Honestly, as a German I can not quite understand the obsession of the English speaking world with the question whether a word exists or not. If you have to express something for which there is no word, you have to make a new one, preferably by combining well-known words, and in the very same moment it starts to exist. Agree?

@thatswhywelovegermany So, 3 quick questions on how to do this myself;

1: How do you decide which words to use, and which to omit? I can tell there aren’t any prepositions or articles, but are any other words purposefully left out? Also, are most verbs left without conjugating them? This question is mostly based on the last example, where the word “down” isn’t included in the smaller words, and “throw” is left as-is, but translated to “throwing”.

2: What order do the words go in? Does it have to do with German sentence structure, is it ease of reading, personal choice?

3: How do you know whether to use der/das/die, especially when combining words with different genders? Since English only has “the,” I’ve always had a hard time grasping gendered nouns in other languages. Also, would any of these big compound words switch from nominative to accusative or dative?

1: The last example was a particularly complicated one to translate because it involved the translation of a idiomatc phrase. That’s why the translation is not word by word. Der Wurf is the throw (noun), not to throw (verb).

2: The main part goes last, the descriptive parts come before it. In the English phrases, it comes first. As you see, the depression comes first, but die Verzweiflung comes last; the inability comes first, but die Unfähigkeit comes last.

3: The genus for the whole compound word comes from the last part. Compound words can also change cass. In that case, the ending of the last word is changed, but all others remain unchanged.
