The case for a three-day weekend is clear – let’s start planning now
As Trump faces down North Korea, it’s alarming to think that most of the world’s nuclear warheads are now in the hands of men who are prepared to use them.
Brexit fight
Brexit is upon us. The UK has just triggered Article 50, starting a process that threatens our environment and puts those struggling most in our broken economy at greater risk.
Leaving the EU has been presented as a way of taking back control. But we know that Brexit can’t deliver. It will only make our crisis of control worse.
From rampant inflation to potentially disastrous tariffs, from the abolition of labour market protections to the erosion of environmental standards, we have every reason to be anxious.
And our research shows that it is those with least control over their lives who are most fearful.
We know that people need real change, not the false solutions offered by Brexit. And we are determined to pursue our agenda for a new economy that means people really take control.
But to do that, we have to fight tooth and nail to prevent Brexit from making things even worse for those struggling at the sharp end of a broken economy.
We must:
- Push for an open and inclusive economy: we need a new economy that works for everyone. That includes celebrating the huge contribution of Britain’s migrants and working with groups on the ground to overcome divisions in affected communities.
- Protect future generations: no legacy is more important than the world in which we live. We have a proud track record of bold environmental campaigning – and Brexit means we will need to forge even closer ties with allies across communities, businesses and industries.
- Fight to preserve our rights and protections: we must resist any efforts to unpick decades of important legislation that give us protection at home and at work. We want a high standards UK, not a secretive tax haven.
This is the fight of a lifetime. People did not vote for higher food prices, more air pollution or cruel conditions for farm animals. It is time we took a stand, together.

Our food system under review
The dominant paradigm in which success is understood is outdated and flawed. Our food system is defective, because the way we understand it is defective. We need to address this so that we can manage our food system to support the greatest contribution to human wellbeing, in a way that is socially just and sustainable over time.

Over the next months and years we will be called upon to intensify our demands for social justice to become more militant in our defense of vulnerable populations. Those who still defend the supremacy of white male hetero-patriarchy had better watch out. The next 1,459 days of the Trump administration will be 1,459 days of resistance: Resistance on the ground, resistance in the classrooms, resistance on the job, resistance in our art and in our music.

The Noam Chomsky Website.
Written amid rising opposition to the Vietnam War, Chomsky's greatest essay has added resonance in the age of Trump.
There are determining events, especially when we’re young and formulating our sense of the world: Times when we learn how to take ourselves, where to stand, how to move forward in a fresh way. For me, a key moment was stepping into the periodicals room of my college library in late February of 1967 — I was a sophomore — and reading an article in the New York Review of Books that caught my eye. It was “The Responsibility of Intellectuals,” written by Noam Chomsky.
Nothing was quite the same for me after reading that piece, which I’ve reread periodically throughout my life, finding things to challenge me each time. I always finish the essay feeling reawakened, aware that I’ve not done enough to make the world a better place by using whatever gifts I may have. Chomsky spurs me to more intense reading and thinking, driving me into action, which might take the form of writing an op-ed piece, joining a march or protest, sending money to a special cause, or just committing myself to further study a political issue.

Our atomised communities can heal themselves. Through local initiatives we can regenerate our culture and make politics relevant again
Trump and Brexit are responses to a political system that’s imploding. But could a radical redesign wrest it from the liars?

Financial meltdown, environmental disaster and even the rise of Donald Trump – neoliberalism has played its part in them all. Why has the left failed to come up with an alternative?
