Pinned post time! (Not to be confused with "Pin-Lee post time," which we love but which is sadly not this post.)
Heyo! Welcome to Murderbot Moodboard, a blog for celebrating The Murderbot Diaries and the Murderbot TV show by sharing quotes, fanart/fanfic, memes, screencaps, meta discussions, and basically any post which sounds like it could be about Murderbot and friends clients/mutual administrative assistants.
All fandom posts will be tagged #murderbot for easy searching. Posts about the books will be tagged #the murderbot diaries, posts about the show will be tagged #murderbot tv, and both tags will be included only on posts where both apply. Posts that have been scheduled using the Tumblr queue function are tagged #sanqueueary moon.
This blog tries to make its posts as accessible as possible. All images I post include an image description in the alt text (and if I forget, feel free to remind me!). Did I tag your post as #cw eyestrain? I promise that's not an insult to your art; please read this Tumblr post about tagging images for the safety of people with seizures and migraines.
This blog is enthusiastically supportive of the TV show and its cast. Posts about new TV episodes will also be tagged #murderbot spoilers through the Saturday or Sunday after the episode drops on Apple TV+. Posts about the books will only receive spoiler tags if the book was published within the past month, so if you're new to the books and want to avoid spoilers, I'd suggest filtering #the murderbot diaries. Other commonly used tags are discussed in more detail at the bottom of this post (below the cut).
This blog is positive towards both canon and non-canon ships and commonly reblogs some shipping-related posts. Fandom is where we play around with canon for fun (see this Tumblr post)! (I am strongly against the harassment of other fans for their fanworks or headcanons; to quote this Tumblr post by allthingswhumpyandangsty, we should not "[value] the nonexistent lives of fictional characters more than real living, breathing people." Or to quote this Tumblr post by scottstilesliam, "No ship, or any aspect of a fictional universe, is important enough to treat another real life human being badly." Also, it's okay to be sex-repulsed and dislike ship fics, but there's nothing wrong with people who write ship fics, especially when they're properly tagged. Ship and let ship, folks! Murderbot/Gurathin posts are tagged #murderathin; Murderbot/Mensah posts are tagged #mensahbot; Murderbot/ART posts are tagged #murderhelion and/or #mutual administrative assistants.
BTW my main is @notcruvusmemes, so if you see me interacting with your posts from that blog, it's the same person. :) Also if I reblog a post here that's clearly off-topic it was probably meant for my main. (This happens now and then, for I am very human.)

Blog tagging system
In the past, my go-to fandom tag for this blog was #the murderbot diaries, and I didn't often tag things as just #murderbot. Since we started seeing content for the Apple TV+ show, I decided to change my tagging system to follow what I said above regarding #murderbot, #the murderbot diaries, and #murderbot tv. Posts about the TV show prior to a few months ago may be tagged #murderbot show.
I only tag posts with #martha wells when they are specifically about her, such as links to her interviews, screenshots of her social media posts, or posts that specifically discuss her writing style/choices (Doyleist instead of Watsonian perspective).
Quotes from the books are tagged #murderbot quotes.
Fanart and fanfic are usually tagged #murderbot fanart and #murderbot fanfic, respectively.
Posts that mention/include specific characters other than Murderbot are generally tagged with those characters' names; ART is usually tagged #asshole research transport and sometimes #perihelion.
Discussion about the books is sometimes tagged #murderbot meta, and is tagged with specific book titles when applicable.
Memes get tagged #murderbot memes. Memes/image edits original to this blog are also tagged #murderbot moodboard.
Posts from other blogs that aren't technically Murderbot posts, but could be about Murderbot or other characters, get reblogged with the tag #murderbot mood. I originally started this blog specifically so I could use this tag, lol. If you see any posts out in the wild that sound like a #murderbot mood, please feel free to tag this blog!
Recommendations of other good scifi (or otherwise relevant) books that I've been reading are tagged as #book recs.
Finally, through various events and because Murderbot is a very pro-therapy fandom, this blog has become a place where I post occasional updates about stuff I'm learning or progress I've made thanks to trauma therapy. I never include details about my trauma or much personal information at all, as my goal is to talk about the experience of healing in a way that's understandable and relatable without being triggering. If you'd like to read these posts or ignore them, I tag all of them as #personal and usually #trauma recovery.

