common advice for social anxiety is to tell yourself "people aren't going to think less of you just because you said something a bit daft" but the thing is. sometimes they will. and you just have to learn to be cool with that and to treat it as a dnd random encounter rather than letting it ruin your whole day
And remember that even if they do they'll probably forget it within a day or two because they have other things to do.
Well, the birthstone is peridot and I think yellow-green is pretty good.
I mean, in some very interesting Technically Correct ways, they didn't actually die? Now, they're very much no longer alive. But the forces involved are such that they didn't get any of the usual cellular processes of death, they simply went from biology to physics in less time than it takes a signal to travel down your optic nerve.
if you go from biology to physics without dying first you don’t go to heaven the uber driver went over this
This suggests the Uber driver was supposed to be the one to drive them there.
and another thing: no child should ever be made fun of for things they love especially by their parents
it should go without saying but apparently it needs to be said over and over and over again because every time i hear my mom tease my sister for playing wolfquest, every time i hear a teacher tease a kid for doodling, every time i hear a babysitter laugh at a kid explaining the plot of a show they like, it drives a fuckin stake through my heart because i was that kid once.
i was made fun of enough times by adults, by peers, for liking something and wanting to share it that i just. didn’t. anymore.
dont fucking tease kids for liking things. even if you think its cringe. ESPECIALLY. if you think its cringe. because the way you speak and act towards them when they are sharing themselves with you STICKS and they will think of it years down the line.
BE NICE TO KIDS. BE NICE TO KIDS. LISTEN WHEN THEY SPEAK TO YOU. BE. FUCKING. NICE. TO. KIDS.
I was a substitute teacher for a little while between grad schools, and one day I had a middle school math class for the morning. The work they were assigned wasn’t *especially* hard, and one little girl knocked it out in 20 minutes. She started drawing what was very obviously Sans Undertale, and when I noticed I wanted to be supportive, and had the following exchange:
“What’s that you’re drawing?”
*panicking* “It’s nothing, I’m sorry, I’ll put it away.”
“No it’s okay, I was just curious about it.”
“It’s nothing. I don’t want to get in trouble.”
“You’re not in trouble, I just thought it looked like a character from a video game I like.”
Her face *lit up* the second I gave her the smallest bit of approval. She started asking me if I’d heard of various AUs for Undertale, and I tried to follow along as she explained her favorites. I obviously had to keep an eye on the rest of the class, answering questions and helping with algebra, but each time I passed her desk she had more things to tell me.
Anyway, it was very cute, but also a little sad how obviously starved she was for someone kind to talk about her stories with. Kids deserve to have someone in their corner, and it takes no effort at all to smile and listen if they have something they want to share. Preserve the earnestness you want to see in the world.
I had a students who was looking at her tablet before class, and I noticed the screen was COVERED in icons of ao3. I asked her what the fics were- I think it was a manga or anime. She was stunned I recognised them.

me personally i like both of them having focus but yeah I blame andy weir because the guy doesn't seem to have any interest in actually thinking about other cultures or even letting his characters have inner lives for that matter. sorry if you're a big book fan, his writing is just really lacking when it comes to the humanities and social sciences.
I mean... yes and no? i'm not precisely disagreeing with you so much as using this ask as a jumping off point to discuss my own Thoughts on the matter. I am a book fan, and I think "Andy Weir can't do characterisation" or even "Andy Weir is a bad writer" has become a sort of phm fandom meme in a way that's really interesting to me. I definitely agree that characterisation and particularly writing distinct character voices is not really his strong suit, and it's certainly true that he could do with contemplating the humanities and social sciences some more. But I don't think that makes him a bad writer across the board to deprioritise those things, he's just a writer who's more interested in plot than characterisation, which is a perfectly acceptable thing for a writer to be.
I also get the impression that a lot of phm fans on tumblr just haven't read much in the way of science fiction, or at least aren't into any harder science fiction than star trek, because believe me, it gets a lot worse than this. But there's also science fiction out there that's a lot more interested in feelings, and sociopolitical implications, and character arcs, if that's what you're into! But I don't agree that that's what all science fiction should be, or that it's automatically bad if a science fiction work is more interested in (for example) developing hypothetical mechanisms for space travel technology, and then figuring out interesting ways to break it and fix it again.
