people won't like me saying this but we actually do need to normalize talking about and depicting rape and we need to normalize talking about it like we would any other violence. we need to stop treating it like this taboo word that needs to be censored, this secret subject that can't be alluded to in media. we need to be able to talk about rape and incest the way we talk about murder, or hell, the way people talk about cannibalism on this site.
It's already normalized and people don't take it seriously are you people delusional or do you just never see any sort of normal media.
What society are you living in where people can discuss rape without the taboo and stigma surrounding it overshadowing the conversation. Because I'm living in the society where people dumb the word down to "grape" to avoid censorship, where any implication of it in media that isn't shoved in your face is totally dismissed and anything less subtle is called gratuitous and also not examined. where people say murder is "better" than rape. where rape and sexual assault are treated as this special sort of violence that's almost mythologized, a culture of denial where anything to do with sexual violence is both sensationalized and swept under the rug.
hi this drives me crazy
canon is what happens in the text. e.g. merlin tries to poison morgana
a headcanon is a fact that you have personally made up as an elaboration of canon. it is your invention. e.g. i think morgana and gwen had a teenage lesbian situationship before the events of canon. or, i think modern morgana would love evanesence.
an interpretation is how one reads the existing text. it is not an invented fact nor is it a headcanon, it is a reading. e.g. i think merlin tries to poison morgana out of misplaced self-hatred. or, i think that one line was delivered with suppressed malice and shows a nuanced relationship.
fanon is the general fandom’s accepted headcanons and interpretations that elaborate or recontextualize canon. e.g. merlin is a badass waif and morgana is a bitch.
these are all different words with different meanings.
Fandom Problem #15,988:
"[inaccurate information] is literally canon! it's confirmed when this character said this!"
and it's either a character who's established to lie a lot, or there's reason to believe the character could be misinformed, or in a situation where there's a very obvious reason why a character may be motivated to conceal the truth.
“they never explicitly looked at the camera and said ‘i am experiencing immense grief’ so how was i supposed to know??” i don’t know what to tell you, man. if a story doesn’t spoon-feed you the character's internal emotional state like a jar of mashed peas, you guys just willingly starve. subtext is not a myth, i promise it won't bite you.
even when they say it people act like it was never said. there is an entire episode of steven universe future that literally says "steven, you have ptsd" and yet to this day there are people acting like he's a whole different character in the spinoff series

Fandom Problem #15,938:
At the end of the day, people need to realize that Fandom and the Fanwork space in particular is a POTLUCK. Not a restaurant, and certainly not your personal chef. Don't like what's on offer? Cook your own dish and bring it, then. Whining that the food here is not to your liking just makes you look like an entitled ass.
Honestly, my biggest frustrations with the redemption arc discourse is, on top of people saying we need more pure evil villains (we don't), is all the people going "okaaaaayy you CAN redeem the character, but there NEEDS to be accountability!!! No one is obligated to forgive you!!! They have to struggle forever with their worst impulses!!! They need more than a 'slap on the wrist'!!! They need to keep suffering and know everyone hates them forever!!!"
Like, gee, okay. Glad to see grudge-holding is such a key part of your personality that a fictional story demonstrating the lack of it is the most threatening thing to your sense of self.
Honestly a lot of the backlash to redemption arcs seems to boil down to people searching for validation to keep being angry and hateful forever/keep dehumanizing people they don't like...
I encountered a Reddit convo that is relevant to this ask:
[Source]
I wouldn't call it a "fetish" — revenge power fantasy works just fine — but yeah, it is thinly veiled as a purity testing thing.
Jax isn't an evil villain, nor did she get a redemption arc due to her self-sabotaging tendencies. If she had redeemed herself, certain people would be going after Gooseworx EVEN HARDER than they are now.
Characters who aren't like Zuko getting redeemed seems to bring out the worst in fandoms.
This person is so right:
[Spoilers for... The whole series? | Why do so many people say that Jax received "no consequences" for her actions?]
Undergoing Death of Personality when she didn't want to go is an ultimate example of someone facing the consequences of their actions, I'd say.
"Jax "got away away scott free" my foot.
The thing is that sex scenes actually are incredible ways to explore character. People are at their most vulnerable during sex! The way they have sex says a lot of very interesting things about their desires, obviously, but also their psychology, their vulnerabilities, their hopes and fears, etc. It is completely insane to me to think that sex scenes have no value other than to sexually excite the audience. And even if their only value is to sexual excite the audience - SO WHAT?? A movie is supposed to excite and entertain you! Grow up!!!
the thing about Tangled is that this is a story geared towards little girls (even if it's "fun for the whole family," it's a disney princess movie, it's geared towards little girls), and it says, "here is a girl who is naive and doesn't know anything about the 'Real World' or how to navigate it safely and correctly. now pay close attention: the good guys are the ones who help her grow and explore new things while still respecting her own perspective and feelings, not making her feel stupid. the bad guys are the ones who tell her that she is too weak/immature/naive to do the things she wants to do, because she is fragile and needs protecting." and I watched this when I was nine years old and it resonated deep in a part of me that I couldn't articulate with words yet.
like, I was nine years old. other notable memories from being nine years old include adults making jokes about how easily squished fairies could be when I tried to explain my love of tiny fairies living tiny lives, and adults talking over my head about how I was "still so innocent" when I asked a question about what something was. a movie saying "hey even if you're naive and innocent you're still important and you have ideas that are worth something and people who treat you otherwise are holding you back" was such an important thing. idk
I aced my anatomy class and it only enhances the gay sex i write. I will ignore it at will when convenient and i will also drop what region of vertebre he's fondling.
Put that 10 inch cock in that man, girl
Ignore all reason, for it is whimsy

