Had a ward member look at me with utter disbelief when she saw me wear a necklace with a small silver cross on it.
Tumblrstake, what do we think about crosses?
I structured this to differentiate between people from areas where the church is very concentrated to everywhere else. If you're not from Utah or Idaho but still an area elsewhere in the US that is similarly concentrated, consider voting under the bracket for Utah/Idaho.
I chose to omit the option to not wear cross jewellery but still have them in church, I assume this won't be picked by people. If this is you however, please consider reblogging with your take.
The jewellery part may is less about your personal preference to wear jewellery, and moreso about whether you would feel okay spiritually to wear one, or if others wearing it would make you uncomfortable. "Necklaces or crosses look bad on me" doesn't count, so please still vote that you WOULD wear them.
This survey is about your own personal view, not "I respect whatever other people wanna do, so doesn't matter to me" but just what you would or would not do. So...
Crosses (your own view)
Utah/Idaho: Wearing OKAY, in church OKAY
Utah/Idaho: Wearing OKAY, in church NOT OKAY
Utah/Idaho: Wearing NOT OKAY, in church NOT OKAY
non-Utah/Idaho: Wearing OKAY, in church OKAY
non-Utah/Idaho: Wearing OKAY, in church NOT OKAY
non-Utah/Idaho: Wearing NOT OKAY, in church NOT OKAY
I'd love to hear your opinions more elaborately and get talking about the topic! Please comment or reblogs with an elaboration on why you think this way (like prayer, upbringing, personal conviction, intellectual reasons, anything!) Reasons such as "just feels right" are obviously also okay!
On the same notion, please also answer the following: How would people around you have reacted to someone within the church wearing a cross? Were they against it and believed it should not be done?
Your surroundings on crosses
Raised in church (Utah Idaho), people believed this and still do
Raised in church (Utah/Idaho), people believed this but don't anymore
Raised in church (Utah/Idaho), people never believed this
Raised in church (non-Utah/Idaho), people believed this and still do
Raised in church (non-Utah/Idaho) people believed this but don't anymore
Raised in church (non-Utah/Idaho), people never believed this
I wasn't raised in the church
Just give a general answer. That one odd uncle may not be "my surroundings had this belief", but if your parents believed this, you may want to vote that people around you believed crosses should not be worn.
Again I would be delighted in more elaborate answers! Let's talk about the results and my findings in a week :D
So I grew up in Provo, and crosses were never treated as a spiritually wrong thing, just not a thing that we did. I tend to think of it as a Catholic thing.
