My arms boy are they
mold pisses me off so much
oh you have to eat your produce the moment it leaves the store or the fuckin Hungering Dust will get it. and. poison your food
I ran into this post years ago and to be honest, it has completely reoriented the way I engage with food.
Like. Iâve always sorta understood that things grow moldy or stale or sour or such if left out, but I never really internalized it in a meaningful way.
But now Iâm just like.
Yeah. The hungering dust. There exists omnivorous dust in the air that will eat my food if I donât.
Those bagels have been sitting there for a week. Are we going to eat them soon or are we leaving them for the hungering dust?
Pizzaâs been sitting out on the counter for an hour. Everyoneâs enjoying the pizza, but if we donât want âeveryoneâ to include the hungering dust then we should probably put it away soon.
Thatâs just. Thatâs how food works to me now. There exists an invisible predator in the air that hungers for your yummies, and it will not hesitate to eat your food if you donât make the effort to protect and preserve it. And eat what canât be preserved before the dust can.
Life-changing.
food doesnât actually âgo badâ, it just gets eaten by something else first
Iâm getting Dr Who flashbacks
What the fuck do you mean if I donât maintain proper personal hygiene the hungering dust will try and eat me? Fuck off you dusty bitch, Iâm not for eating

Gentrification creates a stifling homogeneity in urban areas that makes it less suited for the everyday lives of the lower class and more suited towards the leisure and tourism of those with expendable income.
An old, decrepit laundromat gets replaced by an upscale bakery? And people are mad? Itâs not that the poor hate organic vegan cupcakes, itâs that most of us donât have a way to do laundry in our own home.
Run-down corner stores replaced by hand-made designer clothing boutiques? We donât hate your eco-fabric shawl, but I canât eat that for dinner after work like I could have a can of beans I grabbed from that corner store when I donât have time to take the bus to the real grocery store after work.
What gentrification brings in and of itself is not typically bad, itâs that gentrification brings institutions of leisure and pleasure and makes it so that the poor have to go farther out of their way for basic necessities. It turns low-income living spaces into local tourist attractions. It can even create food deserts by putting restaurants, grocery stores, etc. in that the majority of the lower class cannot afford.
Imagine if someone totally renovated your house and turned it into a mini theme park - they took away your sleeping space, where you prepare food, where you clean yourself and get ready for your day, and replaced it with things that will please people who are visiting, who have their own homes they can go back to, who are here not for their entire life but just as a distraction from their otherwise mundane existence. Itâs not that you hate theme parks, itâs not like youâve never been to a theme park and vow to never visit one again. Itâs just that you need to live! To survive! And the leisure of those who have more than you should not invalidate your existence.
the fact that "eco" and "ethical" are two separate concerns in the global north, and that "eco" is a much more popular concern, with many "eco" products being made in actual sweatshops, is a big part of why i am The Joker
if you think this is an exaggeration or splitting hairs where it doesn't matter:
i used to work at a Local Organic Produce store that's popular with the lefties in my city who are interested in food justice. i quit for a lot of reasons, mostly the boss, but something i will always remember is one of our suppliers coming in to drop off produce, being told her check wasn't ready, and her laughing and responding it didn't matter -- even a low bank account was more than enough to pay the migrants who picked her produce. i am not filling in any blanks here. she said this.
after quitting, this was a common story i told people about my time there. some then became annoyed at me, acting like i was a wokescold trying to undermine the store's "eco" mission with unrelated "ethical" concerns. but, like -- if food justice isn't for the people making food, who the fuck is it for?
like, don't get me wrong. my contention here is that the things go hand in hand, and that something which is unethical isn't actually eco. after all, humans are a part of the fucking ecosystem, and if a product can only be made by unsustainably exploiting humans, then it's unsustainable. doesn't matter which chemicals were used in making it, or whether or not animals were factory farmed.
they *cannot* be separated. a product cannot be either eco or ethical â it must be both. a product that is made through human suffering cannot be eco for the reasons you said; a product that causes human suffering by contributing to the destruction of the ecosystem cannot be ethical. it must be both and we must insist on both

In 1982, conceptual artist Agnes Denes planted and harvested a two-acre field of wheat on a rubble-strewn landfill in Lower Manhattan, located just a few blocks from Wall Street and the World Trade Center, for her incredible project Wheatfield â A Confrontation.
The work was commissioned by the Public Art Fund and took four months to complete. Denes and her team meticulously prepared the infertile landfill, bringing in soil, digging 285 furrows by hand, and planting the seeds. For months, they tended to the field, maintaining an irrigation system, weeding, and fertilizing. The effort culminated in a successful harvest, yielding over 1,000 pounds of golden wheat.

