They’re also shooting for 100% renewable plastic sources by 2030! All of the soft plant/leaf elements in sets right now and going forward are made out of bioplastic made from sugarcane, and they’re working on getting the regular hard plastic bricks out of that, too.
They’ve done it, actually! The full bricks are in the prototype stage now, and are expected to be 100% biodegradable without the need for a commercial compost facility. It’s very cool. Right now they’re testing the durability and playability of the bricks and seeing what needs to be revised/reworked on their final model.
So its that easy huh
Of course it is
Actually, this isn’t “easy” and is huge news. You see, Lego is absolutely meticulous about their quality control. Their standards for manufacturing are stupidly high, as are their safety requirements. You know that distinctive “click” when you pop two Lego bricks apart? They engineered that. That sound is so distinctive that it can be used to tell genuine Lego bricks from counterfeits and it’s a sound that would be based on shape and material.
Furthermore, one of the hard requirements for a Lego brick is that it must be compatible with any other Lego brick. If I buy a set today and pull a set from the 1980s? Those bricks would fit together perfectly. This requires a huge amount of precision engineering and controls on manufacturing quality. (I can’t remember the source, but I’ve at least heard that once the brick molds wear to a certain point, they’re pulled from the line and either melted down or turned into construction material for Lego HQ. Point being, no one is getting their hands on a worn Lego mold)
Recycled and non-petroleum plastics are different from other plastic. The chemistry is different. The timing and process to use them is different. This has been a reason why more companies haven’t moved to them, because there’s a drop in quality for material (so they claim).
What Lego just did is completely obliterate that argument. The corporation with some of the strictest quality control requirements for plastic just kicked the basic foundation of the “bad quality” argument out from under it, because if they feel confident enough to guarantee the same experience as using a brick from over 40 years ago, if they are confident enough that they can meet their own metrics at a huge industrial scale….
Nobody else has any excuse.
GLORIOUS NERDERY Lego edition
INCREDIBLY based
I know I’ve reblogged this before, but it’s been a while and this is still very important.
Fucking crazy happy to hear about this. I used to work at LEGO and I remember them giving us the news thing about the Greenpeace collab (and yes GP is iffy sometimes but they did help make this possible, the plant-based bricks). We also received an exclusive LEGO set for Christmas to celebrate the year that they completed the offshore wind farm that produces 100% of Denmark’s LEGO factory power. I still have it.
That’s a model of the ocean windmill and the weird little boat they used to construct it. It really moves up and down on the legs and if I put the windmill in front of a window, it turns really well.
I'm fucking weeping rn

Y'ALL THIS IS THE NEW WHITE HOUSE MONKEYPOX COORDINATOR HOLY SHIT
Biden really said "I think we need a raging queer leather daddy doctor to run the country's monkeypox response" and he was RIGHT
yeah this is based
Oh fuck that is a good call: that's a gentleman whose career started while AIDS was in full swing within his community, who has championed harm reduction approaches to infectious disease, and who is pointed in his insistence on destigmatizing high risk communities rather than setting himself apart from them. This is someone who understands harm reduction and meeting people where they are without judgement, which is precisely the attitude you want to have when you grapple with a stigmatized epidemic.
Here's an article about his appointment to director of HIV/AIDS prevention from February 2021. Look at his career: he's been working in HIV/AIDS nearly his entire adult life and career. He's been working on increasing public health within stigmatized populations by focusing on harm reduction that entire time. Hell, this is someone with the institutional memory to remember Anthony Fauci's piss poor treatment of HIV during the Reagan administration and carry a grudge because the man didn't go far enough.
By the way, this is absolutely an example of harm reduction in terms of exercising your right to vote: there is zero chance that an advocate like Daskalakis would have been appointed under a Trump administration, but the incoming Biden administration installed him in the previous director position (which he still holds, as he adds monkeypox to his case load) as early as late 2020, before Biden was even properly inaugurated. That doesn't mean this administration is perfect or that we can't continue to agitate for better change, but it does mean that things are better and fewer people are going to die. That's basic harm reduction in action: you focus on survival for the most people as your metric, you take the route that results in the best outcome for the situation you have, and you do not ever let the imaginary perfect become the enemy of the tangible better.
Fuck, this is delightful good news. Well done Dr. Daskalakis, and all the best of luck to you and yours!
Beware!
Avoid sci-hub too👀

As much as I want to support ethical farming practices I will be buying the cheapest bag of frozen chicken thighs as much as the next frugal/poor person which is why animal welfare needs to be legislated, not left up to the invisible hand of the free market or some bullshit. Invisible hand of the free market finds itself around a lot of throats.
it's kinda funny that articles are like "walk to work, only take a cold 30 second shower, eat leaves straight from your yard, separate your neighbourhood's trash by hand and don't even THINK about driving a car to get an iced coffee that comes with a plastic straw you piece of shit" and then you see another article that's like "30 celebs travelling by private jet in style"

