I found the room in the facility easily enough. It was one of many. Identical little cells with a bed pushed against one wall and hygiene equipment against the other.

There was no one else being held here. I made sure. Leaving some poor fuck here to die of starvation or run out of power was not something I intended to do. It could hold maybe twenty-five in total, but it honestly looked like it was on its way to being decommissioned.

That was probably why they'd stashed Gurathin here. They didn't think that Preservation Alliance would even know where to look.

Luckily, Preservation Alliance had me.

The hack codes aren't working, Gura, Dr. Mensah said calmly on our shared feed. Much more calmly than I would be if I had Gurathin micromanaging me wrong while I (that is, Mensah) was stuck in the only control room that could access StationSys when the other two of us were several levels away.

The codes are out of date, I said to both of them. But you don't need them. You just need to ask it using correct protocols. Tell it to open up the doors on our level, but kinda make it sound like it's HubSys's idea.

What??!! Gurathin said on our private feed. Then in the open channel, Okay, Ayda, try these. It's another of my old batches. I'm sending them now. 

Those won't work, I said. They're going to be outdated just like the others. Dr. Mensah, you don't need any codes for this. You need to talk to it like a bot does. But for this type of  system, it wants some interaction beforehand. An ordinary handshake will make it think you're a regular bot giving it a routine instruction. Do a system handshake, then an all clear, and if you get a comebacknow, send it a "good job," then tell it what you need. The exact protocols are different for every system, but you can easily find which one it's using in the system documentation, and the codes are in there too.

I became aware that Gurathin was looking at me. On our private feed, he said, I thought you were some kind of master hacker, but you actually just use small talk to get station bots to do what you want? Really?

Shut up.

Where do I look, SecUnit? Dr. Mensah asked me.

Of course she was trying my much better idea. Gurathin was the one who answered before I could figure out exactly where a human with an interface rather than augments would go for that data. Ayda, there's a directory at the top level with an ID that should be two letters and a number. Do you see something like that?

Yes, great. That's good, they're using the QuanLumen set, which is very common. I'm sending it to you, so just pick the ones SecUnit tells you to use, and see what that does.

I gave him a neutral expression while I told her which ones to use. He did something annoying with his eyebrows and went back to his efforts to open the doors using his hardwire, while I continued to use my superior strength to keep the collapsed ceiling from falling on us completely.

She'll get it before you do.
