Pinned post time! (Not to be confused with "Pin-Lee post time," which we love but which is sadly not this post.)
Heyo! Welcome to Murderbot Moodboard, a blog for celebrating The Murderbot Diaries and the Murderbot TV show by sharing quotes, fanart/fanfic, memes, screencaps, meta discussions, and basically any post which sounds like it could be about Murderbot and friends clients/mutual administrative assistants.
All fandom posts will be tagged #murderbot for easy searching. Posts about the books will be tagged #the murderbot diaries, posts about the show will be tagged #murderbot tv, and both tags will be included only on posts where both apply. Posts that have been scheduled using the Tumblr queue function are tagged #sanqueueary moon.
This blog tries to make its posts as accessible as possible. All images I post include an image description in the alt text (and if I forget, feel free to remind me!). Did I tag your post as #cw eyestrain? I promise that's not an insult to your art; please read this Tumblr post about tagging images for the safety of people with seizures and migraines.
This blog is enthusiastically supportive of the TV show and its cast. Posts about new TV episodes will also be tagged #murderbot spoilers through the Saturday or Sunday after the episode drops on Apple TV+. Posts about the books will only receive spoiler tags if the book was published within the past month, so if you're new to the books and want to avoid spoilers, I'd suggest filtering #the murderbot diaries. Other commonly used tags are discussed in more detail at the bottom of this post (below the cut).
This blog is positive towards both canon and non-canon ships and commonly reblogs some shipping-related posts. Fandom is where we play around with canon for fun (see this Tumblr post)! (I am strongly against the harassment of other fans for their fanworks or headcanons; to quote this Tumblr post by allthingswhumpyandangsty, we should not "[value] the nonexistent lives of fictional characters more than real living, breathing people." Or to quote this Tumblr post by scottstilesliam, "No ship, or any aspect of a fictional universe, is important enough to treat another real life human being badly." Also, it's okay to be sex-repulsed and dislike ship fics, but there's nothing wrong with people who write ship fics, especially when they're properly tagged. Ship and let ship, folks! Murderbot/Gurathin posts are tagged #murderathin; Murderbot/Mensah posts are tagged #mensahbot; Murderbot/ART posts are tagged #murderhelion and/or #mutual administrative assistants.
BTW my main is @notcruvusmemes, so if you see me interacting with your posts from that blog, it's the same person. :) Also if I reblog a post here that's clearly off-topic it was probably meant for my main. (This happens now and then, for I am very human.)

Blog tagging system
In the past, my go-to fandom tag for this blog was #the murderbot diaries, and I didn't often tag things as just #murderbot. Since we started seeing content for the Apple TV+ show, I decided to change my tagging system to follow what I said above regarding #murderbot, #the murderbot diaries, and #murderbot tv. Posts about the TV show prior to a few months ago may be tagged #murderbot show.
I only tag posts with #martha wells when they are specifically about her, such as links to her interviews, screenshots of her social media posts, or posts that specifically discuss her writing style/choices (Doyleist instead of Watsonian perspective).
Quotes from the books are tagged #murderbot quotes.
Fanart and fanfic are usually tagged #murderbot fanart and #murderbot fanfic, respectively.
Posts that mention/include specific characters other than Murderbot are generally tagged with those characters' names; ART is usually tagged #asshole research transport and sometimes #perihelion.
Discussion about the books is sometimes tagged #murderbot meta, and is tagged with specific book titles when applicable.
Memes get tagged #murderbot memes. Memes/image edits original to this blog are also tagged #murderbot moodboard.
Posts from other blogs that aren't technically Murderbot posts, but could be about Murderbot or other characters, get reblogged with the tag #murderbot mood. I originally started this blog specifically so I could use this tag, lol. If you see any posts out in the wild that sound like a #murderbot mood, please feel free to tag this blog!
Recommendations of other good scifi (or otherwise relevant) books that I've been reading are tagged as #book recs.
Finally, through various events and because Murderbot is a very pro-therapy fandom, this blog has become a place where I post occasional updates about stuff I'm learning or progress I've made thanks to trauma therapy. I never include details about my trauma or much personal information at all, as my goal is to talk about the experience of healing in a way that's understandable and relatable without being triggering. If you'd like to read these posts or ignore them, I tag all of them as #personal and usually #trauma recovery.

