The original Jim's Original on Maxwell Street in Chicago. The area was an open air market, selling everything from tube socks to antiques to produce to stereos of dubious origins. Jim's was (and still is, at a new building nearby) open 24 hours, feeding anyone who could scrape up a couple bucks for a polish and fries.
This location opened in 1939 and was there until 2001 when UIC and the City pushed the Maxwell Street Market out of its original location and redeveloped the area.
This week Jim's Original announced that it's being pushed out by UIC again, this time to a spot in Pilsen. The university is its landlord at 1250 S. Union Ave., and they've been given until June 30 to vacate the property in advance of a new, as yet unannounced development.
The new spot at 551 W. 18th St. may be able to be 24 hours again; UIC forced Jim's to close at 1am to "cut down on crime" in the area.

In a bull market, one must avoid the error of the preening duck that quacks boastfully after a torrential rainstorm, thinking that its paddling skills have caused it to rise in the world. A right-thinking duck would instead compare its position after the downpour to that of the other ducks on the pond.

We have a pair of rocks glasses with the Dry Sack logo on them, part of a liquor store gift pack purchased some 25 years ago. I no longer remember how Dry Sack tastes... decent enough, I imagine. It's a blend of sherries, so a little sweet.
Boy, the copy in this ad is terrible. "The light drink with the reputation equal to your usual drink"? Yeesh. And "Imported from Spain" is the best they could do for a slogan?

From above, the Sicilian city of Centuripe looks like a person.
A man of the city.
What did he do to piss off Superman?
The fact that Mirriam-Webster, publisher of one of the key tools of language prescriptivists, is itself descriptivist pleases me to no end.

Ancient Greek Coins With Octopuses š
Pieces of eight!
1930 French set of silver plated animal knife-rests by Sandoz for Gallia in the original case. From Art Nouveau & Art Deco, FB.
I like that the cat at bottom-right looks irritated that you're resting your knife on it.

This concept car was in a book I had as a kid. Looking at it now it's obvious how impractical it would be ā having to slide over to the center seat when getting in to drive, the ...computer system display?... at the feet of one of your passengers, basically where their feet would go -- but it sure looked cool!
No, this was not a Hoth playset released by Kenner, it was actually a ādo it yourselfā Rebel Base detailed in Womanās Day magazine in 1980. Their rendition of Hoth was made almost entirely of sheets of plastic foam, which were carefully cut, glued together and then mounted onto a base of corrugated cardboard. Ā The rear portions of the construction included mock computer banks similar to those seen in some portions of The Empire Strikes Back, as well as a docking bay area complete with shoelaces to simulate maintenance hoses. Ā Other portions were given over to simulated ice chambers and tunnels, which could serve as either Echo Base corridors or the Wampaās lair. Ā Womanās Day even included a ceiling bracket in one area to allow for action figures to be suspended from their feet as Luke was in the film. Ā Unfortunately, Kenner didnāt release a Wampa toy until 1982, so I guess you had to use your imagination while utilizing this feature.Ā

One of my favorite things to as a kid was to use the molded styrofoam packing inserts from various toys as "forts" for my Star Wars and GI Joe figures. They tended to be roughly two stories tall (compared to the figures) with interesting shapes inside of a roughly square or rectangular floorplan, with at least one wall that was thin enough to cut a door or window into, or break a section off to emulate ruins. Perfect for Hoth, but also easy to draw or color on to suit wherever the action was taking place.
Hours of fun, for free!
Holy crap, I just got an inactivity shutdown notice from Google for paranormalinsider[at]gmail.com. That was an address I had for my work on Paranormal Insider, a blog I edited as part of the marketing for A&Eās āParanormal Stateā TV show. The blog ran from 2007 to 2008, and I was able to hire @bluishorange as one of the writers! We wrote about all sorts of paranormal activity, not just ghosts ā everything from Bigfoot to aliens. I interviewed the leader of the Penn State Paranormal Society, as well as a couple people who had them come look for ghosts in their homes.
Itās long gone from the internet, and I havenāt logged into the account since the blog ended. Really on the ball, Google!

2025 stats:
½ dubai chocolate ingested ā real "Dubai chocolate," the original viral bar, a gift from a friend who purchased it in the Dubai airport while waiting for a connecting flight home from vacation. Shared the rest with friends. It was fine; still don't quite understand what the mania is about, other than pistachio and chocolate being somewhat novel.
3 labubus bought ā all for my nieces, who are young teenagers and therefore the appropriate age for a viral fad. I don't have to understand it to be supportive of my nieces wanting to have something that makes them look cool for awhile.
0 episodes of stranger things watched ā I was too busy with work to watch when the original series came out, and never bothered to catch up. There are too many TV series, movies, comics and books to try and keep up with them all, so I'm selective.
I used to sneer at mainstream trends and fads. As a Gen-X teenager in the '90s, it was practically my religion. But as I've gotten older, I have mellowed in my antipathy. Don't get me wrong, I can still be dismissive of trendy stuff, but I've for the most part gotten over feeling superior about it. I'm into plenty of things that most people would find either super nerdy, or basic, or otherwise worthy of derision. Glass houses and all that. Yucking other people's yum just mostly doesn't do anything for me anymore.
Sometimes wild attraction shit happens when you learn to separate masc/fem from man/woman. Iāve known queer women find the femininity in a man attractive. Iāve known gay men get so hot and bothered by the masculinity of a woman.
There was once a guy who was not really my type but then he did drag and was suddenly wildly attractive to me. And since Iām bisexual it doesnāt give me a crisis when someone is suddenly hot to me in an unconventional way. I used to think this was particularly a bi experience.
Then Iāve met plenty of gay men and lesbians who are also chill about that sort of thing. Sometimes life is like that āoops made out with a twink in Brighton who turned out to be a lesbian who thought I was a lesbianā and sometimes itās like āhey, Iām not normally into men but this guy has got something hot going on.ā
So I could be a straight woman, and still find this hot?
