i’m watching the backrooms movie on a sketchy website and it took me a full 45 minutes to realise that the grainy audio and footage and occasional soft laughter and the shadows of people moving in the foreground every so often was not a stylistic choice by the director and is in fact because someone ripped the whole thing directly from their cinema.
i was genuinely sitting there thinking “holy shit this is such a unique creative decision i think it’s so awesome that the director prioritised cinema goers by referencing the theatre itself in the movie in order to confuse people and emphasise the weirdness of liminal spaces” until it dawned on me that having a watermark across the screen the entire time probably wasn’t a conscious choice by kane parsons.
i do still believe i’m watching the ideal version though because there’s something about watching found footage of the backrooms and a random shadow of a man appears on screen only to disappear a moment later and quiet nonsensical voices coming from somewhere inside your headphones and camera work that always looks like it was filmed on a camcorder that really works for this movie and I’m devastated to find out that this isn’t Normal.
(It is weird that this is the only movie I’ve ever watched on this site that has been a direct rip though like… of all the movies to have strange, altered footage….)