Water-cooler talk with the sapient spaceship that had kidnapped him and half his research group. That was his life now. It was a better life than dying in a slowly-freezing safepod, so Pranjal wasn’t going to complain.

A Case Study On Mutualistic Relationships by CompletelyDifferent (AO3)
The Murderbot Diaries – Teen
#Canon Compliant #Canon-Typical Violence #Network Effect from Ratthi's POV #Ableism
Dr. Pranjal Ratthi has written papers on mutualism, symbiotic relationships where all species involved benefit from their interactions. It turns out that applying theory into practice with human-AI dynamics is a little more complicated than he might have anticipated. But worth it, in the end.
I hadn't read a lot of scifi until after I read The Murderbot Diaries (which kind of introduced me to the contemporary scifi lit scene), but I'm currently rereading what was my favorite scifi book before I read Murderbot, and it's still in my top 10. It's a standalone novel that came out in 1988 called Hellspark, written by Janet Kagan. Martha Wells has said in one or two places that Janet Kagan is one of her scifi inspirations (and has mentioned one of Kagan's other novels, Mirabile, specifically), but I wouldn't be surprised if Wells drew some inspiration from Hellspark as well, because I was reminded of it when I read certain parts of TMBD.
Hellspark features a main character named Tocohl who is confident, pragmatic, and within the first few pages of Chapter 1 uses her fighting skills and responsive armor suit skin to take down a group of bad guys armed with knives who are kidnapping a woman who turns out to be an important character in the story. Tocohl is assisted by her extrapolative computer Maggie, who lives in Tocohl's ship but uses a remote to interact with characters on planet part of the time. Tocohl usually speaks to Maggie by subvocalizing—this book was where I first heard that term, though I didn't quite understand what it meant until I read TMBD.
The main story takes place on a planet where a survey team has gone to assess if one of the life forms there, the sprookjes, are sapient, because that will determine whether the planet can be developed by outside forces or not. But there's been a mysterious death, the planet is prone to frequent lightning storms, and the survey team are all humans from different planets, leading to cultural and language differences that add to the tension. Tocohl, however, is from a culture of traveling merchants, and she uses her understanding of the languages and the nonverbal movements of the different cultures to work through the group's communication challenges as she helps them try to determine if the sprookjes are sapient before their time runs out.
I absolutely love the cultural worldbuilding behind each of the fictional human cultures that is evident from page 1. The way Janet Kagan emphasizes the body language and movements of each culture isn't quite like anything else I've ever read outside of the class I once took on intercultural communication. If you're looking for a scifi story with a bit of mystery, intercultural dynamics, and analysis of the timeless question "how do you define, much less determine, sapience?," I'm fairly confident you will not regret picking up this book. :)
I don't know exactly why this post is gaining traction just now but it's making me happy. A couple weeks from now is the anniversary of when my best friend died, and Hellspark was a book he introduced me to (he was a writer and a big fan of Janet Kagan's work, especially her book Uhura's Song, and they corresponded by email for a few years before Janet passed away). So I'm glad that I can pass on the love for Hellspark and Janet Kagan's work that I got from my friend to other people — I think he would like that.

I wonder if there are tmbd fics that really delve into the idea of Murderbot being property
I mean the books deal with it plenty but whenever its legal status in the corporation rim gets brought up it makes me want to see a fic where MB with all of its established personhood gets confronted with the fact that it legally has an owner
No threat to its or its humans continued existence to focus on, no friend nearby to vouch for its sapience, just... being treated like a thing again. Having to wait it out while the reality of the situation sinks in

crazy how murderbot was like let me poke around in this cunt's head i bet there's so much hateful disgusting shit in here. and all it found was unrequited love and sadness. and then gurathin was like was like wow okay two can play at that game and discovered unexplained mass murder.
My controversial opinion is that book!Gurathin was right, but tv!Gurathin and tv!Murderbot were both wrong but we love them anyway. When you mentally connect two paranoid people traumatized by the surveillance state, of course they're going to do some unethical mindreading. And then later, after they both undergo some character growth, one of them will carry the other's memories in his head for reimplantation. It's a beautiful story arc. Now we just need to find out what the deal is with the unexplained mass murder 👀