"it would be so good if it was good" will haunt you but "it's extremely good, except for the one or two parts which are so bad it's genuinely kind of insulting" will straight up drive you insane
One thing that's so underrated about PHM is Eva Stratt's appearance. She doesn't have the lipstick, sleek bun, pencil skirt (or even pantsuit), and heels look that is so often the uniform of female characters in similar roles. She doesn't wear makeup (as much as any other actor). She wears her hair down or in the simplest ten-second buns. She wears softs, easy to move in clothes that are weather appropriate. Why would she spend extra time making her physical body less efficient?
I wanted to add to this that in the movie especially, getting her played by a middle aged woman with visible signs of aging was a badass move. The only person who can save humanity is a middle aged woman in a turtleneck with tired eyes.

I really LOVE Boromirâs costume design in the PJ films, weâre gonna talk about so strap in.
The point of PJ Boromirâs design is that he dresses more like a king than Aragorn doesâŚ.. (in the same way that  PJ Boromir initially also *acts* more like the king of Gondor than Aragorn does, staying in Minas Tirith to lead/defend his people while Aragorn is afraid to accept the responsibility of doing that.)
Boromir dresses in vibrant royal red and blue, Aragorn dresses in muddy brown. Boromirâs clothing is Regal and has all the royal symbols of Gondor intricately woven into the fabric, but Aragornâs Ranger clothing looks like muddy garbage he dug out of the dumpster behind the Prancing Pony.
(âall that is gold does not glitterâ indeed)
Like, THE LEVEL OF DETAIL in PJ Boromirâs outfit is so great. Thereâs subtle White tree/flower/leaf imagery everywhereâŚ..
I love the white tree symbols on his bracers âŚthe golden falling leaf/floral patterns on his sleevesâŚthe intricate leaf-inspired clasps on the tunicâŚthere are even subtle floral patterns on the belt!  Like?? Boromirâs got style!!!!!
After Boromirâs death, Aragorn takes up Boromirâs White Tree bracers.
And when he becomes King, he dresses in the same royal red and blue that Boromir used to wear, and has the symbols of Gondor (the White tree, leaves, stars, wings, etc) integrated into his clothing the way Boromir did.
Idk I just really love how, as Aragorn becomes more Kingly, he starts to dress more like a man of GondorâŚâŚ.more like the way Boromir used to dress.Â
Boromirâs fashion sense was so good that the King of Gondor stole his look
As heir to the Steward of Gondor, Boromir was a prince in everything but name. His identity and role from birth was to one day stand in the place of a Lost King.
Aragorn, a.k.a. that Lost King, was raised an orphan in secret by people who knew his mere existence meant he had powerful enemies. They called him Estel, literally hope, but didnât tell him who he was until he was something like 20 years old (when his future father-in-law handed him a broken sword, a ridiculously long and dubious family tree, and his daughterâs hand in marriage but only if you get a real job, good luck). A Lost King to a Lost People, he spent most of his life prior to the events of The Lord of the Rings maintaining the secret of his identity and wandering, learning, listening for the time when The Return of the King was called for. Itâs no coincidence this comes about as he helps someone as unlikely and seemingly insignificant as Frodo do something as important and staggering as save the world, because thatâs what a good and humble king would do. In fact I think it is Frodo (in the book) who first catches a glimmer of something beyond Aragornâs grim outward appearance, while everyone else is still hung up on his general unseemliness. (You can bet I want to whip out Isaiah 53 for the parallels right about now.)
But even Boromir, though understandably skeptical at first, recognizes Aragorn for what he truly is before the endâsomeone who can succeed where Boromir has failed. (âI do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to you I will not let the White City fall, nor our people fail.â) Thatâs right: Boromir, who carried the burden of âit is long since we had any hopeâ on his shoulders his entire, haunted life, died knowing his king was coming home.
tl:dr The bracers were a nice touch.
*bursts into tears*
the default way for things to taste is good. we know this because "tasty" means something tastes good. conversely, from the words "smelly" and "noisy" we can conclude that the default way for things to smell and sound is bad. interestingly there are no corresponding adjectives for the senses of sight and touch. the inescapable conclusion is that the most ordinary object possible is invisible and intangible, produces a hideous cacophony, smells terrible, but tastes delicious. and yet this description matches no object or phenomenon known to science or human experience. so what the fuck
this is what ancient greek philosophy is like
False! âSightlyâ is a positive word, so the default way for things to work is good as well.
The true most ordinary object is beautiful, horrible sounding, very smelly, intangible, and delicious.
I still donât think it matches anything in existence but to truly understand a thing one must know its true nature.
"touchy" is also a word! however it's mostly used for things that aren't objects, like subjects of conversation. it either means "oversensitive and irritable" or "requires careful handling/wording, delicate"
i think the second one works well for our hypothetical object. so we can use that.
therefore, the Default Object is:
beautiful
makes a horrendous sound
smells absolutely awful
is very fragile
tastes delicious
and i still cannot think of anything that matches this
behold, the default object!
DEFAULT OBJECT FOUND