Second of all, I would actually slightly disagree that his characters don't have inner lives! Again, it's not the book's main priority, but Weir is actually pretty good at putting characters in situations that give rise to interesting internal and interpersonal conflict. He uses his characters as tools in service of the plot, but that's not a bad thing. I really like Grace's character arc, and the central tension of cowardice and selfishness vs self-sacrifice and collaboration in the face of a world-ending threat. They didn't just make all that up for the movie, that came from the book. Grace and Stratt's tangled dynamic and their mutual betrayal? Developed in different ways in the movie, but it came from the book. Grace and Rocky's friendship? Book. There's a lot of stuff (like Eridian culture) that I'd have liked him to do a lot more with, but if Weir was truly completely hopeless at characterisation, then I'm not sure how he managed to write these characters that so many people find compelling!
This feels wild because yes- have you ever read other hard sci-fi? The point is exploring concepts and ideas, with the characters being mobile cameras for the reader to see through. Asimov never wrote any characters who were not robots, even when the story had no robots in them. I was actually stunned when I read The Lost World and found an early speculative fiction story with great characters and an actual sense of humor. Jules Verne was incapable of writing any characters you didn't want to punch in the face.
Character has a PhD: they’re really smart and knowledgable about their field!
Character has 2 PhDs: either they did a dual degree program and are braggy about it, had a life-changing experience after their first degree and pivoted their whole career, or they find the structure of being a PhD student, despite all its stress, more comfortable and familiar than the stress of finding a Real Job and have a very indulgent advisor.
Character has 3 PhDs: who keeps accepting them to PhD programs. Either this person needs psychological help or their department needs to be investigated for its academic standards. Probably both
Character has 4+ PhDs: if they aren’t an undercover vampire or something then no they don’t lol
Character has 6+ PhDs: they invented an entirely new field of science and decided to take all the honourary degrees that were offered.
dino saurs were not scary monsters they were mamas with eggs and when they drank water they were like fuckk yessss waterrrr
I really recommend this book for making dinosaurs feel like living animals with their own inner lives. They live, love, breathe, have their own inner lives and families. They aren't people, but they have their own intelligence. Also the author helped work on Jurassic Park, and inserted himself in the story in the form of a white pterodactyl who likes blowing bubbles.
using "what were YOU doing at the devils sacrament" to mean "yeah i made an embarrassing reference but you understood it which is also embarrassing" is very funny to me
my favorite part is that absolutely nobody says this except here. so if you use it in public, it's a dead giveaway that you spent the last ten years on tumblr. but then again, they recognized it, which means they were at the devil's sacrament
I tested this theory in the wild the other day at work. I was on a call with my department lead and a few other folks and I replied to an email the DL had sent me, thinking that, because he was on this call, he wouldn't notice when I sent it and would not catch me multitasking.
However, he replied to said email within five minutes, asking a question that required an answer. So I answered and was like "Also, I was going to apologize for answering emails during this call, but I see we're both here at the Devil's Sacrament, so I don't think an apology is necessary."
I watched him read that on screen and try not to laugh. And then at the end of the call as everyone started saying goodbye, he goes, "Hey, MJ, I meant to tell you. I like your shoelaces."
And I looked straight into my camera, stone cold serious, and said, "Thanks. I stole them from the president."
And the rest of the team was like, "What...the fuck...?" before he abruptly ended the call for everyone.
So now my DL and I know this about each other. He could be any one of us.
At a certain point, the appropriate response to "What were you doing at the devil's sacrament" becomes "stealing shoelaces from the president."
Reblog if you were stealing shoelaces from the President
Well what ELSE were we supposed to do at the devil's sacrament????
I do like that the meme's idea of the president hasn't changed (Obama) otherwise it would be 'thanks, I used them to garotte the president'.
DISTRESSING NEWS FROM THE FRONT (my friends groupchat) THEY SAY I HAVE SHORT ENERGY. IS THIS TRUE??
DO YOU THINK I POTES LADYNORMALGIRL STEALINGPOTATOES AM SHORT BASED ON VIBES??
i think ur short
i think ur medium heighted
i think ur tall
who are you
HELP NO WHY DID SO MANY PEOPLE SAY SHORT DISABUSE URSELF OF THIS NOTION!!! I'M A 5'7 (170cm) BRITISH GIRL IM SOLIDLY MEDIUM
I assume if stealing potatoes is your main employ then being short would be a useful trait as it means you are closer to said potatoes.

