AI is a dangerous tool. If you get sucked into it and offload all your thinking to it, yeah, you're gonna be screwed. But just because it's dangerous doesn't mean that no one knows how to wield it effectively. We REALLY have to have more education about AI and the potential benefits it has to learning. By being open to conversations like this, we can empower the next generation that grows up with AI in schools to use it wisely and effectively.

i've tried toying with AI since it got released to the public in 2021/22 and back then it was frankly unusable. yeah it said what you wanted it to say, but the sources? nonexistent most of the time (literally, if u asked for them, the titles were just made up). and its reliability? 50/50 at best, it was like picking random twitter posts, yeah some were true, but most just sounded true. even now, the chatbots barely improved.

if u give them a book, or a limited pool from which they can source their info it works fairly well, but the summaries and analyses AI creates are painfully average, with little to no substance. but even so, open AI doesn't want you to use it in this way, thats why they restrict the amount of docs you can give to chat gpt to sample from and most ppl are not tech savy enough to build their own AI models.

so, yeah its understandable that AI usage is shamed, if u think about it, its careless to use it, especially as a tutor, because it is so flawed still. and yeah, there are tweaked versions but the biggest problems with AI are not just accidental quirks, but features that result DIRECTLY from its architecture, like its hallucinations, as it cant differentiate nonsense from factual truth.

1. Take a deep breath - Let out all that anxiety over the project you’re doing so you can think clearly

2. Pull up a clean sheet of paper and something to write with - You can use a fresh word doc, new page in your journal or planner or whatever else works for you, the idea is that after this you will have a physical list to look at to help keep you on task.

3. Identify your obstacles (i.e. What is keeping you from doing this task?) - For example: Is it scary? If so, why? Does it feel too hard? Is there something else that you feel needs to be done first? Write these down!

4. Plan how to overcome your obstacles - This can take some creativity and some thinking to best figure out how to overcome the obstacle. I’ve included examples below for potential plans.

Example 1:

Obstacle: I don’t know the best way to approach this task.

Plan: Brainstorm on paper ways that you might be able to approach this task. Google ways to accomplish this task. Review lecture notes or example homework problems on how to accomplish this task. Ask a friend/coworker/classmate how they might start the task. Write down everything you feel might be relevant until you feel like you know where to start and where to go.

Example 2:

Obstacle: This feels too big and overwhelming so I don’t want to do it.

Plan: Break down the tasks into smaller, tiny tasks. Make them as small as you need to make them feel manageable. Write down all these tasks check them off as you go. 

Example 3:

Obstacle: I’m waiting for someone to get back to me with comments on this project but they’re taking too long.

Plan: Follow up with this person and identify what you can do without their comments. For example, if you’re waiting for someone to sent you a section of a project or paper, write your section to the best of your ability. Can you have someone else review this project and still get good feedback. Or tell yourself you’ll revise/edit your project and integrate their comments later when you get to them. Often when I identify what feels out of order, I can move past it or put it farther down my list so I’m no longer just stuck waiting.

5. Encourage yourself and commend yourself for filling in the gaps actively that your brain couldn’t do on it’s own today. - You’re doing a great job!

anyway my overall review is that it was really funny when ferns had cheat codes to it, would have loved some of that in the newer flower story arc in part because it’s the closest thread I can grasp to actually understanding something (presumably????) deeper about this weird sex system from a flaw/exploit it had (and still has in ferns, to be fair), but flowers just seem to treat it like something to compensate for and patched it in an update, so reducing the gametophytes down as small as possible and leaving the female ones attached directly to the sporophyte IS surprising when people learn about it. you would never even know they had any kind of wild sex cycle because half of the stages are microscopic and protected behind like 8 layers of tissue, which makes sense because yes they’re ‘vulnerable’ stages but it’s still annoying of them to do to me personally, you know?

Why does it matter? Future you would like to avoid the pain, limited motion, and fall risk that goes along with worsening posture.

What’s the focus?

1. Keep the flexibility in your spine

2. Stretch the muscles in the front

3. Strengthen the muscle in the back

Here are some simple things you can do daily while sitting and when you get up to go into the bathroom or the kitchen

Keep the flexibility by doing these repeated movements: 10 repetitions several times a day

The goal is to give yourself a double or triple chin. Keep your nose pointing forward, don’t let it tip up or down

Thoracic extension- use a chair with a seat back that comes up to the level of your shoulder blades. Try to bend back over the top of the chair without arching away from the seat back and without extending your neck. If the pressure from the top of the chair is uncomfortable you can place a towel there

Stretch the muscles in the front by using a door frame. This one will feel good afterwards

If this isn’t enough of a stretch you can do one side at a time. If you have the right arm up step forward with the right foot and turn slightly to the left. Then do it on the other side.

Strengthen the muscles in the back by squeezing your shoulder blades together for a count of 10 and then repeating 10 times. You can do this several times a day Hint: Don’t lift your shoulder blades up

There are lots more exercises for strengthening your back muscles but this is a good starting point and easy to do. I like doing it while driving
