the "empathy fatigue" stuff is also very revealing because when you examine health professionals' self-reporting on the matter there is a specific type of person they describe losing empathy for- unsurprisingly, it's people with particularly chronic health issues and disability, drug users, people who "refuse to take care of themselves" and especially anyone with a health condition perceived to be "their own fault". very often what they describe as "empathy fatigue" is actually just the mask slipping on the seething contempt they already held

Y'all are such assholes. yes it's fucking frustrating as all hell to have patients that self sabotage and delay/prevent their healing. It makes you wonder why you even bother. Why don't you try going to school for a decade and see 40 patients a day and then judge 🙄 it isn't contempt it is extreme frustration that you know exactly how to help your patient and pull strings to help them, only for them to sell the support you got them to do more drugs. Or to see people's treatment be delayed significantly because people are taking up beds by something totally preventable.
