"craving a food means your body needs something that food can offer" now what the fuck does my body need with an ice cream
it makes your brain happy! your body could use some joy too
no everyone shut up and listen. truths were said
in all seriousness, if you're craving ice cream, it's likely that your body needs fat and carbs. If ice cream isn't an option for whatever reason, you can try to feed yourself something else with a significant amount of fat and/or carbs. You may also be dehydrated if you're craving sweets.
That said, sometimes your body and brain do genuinely just need a pick me up.
The more frequently you practice intuitive eating like this, the better you'll get at figuring out what it is that your body is asking for.
Also, a great trick is to take a look at what you're craving, note the nutritional contents (fat, carbs, protein, plant matter/fiber) and try and figure out what else sounds tasty for your particular craving. This can give you more data points to go off of. For instance, if you're craving ice cream, but a sweet roll sounds just as good, it's probably carbs your body is asking you for. That said, if you're craving ice cream and a sweet roll doesn't sound good at all BUT a bagel with strawberry cream cheese or avocado toast DOES sound good, you know it's fat you're needing.
If all you're craving is ice cream and nothing else sounds worth the effort, you may just need a low effort mood boost, which is also totally valid! This can also help you even if you can't have ice cream, because now that you know what your body actually wants, you know there are more ways to fulfill that order than the way it asked you to!
also, uh.. Migraines. I started getting a migraine and all of a sudden I just NEEDED Ice cream. I had some in the freezer so put some in a cup, went off, and it was instantly fixed. Turned out the cold in ice cream can alter the blood flow via the veins in the top of the mouth and that somehow can fix migraines? Ice water will do the same. But if you are getting a migraine, try getting ice cold water or ice cream to the roof of your mouth as a first step fix.
I have genuinely never regretted listening to my body when I had a genuine craving.
A couple of months ago, when we were trying to get my insulin/blood sugar all set and I was struggling real hard, I also had a HUGE craving for shellfish. I generally don't eat shellfish on account of, you know, Jewish, but when all I could think about for DAYS was eating COLD SHRAMP RIGHT NOWWWWW, I went and got some.
I felt better right away, and my wife pointed out that we usually use sea salt in our food, which usually doesn't have iodine in it. She got us some sea salt with iodine, and I stopped dreaming of shrimp, and my blood sugar/insulin situation calmed down, bc iodine helps glucose processing.
Also like... even though it was extremely treyf, it made me feel good to listen to my body and give it what it asked for, even if it was a "forbidden/bad food" the way that most Americans talk about ice cream. Sometimes just listening to yourself is what you need as much as anything.
It makes you more confident in your body, and that's rad.
Also, I use that ice cream trick for migraines all the time.
The Talmud actually directly addresses the topic of severe cravings and for the record, eating treyf in your situation was absolutely following halacha:
MISHNA: With regard to a pregnant woman who smelled food and was overcome by a craving to eat it, one feeds her until she recovers, as failure to do so could lead to a life-threatening situation. If a person is ill and requires food due to potential danger, one feeds him according to the advice of medical experts who determine that he indeed requires food. And if there are no experts there, one feeds him according to his own instructions, until he says that he has eaten enough and needs no more. (Yoma 82a)
That does actually make me feel a lot better, thank you!
(Seriously, fixing my iodine levels REALLY helped my body regulate sugar.)
Iodine levels are a whole thing thatβs been backgrounded in a lot of countries because we get it through iodized salt, but if we stop getting our required iodine it can really fuck us up.