I hate that as Indigenous people, we have to slowly explain the concept of LandBack to basically every colonizer.
Like no we're not going to just throw you out, or put you in camps, or any of that shit. We just want to be able to take care of our ancestral land and be the ones in charge of protecting it.
Like I know these people were raised with a colonial mindset but after a while I just start to lose sympathy.
Like oh you're worried about having your home violently ripped out from under you?? What a fucking tragedy.
I wasn't gonna add to this, but like, no, I wanna add to this.
What will change for you, Whitey McWhiterson, if LandBack takes place?
Not a whole fucking lot.
You might be incentivized to switch to less-polluting modes of transportation, such as biking. Gas might be discouraged.
The environment might be prioritized.
You might become a citizen of, say, Mi'kma'ki instead of the USA.
Your kids might be taught an Indigenous language in schools.
History class would be a lot more up front.
But your day to day life? Very little will change. You're not gonna be kicked out if your house. You're not gonna be rounded up and put into a camp. You might be required to have the minimum basic decency towards the environment. It will be the Sovreign Peoples running the show.
But you, Joe Shmoe, will be left alone to live your life.
Which is more than we can say your people did for us.
Even if I was to look at it in a completely self centered way and set aside all the numerous correct moral arguments for Land Back: as a settler who isn't rich or powerful, what do we even have to lose? I don't own anything! I don't own land or a house, am I really going to get bent out of shape about trying to get the land back to its people —who, btw, stewarded it a thousand times better than the ghouls in charge now? Like I already have nothing under the current system, why wouldn't I fight for a better world when it's not like I have a stake in this one? If you, as a white prole, are worried about Land Back, it's entirely the white supremacy talking, much like people who defend capitalism without owning capital.
Officials first planted flowers along the roadside during the pandemic to help improve biodiversity, but soon they found another use.
Wildflower meadows are beautiful; so beautiful in fact that a village in Britain has found they act as natural speed traps from motorists slowing down to look at them.
The village of Long Newnton in Gloucestershire has a problem with fast moving through-traffic between nearby towns. Almost all drivers moving through areas they frequent will break posted speed limits, and neither a 30 mile per hour limit, nor warning signs made any difference.
Officials first planted flowers along the roadside during the pandemic to help improve biodiversity.
But they noticed that as well as attracting more wildlife, motorists also slowed down when they passed the flowers.
Liberalism is a center to center-right ideology invested in the maintenance of capitalism. It seeks to make capitalism more equitable at best and actively fosters market solutions everywhere (neoliberalism) at worst. Most of the world recognizes this and it's largely only in the United States and a few other choice places that the illusion of "Liberal/Democrat = leftist" is rampant. On a whole host of issues, liberals and conservatives (and by extension Democrats and Republicans) have more in common with each other than Democrats have in common with leftists and socialists. The former two are both fundamentally capitalist, imperialist, extractivist, and managed by the richest of the rich. Fierce debate is encouraged over the issues they do disagree on, certainly, but all that fire and noise distracts us from the fact that both ideologies and parties ultimately want very little to change about the unequal, unjust status quo. We need an ecosocialist alternative sooner rather than later, a path that represents the actual left.
I think i will leave this here
Gettin real tired of this idea that by critiquing liberalism and Democrats, and by saying we need a more qualitatively leftist transformation of society that goes beyond the status quo, that we're saying "don't vote". Yes, vote, get Trump and Republicans out of office. I 100% support this. But that doesn't mean it should be our end goal. The above meme wants you to just put up with whatever Democrats represent, regardless of how neoliberal and imperialist they are. Yes, reform comes before revolution, but Democrats so very rarely even scrape the threshold of reform. Sure, vote for them in opposition to conservatives, but recognize their limitations and explore ideas beyond them.
Nothing I’ve read has changed me more than “you do people a favor by accepting their help” like I repeat this constantly to so many people because it’s true!!! People like to feel useful, they like to feel kind, they like to feel like they have an ability to impact people’s lives so just let them!! Not everything is a thing to be owed back — accept people’s kindness without making a competition out of it
the new counterculture needs to be anything that involves zero makeup and curation. the revolution will not be ‘content creator’-able.
im 100% serious. aliexpress fishnets and tiktok tutorial eyeliner is not punk. wearing a tshirt from 5 years ago with a simple, functional hairstyle is punk. in the age of aestheticisation rebellion cannot have an appearance because every ‘look’ is infected by capitalism. wear what you have. women, ask yourselves ‘would a man do this to their appearance in the same circumstances’ and if not, don’t do it. concealer exists to cause you mental anguish. ‘-core’ exists to cause your wallets to empty. refuse culture of perfection and accept the messiness and asymmetry of a human body. if your first thought is “but i will look ugly” ask yourself why you think an unmodified human body is ugly. secondly ask yourself why you are so afraid of that. reject the veneer, reject the facade. become un-commodifiable. the revolution will not be marketed

Optimism is a political act.
Alex Steffen
Entrenched interests use despair, confusion and apathy to prevent change. They encourage modes of thinking which lead us to believe that problems are insolvable, that nothing we do can matter, that the issue is too complex to present even the opportunity for change. It is a long-standing political art to sow the seeds of mistrust between those you would rule over: as Machiavelli said, tyrants do not care if they are hated, so long as those under them do not love one another. Cynicism is often seen as a rebellious attitude in Western popular culture, but, in reality, cynicism in average people is the attitude exactly most likely to conform to the desires of the powerful – cynicism is obedience.
Optimism, by contrast, especially optimism which is neither foolish nor silent, can be revolutionary. Where no one believes in a better future, despair is a logical choice, and people in despair almost never change anything. Where no one believes a better solution is possible, those benefiting from the continuation of a problem are safe. Where no one believes in the possibility of action, apathy becomes an insurmountable obstacle to reform. But introduce intelligent reasons for believing that action is possible, that better solutions are available, and that a better future can be built, and you unleash the power of people to act out of their highest principles. Shared belief in a better future is the strongest glue there is: it creates the opportunity for us to love one another, and love is an explosive force in politics.
Great movements for social change always begin with statements of great optimism.
This counts as a spell
