How do they rise up...
Post your lilacs if you gottem, everybody!
For all the many flaws of the tagging system on this hellsite, it is so perfect for Sending Home. A man's not dead while his name is still spoken, and what are the tags but the Overhead of tumblr? They aren't the posts themselves, but they are metacommentary on posts, notes to friends, info to be passed on. The message has been logged and is continuing to be sent on. GNU

And now, Vimes thought, it ends.
The new sergeant-at-arms picked up his badge with care and saluted yet again. ‘Oath, sir,’ he said.
‘Oh, er, that thing? Er, I believe I’ve got it written down somewh—’
Vimes took a deep breath. This probably wasn’t a good idea, but he was flying now.
Night Watch by Terry Pratchett, pp. 115-116.
It is very important to note the total lack of swearing to obey the monarch (or any other ruler).
The Watch swears to uphold the law, serve the public trust, and defend the subjects of the kingdom, without fear, favour (bias) or thought of personal safety, to protect the innocent and pursue evildoers, to the point of dying in the course of duty.
It is, as Vimes observes privately later, a very sneaky and terrifyingly free to interpret oath.
...
I notice something different on every reread but the thing that stood out to me first this time around was that Wilikins clearly remembered the significance of the day and prepared for it in advance but he didn't remind Vimes, he waited until he remembered in his own time.

Here is my contribution to the Glorious 25th of May.
How do they rise up?
An oldie, but a favourite.
Happy Glorious 25th of May.
"Every year he forgot. Well, no. He never forgot. He just put the memories away, like old silverware that you didn't want to tarnish. And every year they came back, sharp and sparkling, and stabbed him in the heart."

Rattle your drawers for the goddess Anoia!
Here’s a quote that always reminds me Crowley
“The god, almost alone among gods, thought questions were a good thing. He was in fact committed to people questioning assumptions, throwing aside old superstitions, breaking the shackles of irrational prejudice and, in short exercising the brains their god had given them, except of course they hadn’t been given them by any god, lord knows, so what they really ought to do was exercise those brains developed over millennia in response to the external stimuli and the need to control those hands with their opposable thumbs, another damn good idea that he was very proud of. Or would have been, of course, if he existed.
However, there were limits. Freethinkers were fine people, but they shouldn’t go around thinking just anything.”

you're so right! thank you for the ask!