Obv Three hasn't gone thru all of its character development yet, but the current fandom take on it is that Three is a sociable softie who loves nature and learning.
Which is very adorable, and as textually supported as anything can be. But I propose:
--Three canonically tries to get SecUnit to wear its armor by pointing at it for two minutes without saying a word
--SecUnit canonically pulls a lot of things it says directly from Sanctuary Moon, which it has watched thousands of hours of, and Three hasn't
--Three is into documentaries and nonfiction
--Three is used to working with other SecUnits
Thus,
Three rarely speaks, but when it does, it's basically *David Attenborough voice*. When Three and SecUnit are working together and SecUnit forgets to tell the humans what it's doing, Three (who hasn't said a word in the past six hours) suddenly says, "Your SecUnit is currently attempting a hack on nearby drones. This has a high probability of success, but there is always the chance that these drones have had their security features altered. ...and there, these drones are now under our control. Our path forward is clear, but we will continue to use caution," like it's narrating Blue Planet
#obsessed with this take not only bc I can see it happening but also because murderbot would HATE being narrated#every time Three does this Murderbot sends it a message it the feed that just says ‘knock that shit off’ and Three ignores it and they#do this every time forever. like a weird friendship ritual.#the murderbot diaries#tmbd
murderbot: SHUT THE FUCK UP WE ARE ON A MISSION
three: the humans need to know :) :)
ART, shoving a fully edited documentary with beautifully generated graphics behind its back: yeah, SecUnit, the humans need to know what's going on. It's of critical mission importance.
three, very quietly to the shared feed: Although it may seem stressed, a SecUnit having spare attention with which to swear at other SecUnits is actually an indicator of healthy processor usage---
Murderbot and Project Hail Mary (AO3 Category data comparison)
Thank you for liking and commenting on my impromptu data post on how Murderbot is a more gen-fic centred fandom compared to other book-turned-into-tv/film fandoms!
Several people pointed out that the large portion of M/M in the PHM fanworks must be attributable to crossover fictions, in particular with Iron Lung.
@rajamitsu suggested that category proportion might get more similar to murderbot if we removed crossovers. So, I decided to try just that.
I am now comparing:
Murderbot (before the TV adaptation came out)
Murderbot (current, but without any crossovers)
Murderbot (all the data to date)
PHM (before the film came out)
PHM (current, but without any crossovers)
PHM (all the data to date)
And here is the raw data
The most amaze-amaze-amaze thing is that 98% of all the PHM fanworks came out after the film - which was only 4 months ago (premiered on 9 March 2026)!
Indeed, prior to the adaptation, 67% of all the works in the PHM fandom was "General" - meaning, no shipping centred which was comparable to the Murderbot fandom.
Focusing on shipping categories, the highest shipping category for Murderbot Diaries is "Other". This is not surprising considering that the protagonist Murderbot has no gender, and even though Murderbot expresses disinterest (as in actively NOT interested in sex or romance), people often use '/' tag for special flavours of platonic (e.g., QPR) when writing stories focusing on relationships between Murderbot and other characters.
In the Other category, the most popular ship is "ART/Murderbot" (488 works), followed by "Dr. Gurathin/Murderbot (433 works)".
In PHM, the highest shipping tag excluding crossover is F/M, followed by M/M. In the F/M tag, the most popular pairing is Grace/Stratt (754 works). But what really surprised me was the second most popular one: Ryland Grace/Reader (504 works)!
In the M/M category, the highest one was Grace/Rocky (586 works).
Needless to say (?), if I include crossovers, the most popular pairing in PHM is "Simon (Iron Lung)/Ryland Grace" (2793 works). (why...) This is much higher than Grace/Rocky (669 works).
If we ignore shipping, the most popular relationship tag (without excluding anything) is "ART & Murderbot" (1525 works) followed by "Dr. Mensah & Murderbot" (635 works) in the Murderbot Diaries. In PHM, it's "Grace & Rocky" (4865 works), followed by "Simon/Grace" (2999 works) and "Adrian/Rocky" (1649 works).
Conclusion:
Murderbot is still a very Gen focused fandom.
Project Hail May got rapidly de-gen-centred since the film came out, and the large portion of shipping works are crossover fics, particularly with Iron Lung as rightly pointed out by many!

On people who find out how to enter alternate universes and then go on exploration trips without basic equipment and knowledge:
"In Joshua's opinion, if you wanted to extend the biblical metaphor, then this apocalypse had four horsemen of its own, their names being Greed, Failing to Follow the Rules, Confusion and Miscellaneous Abrasions. Joshua had got sick of having to save the Saved."

Sci-fi fans, Humble Bundle has a bundle of John Scalzi's books available now, where you can pay at least $18 for 22 books, with extra proceeds going to the charity World Central Kitchen. I've greatly enjoyed the humorous 'Starter Villain' and the epic The Interdependency trilogy (as well as the not-included latest book in the Old Man's War series 'The Shattering Peace'), and I can highly recommend Scalzi's writing.