Yes :3
straight white people making a romance movie: haha what if it was illegal to have sex? wait what's lawrence v texas. wait what's mclaughlin v florida. wait what's loving v virginia
As preposterous and stupid as this fucking movie's premise sounded (for a light-hearted rom-com, and not The Handmaid's Tale) I didn't want to think about it too much until the movie actually came out, and then I could see if it was somehow more intelligent and subversive than the trailer let on, but guess what, it's even worse!
If this is what it takes to get a rom-com greenlit these days, maybe we should just let them die.
Sex workers are thrown under the bus, shown only as thieves who fleece men in the woods at night, while queer sexuality is relegated to a few scenes with Allieβs roommate (a woefully underused Quintessa Swindell) and a handful of pans past blurry same-sex extras making out in the background. βThis night is for the straights,β Swindellβs character says to Allie, before saying that queer people have worked around straight laws for centuries.Β This is supposed to be a nod to queer resilience, but largely comes off as straightwashing the history of anti-LGBTQ legislation in this country that led towards raids of queer clubs and incarceration of queer people in the not-too-distant past (let alone the current barrage of anti-Trans and LGBTQ legislation currently in the works and on the books). Itβs also ignorant of the long and fraught fight for the normalization of age-of-consent laws, which, by the way, did not happen in all states in this very country until 2003. Yes, thatβs not even thirty years ago.Β By the end, our intrepid protagonists have not had sex with anyone, because this is a film about Romance with a Capital R (and I guess sex is not part of romance!) and for that very same reason they ultimately embrace the fascist state of things. They arenβt the only ones who refuse to fight back. No one in this cursed film is protesting this mandate beyond βrepealβ signs in various windows and some creative graffiti (...) (...) If we are supposed to believe that the film is making some subversive statement about the state of sex and bodily autonomy in this country, it cannot end with its leads embracing their chains. Thatβs just warmed-over conservatism running around in sheepβs clothing.
yeah i wrote this post having only seen the trailer, but jesus christ. was this movie a psyop LMAO??
also, for the unaware: mclaughlin v. florida was a 1964 supreme court case that struck down a florida anti-miscegenation law that criminalized cohabitation (and thus, as implied, sex) between white people and people of color of opposite genders. anti-miscegenation laws made marriage and sexual relationships between white people and people of color, most often specifically black people, a FELONY in several states in the united states up until the 1950s and 1960s. though it was already struck down by the supreme court, the state of alabama didn't repeal their law until 2000! there were THREE ATTEMPTS at codifying anti-miscegenation into the us constitution!
like yes, the issue here is partially straight white people's ignorance on the united states's history of homophobic policy, but it's also really important to recognize that arguably the majority of the issue here is straight white people's ignorance of the united states's history of codifying eugenics and antiblack racism.
the premise could have been interesting as a serious dystopian story, especially taking that history into account, but it wasn't written that way at all. this movie should never have been a fucking romcom making light of the violence the united states (and many other countries) has enacted on any kinds of sexual relationships it deems undesirable.
can yβall maybe reblog this version i feel like people are forgetting about the racism and just focusing on the homophobia
Itβs so important to practice, practice, practice
everyone socially awkward is autistic. everyone selfish is narcissistic. everyone overwhelmed is overstimulated. every hobby is a hyperfixation. everyone who is sad has depression. every homebody is an agoraphobe. if theres something different about you, we will give it a name and make a medication for it. dont worry

even if your nervous system is shot to hell and you're a reactive dog on a chain all the time you can spend several years retraining your nervous system (with the help of friends to practice Disagreeing With) and one day you can reach a point where getting Disagreed With doesn't cause your whole entire bodybrain situation to implode messily. it's super great. I recommend it
Like with real dog training, rewards >>>> punishments, and you learn best when you are well cared for
this is why I think it is so crucial to be able to Practice Disagreeing about relatively trivial subjects with safe and trusted friends and loved ones where you both know that's what you're doing and you are both actively and continually affirming that you love each other the whole time it's like training wheels. I truly cannot recommend finding friends to Practice Disagreeing with enough.

The history of socialist movements in Amerikkka is a history of mass mobalizations around genuinely progressive demands being divided and smothered by the imperialist bourgeoisie, using the spoils of empire to buy off enough proletarians that they can unleash violence on the rest.* Crucially, this bribery has never actually produced stable prosperity for even the white working class: the economic expansion of the 1920s led to the great depression; the recovery of the New Deal and the WWII economy led to the financial crisis of the 1970s; the neo-liberal turn of the 1980s led to our present economic mire. Historically, these crises have led to outbursts of revolutionary activity, however the 1980s counterrevolution so thoroughly dismembered our left, that our new generation of activists has a long way to go.
What we are currently seeing is the slow but steady reemergence of socialist politics here, at the same time that the system of wealth production/extraction with which the bourgeoisie bribed past generations is rapidly going up in smoke. That the ruling class will soon be unable to govern in their old style is all but certainβhow long it takes for the socialisits here to actually build a movement capable of seizing state power is the main question
*Historically, this dynamic of the dollar for some, the sword for others has been generally drawn across racial/national lines. If we are to ever overcome this, it's important to understand both the cultural experience of this phenomenon, but also the abstract economic character which reveals the mechanism and motive.