Have you ever noticed how straight woman tend to romanticize yaoi, and completely ignore yuri? Yuri is literally so underrepresented in fandoms and as a lesbian it kills me.
Also the obsession straight woman have with gay men is lowkey weird, reminds me of straight men wanting to 'turn lesbiand straight.'
then YOU write more yuri. I never say “yuri is bad”. all I say is that I enjoy yaoi, and therefore I read, write and talk about yaoi on my own blog.
if you like yuri, then YOU read, write and talk about yuri. nobody is stopping you.
I am a cis woman, and I am obsessed with my mlm ship — because that’s my passion and my source of comfort. I write because I love my mlm ship, and because these fictional men make me happy (and no, I don’t want them straight, I want them gay and in love with each other). I am not going to apologize for doing whatever makes ME happy for myself and my own enjoyment. I am not here for a stranger’s approval. sorry if you find it weird I guess? I literally don’t know who you are, and a stranger’s opinion is not something I care about. especially when they come into MY house and start telling me what I should or should not do and enjoy.
I’ll continue reading, writing, enjoying and talking about yoai. and you can’t stop me.
again, fanfiction is not an act of activism. do whatever makes you happy, whatever turns you on, instead of trying to shame others for enjoying the thing they enjoy instead of the thing you enjoy.
The submission here is such a dishonest take.
Writing two men being attracted to each other is NOT the same as "wanting to turn lesbians straight". An equivalent of that would be women trying to "turn gay men straight". Which is literally the opposite of what's happening in yaoi ships.
The mental gymnastics in this makes me wonder if OP just wanted an excuse to bash straight women for... not providing free content that YOU specifically want to consume? These people don't owe you anything, Anon. This just reeks of entitlement.
If you think about it for just a second, it makes a great deal of sense why straight women would be attracted to romance stories between gay men. I suggest you try that, Anon, instead of twisting facts to fit your narrative.
The irony of coming into a blog that fiercely advocates against antis - people that shame other people for what they like in fiction - and then proceeding to shame and name-call other people for what they like in fiction - would be funny, if it weren't so sad.
this and also another anon said it better than I could
I don't know how to say this to tumblr puritans who act as useful idiots to fascists and terfs, but if someone has actually done real tangible harm to another real person, whatever kinks they might have could not be less relevant.
I seriously can't emphasize this point enough. I am getting so sick and tired of callout posts that either list nothing important and act like having a kink is what makes you evil, or make a longer list of nothing important, emphasizing how bad the kinks are, only to tack on right at the end "by the way, they also raped an 11-year-old" like that's not fucking important or anything.
Or a slight variation; "This person is bad because they raped an 11-year-old, and also they like loli porn, which makes it EVEN WORSE!!!" like no the fuck it doesn't get your head out of your ass I could not give less of a fuck what someone's kinks are and it's actually really creepy that you do.
"This person has a long history of enjoying murder in fiction; The Dark Brotherhood questline, the Evil path in Fable, GTA, Call of Duty, Counter Strike, the list is endless! We need to cancel this dangerous murderer who so clearly has a very tangible fixation on murder! It's disgusting! Don't they know that murder is illegal!? Don't they know that murder is terrible and should never be romanticized!? Oh and also one time they shot and killed their mother in a church, but that's just a bonus fact and not what should be the main point of the post of course! Everyone knows fictional characters matter more than real people!"
Okay. Log off. Go outside and feel the sun on your face for a while. Only one thing here actually matters and if you can't tell which it is then you're dumber than a sack of bricks. This is exactly why nobody can take callout posts seriously anymore, because you people seem to think stealing a wheel of cheese from an Oblivion guard is a real pressing issue that requires real community action. You are not serious people. Go the fuck to sleep. Take some vitamins. Drink some water. FUCK.
Whenever an anti becomes profic, an angel gains its wings.
a piece of art being "revealed to be" fetish art doesn't diminish it btw
One person can separate fiction from reality, doesn’t harm anyone in real life, thinks harassment and censorship are bad. The other scams a real person, who’s trying to support an artist, and then brags about their literal crime online.
But antis will tell you they’re the good and normal ones 😍

do any of you even enjoy reading or watching fiction at all? if i wanted the plot with virtually nothing else i would read the wikipedia page
Why would the way a character does their normal life not be relevant to the plot or characterization??? Hello?????
How is it that you can a music library of like 1,200+ absolute bangers but as soon as you put it on shuffle in a group setting it's like. anime opening you added in 2010. homestuck parody song. musical artist who was cancelled last year for kidnapping and eating children in his basement. Hamilton
I can't believe some people are actually reblogging this like "Tch. Omg, so embarrassing OP, I can't believe you would ever admit to liking Hamilton 😏 " like ok, first of all congratulations for hatching as a fully formed adult in 2022 from the pure white egg of a virgin swan i guess. Raised in a cave on a diet consisting solely of nuts and berries and leftist twitter clapbacks. "ooooooh, I've never had a complicated relationship with a piece of art that was phenomenally well-received at the time but aged like milk as later reflection revealed the fundamental flaws in its premise that were in fact present from its inception but which I didn't notice because I was 17 and hadn't heard of neoliberalism yet" Should we throw a party? Should we invite Anthony Fantano? Anyway second of all. you draw the line at Lin Manuel Miranda but you're fine with basement guy?