I love how all the comments at once as completely accurate but still cannot encapsulate what the fuck is going on here.
During lockdown I worked on two projects: one was a ditch that needed to be cleared out of tules and cattails but turtles lived there. So Iâd follow the excavator scooping out the vegetation and make sure no turtles were trapped in it, and if they were, freeing them and putting them in a safe part of the ditch. Itâs extremely muddy, sticky work. Hold on, I have a photo of one of the guys:
No one is having a good time.
The OTHER project was going to destroy rare salamander habitat and so we had to buy some appropriate habitat. But every mitigation bank was sold out. I found a guy selling future mitigation bank credits through the powers of making a lot of phone calls and then, through the power of polite requests, got our Wildlife Agency rep to sign off on this plan. Except. You canât say âI gave seven figures to a guy who promises to someday make habitatâ, that guy could abscond. You also canât be like âI supes promise to pay for mitigation AFTER the project.â because WE could not pay out. We were, for various reasons, disinclined to delay the project. The Wildlife Agency rep â bless her, she really held my hand through this whole process â was like âhow about you put the money in escrow?â Great. A plan.
So I call an escrow company â which was not an organization used to being cold-called, much less by someone standing next to an excavator, covered in mud. I was trying to provide only the information needed to enable success and NOT go on a five-ten minute rant on salamander life cycles. Also I was DEEPLY out of my depth.
âHi! I was wondering if you could hold money in an escrow account for a longer period?â
â⌠Well, in some circumstances we can hold it for up to 90 days â but weâd need to know the circumstances.â
âAh! I need someone to hold it for up to two years? Do you know of any companies whoâd be able to help me?â
âWhat. What is happening with the house that this is necessary?â
âOh uh. Itâs not a house, per se, itâs a rare salamander mitigation bank. It needs to be built.â
âThe salamanders need a custom house?â
âNo no no no no uh. They need a pond. Weâre paying someone to make a pond. But! They need time to make the pond. Hence the escrow account. So. Who could?â
âSo like a lizard house?â
âThey are amphibians?â
âLet me. Transfer you to my supervisor.â
<after a pause a different person comes on the line but also unfortunately at this moment the excavator operator fishes a turtle out of the ditch.>
âHi! Sorry one second I need to put down the phone to help a turtle.â <interlude> âThank you so much for waiting! Iâm back! Can you talk to me about escrow options?â
âWhat was happening with the turtle?â
âOh it was trapped in some cattails but I got it out. Sorry for putting down the phone â you need both hands to grab them because they bite! I need an escrow account to hold funds for up to two years?â
âFor a house for lizards? Are you a zoo?â
âAh! Salamanders, actually! And a mitigation bank, not a house. I actually work for X organization.â
âWhat is a mitigation bank?â (The critical question!)
âOh when youâre building something and need to impact some rare species habitat you can pay someone to make new rare species habitat.â
âHuh.â
âBut this habitat is incomplete! It doesnât have a pond. So my organization wonât pay until AAAAAAAAA excuse me sorry I fell into a ditch. My organization needs there to be a pond there before they pay for the property. So one path forward is an escrow account.â
âAre you OK?â
âYes absolutely!â
âWhatâs the cost of this bank?â
âTwo million dollars.â
<the tenor of the conversation became markedly warmer at this point.>
âOK if you get my your contact information then Iâll email you some options and then we can discuss â do you have time now?â
âUnfortunately I do not have email access right this second. Also I need to get out of the ditch. Could we put a pin in this conversation and circle back tomorrow?â
âOf course, I look forward to working with your organization?â
âThank you so much!â
âGood luck with the. Ditch. And turtles?â
âThank you! Have a great day!â