i cannot explain to you just how jarring it is to return to phm after a week of flashbacks only scenes to write my stratt and grace fic. like she did it. she actually did it. she factory reset his ass into a better person
who the FUCK are you and what have you done with ryland grace
BUT HERE'S THE THING
Grace has this idea of who he was. He wakes up in a spaceship with a mission to save the earth and no way home. Ergo, he was the sort of person to volunteer to save the earth and die doing it. He's a hero. EVERYTHING Grace does in the novel is because he thinks that's who he is.
It makes finding out the truth all the more devastating.
Happy "There Will Come Soft Rains" day to all who celebrate
one of the most challenging skills i've had to learn as an adult is the art of figuring out whether i'm proportionally annoyed with someone or just tired and overstimulated and looking for reasons to be pissed off
congratulations to the only post i've ever had breach 100k notes without any real discourse or fighting, just a lot of people wearily going, oh, god, same
Or sometimes you just don't like someone and there's no reason for it. They're perfectly decent, you just don't want to be near them. It's called the bitch eating crackers test. If they were over in a corner eating crackers, would you be like (even if just in your head) 'there's that bitch over there eating crackers, grr, I hate her?' Then that's the problem.

Flags Mashup Bot is really out here trying to start World War III
UPDATES
My fav part is that it is genuinely just a bot. All it does is take two countries, puts the 2nd country's colours on the 1st country's flag and mixes their names together.
Literally the only other thing behind it is that the bot weights picking the second country based on how close they are to the first, and basic geography + history means that's also where you're going to get the most aggressive relations. This isn't some guy trolling by making things specifically to piss people off, it's some guy who likes flags going "wouldn't it be fun to mix flags together, let's write a bot for that" and accidentally creating a whole meme culture of "days since flag mashup bot last tried to start WW3 = 0" and the like.
This is a pretty cool one though

think about this every time i watch videos about youtuber drama
What does this film pioneer have to do with skateboarding? Nothing. But I believe Werner is one of us.
He's one of my favourite directors for a reason. He just seems utterly fascinated about everything in humanity.
See Marvel has managed to absolutely beat their own cinematic IP to death and I personally have no intention to see whatever phase 43 code orange Epsilon Delta persimmon harpsichord appendix 3 subsection A movie they intend to drop next BUT
When they inevitably do that anyways- and it's mid, because they're waist-deep in the mire of their own post-ironic, allergic-to-sincerity, quippy making- what I DO want to see is this:
It's very specific, but if you're still onboard, stick with me.
Rocket Raccoon and Bucky Barnes. Road trip sidequest. I do not care how they get there, but it has to happen. Maybe they're on the way to help the main gang. Obviously a sapient space raccoon and a 100-year-old legally dead ex-agent of a terrorist organization are not getting on a plane, so there you go.
Now, it's very important here that Bucky does not have the metal arm. I don't care how he lost it but he doesn't have it. So Rocket has to steal a new one- which is perfect, is it is already established that this is his bizarre life's passion. That is this movie's B plot.
Now once they get it, that's when plot A storyline's Big Bad comes in. Team Eyeliner arrives on scene, and now with the added support the good guys are holding their own, but they need juuuuust a little more firepower.
Rhodey is there in the suit, but he's been hit. Doesn't have manual control of the system anymore. The only way to get him back in the game is for someone else to pilot the thing remotely, but it's risky- he would be fully relying on that person to not only pilot it effectively, but avoid getting him killed in the process.
And on top of that, as major as that obviously is, we also have to consider that Tony is gone. This is probably the last suit beyond his own that he ever worked on, and if it's destroyed beyond repair... that's it.
The good news is, they have a specialist. The bad news is, it's Rocket. And Rocket literally just showed up with a bedraggled Buck, pulling up on the scene and falling out of a shitty little early-2000's Volvo full of empty cans with a "my kid's an honor student" bumper sticker slapped on the back and a freshly duct-taped-on arm that looks like it was made for a 98 year old florist- certainly not something that would be of much use in the kind of combat he's used to.
And it is at this point that we must ask ourselves a question.
We must ask ourselves THE question.
What kind of man would hand the right-hand-man to a man manning a second-hand left hand the right to man a man's last left manned mechanical man
Bonus: They're looking for the lab that made Rocket.
