i always find varric’s perspective on anders post-kirkwall very interesting in the sense that like, yes varric does not like him. he rightfully resents him but he still feels his guilt, and how he presents the chantry explosion as his own personal failure.

we see this most prominently with solas in veilguard (“he needs someone to show him a better option” always struck out to me) but something i don’t see people talk about a lot when it comes to varric and his guilt is after his quest with bianca during inquisition. varric makes a point that, if he hadn’t been scouted (kidnapped ehem ehem) by cassandra he would be in kirkwall still, pretending nothing was happening. he says he doesn’t deal with things. that he ignores them and tears into himself about, the inquisitor helps but doesn’t take away the sting.

varric isn’t and wasn’t responsible for anders, he isn’t to blame for what happened but varric thinks he was. he watched anders spiral and mostly didn’t intervene. he knew something was especially wrong when anders tried to give away a deeply personal and important item to him out of the blue and reacted in the best way he could. by not dealing with it and attempting to move on. him and anders were close once, varric “””totally””” should’ve seen the signs that something was wrong and therefore he is responsible and should’ve done better, that’s his thought process and he sticks with so intensely that it translated into him doing everything he could to try and talk solas down. even if it didn’t work, it would be a better effort.

gonna add another tidbit to this but the fact that we seen in da2 the scene of anders giving varric his mother’s pillow means he told this to cassandra. it seems like such a minuscule thing for him to include but with the previous behavior in mind it makes you wonder how varric presented that memory to her.

then someone gets brave and makes a character who is a real bastard and makes all the wrong choices and is maybe even malicious at times and they make this character explicitly queer. and then fans are like "this is what you think of us?? worst representation ever" and the creator gets absolutely lambasted, ESPECIALLY if theyre queer themselves

I'm sad to say that the rise of fascism has been visible in my inbox for years as people become increasingly distrustful of their own bodies and pleasure. you see it in people's paranoia around becoming "porn addicts," their need for reassurance that a 24 year old isn't a predator for dating a 22 year old, their fears that they may have unwittingly committed assault by looking at another child's naked body when they were young, their insistence that consensual sex is impossible for anyone who has had a single drink or smoked a whiff of weed. people, especially young people, are doing a tremendous amount of work for fascism in terms of rigorously policing their own bodies and sexual expression, and they often don't even realize it.
