Sari salesmen are frequently male because women arenât given priority to inherit family businesses, are married at a young age, are prevented from going to college or getting a job by their fathers and husbands, and are sexually harassed when working. They are beneficiaries and enforcers of a system of male dominance and female submission (you know, patriarchy).
I remember getting fitted for a sari blouse at 11 and the male workers joking about my bust measurements and laughing about it to my face. I canât even count the number of times sari salesmen have harassed me or said something misogynistic or creepy.
They are savvy salesmen who have adapted to sell a gendered product to female clientele, not brave patriarchy-defying, gender non-conformity heroes.
