that she is an amateur and not a historian makes her book a particularly approachable introduction to the topic.
