A Japanese transmasc rapper named Cocona has become a Brand Ambassador for Gucci. GUCCI!!!! And he’s in Milan Primavera, a really important and fancy fashion show, strutting around with a buzz cut and all his piercings and visible top surgery scars and I’m like genuinely so emotional about this I need all of you to see this!!!!!!! 🥹🥹🥹
He has been out for about 2 months, and in the time since his bandmates (as he is part of a musical group) have been nothing but extremely loving and supportive towards him, even rebranding from “Xtraordinary Girls” to “Xtraordinary Genes” as a way to support him :D
They now refer to him as their little brother and pet his buzz cut like a cat :]
I hope this can serve as proof to any trans people who may see this that there will always, ALWAYS be people out there who see you as you are and love you for it! It just takes a little time.

so a very long time ago, my dad worked with an arson investigator
this guy was often one of the first people on the scene following a suspected arson, once emergency services had done what they needed to do. at times, there were also civilians on the periphery. often, they were freaking out, and understandably so; their home or workplace had just, quite literally, gone up in smoke
this investigator wouldn’t try to calm them down. he wouldn’t comfort them or be a shoulder to cry on.
instead, he’d walk up to the person most visibly losing their shit, hand them a fire extinguisher, and say “hey, can you keep an eye out for any other fires, and if you see one, can you put it out with this?”
of course, there was no actual risk of another fire. he wouldn’t be on the scene investigating if there was even a chance that the fire wasn’t completely put out. but the bystander didn’t need to know that
because that person, without fail, would immediately pull it together, take the fire extinguisher, and stand guard. they were, at least temporarily, calm enough for this investigator to do this job
my dad has told me the parable of the fire extinguisher a hundred times, and i think about it a lot. i think about what it says about people and crises. i think about what it says about the grounding power of having a purpose. and i think about the importance of letting someone help me through something, even if that help is just going to be another casserole to throw into the freezer, because useless or not, that fire extinguisher might be the only thing holding them together
Every bit of emergency response training I've ever done has a part that's like "check the bystanders, and if anyone looks like they're about to lose it, give them something to monitor. Tell them to keep an eye out for the ambulance or to make sure everyone else is staying clear of the hazard or something."
When I was still doing direct care, I had to evacuate two group homes during the Lawrence Gas Explosions in 2018 (their house wasn’t actually destroyed, they were just in general the evacuation zone, not actually).
I saw right away that one of the guys was headed for a meltdown when he realized he wasn’t going to be able to sleep in his own bed that night. So I said to him he was in charge of helping me buy everyone underwear and toiletries and stuff. He calmed right down.
I had another client in the house they’d been moved to who did not handle disruptions in her routine well and when I saw she was stressed out and heading toward her own melting point, I put her in charge of tracking down a different guy’s comfort tv shows. Her housemate spent the afternoon baking with staff so everyone would have comfort food when they got there.
We got 20 people (10 from the evacuated houses and 10 from the ones they relocated to), some with behavioral issues, all with intellectual disabilities, through the night by giving them ways to take care of each other.
Oh Jacob you move me so much
My executives are so dysfunctional they might as well be Demulas siblings

Dorian Gray is queer art, period.
Apparently Netflix has decided to make an adaption of The Picture of Dorian Gray with Dorian and Basil as siblings. Unless they're planning to go the gothic horror incest route, they've completely missed the point of the relationship between these characters.
If you haven't read the book, Basil is a painter who becomes infatuated with a beautiful young man, pouring his feelings into a painting. Dorian becomes jealous of the painting's beauty, realizing that he will never be as young and unspoiled as the version of himself on the canvas. He finds himself wishing that the painting could age instead of him. His wish is granted, allowing him to stay young and beautiful until the end, with his moral and spiritual decline reflected only in the painting.
I cannot overstate how queer this book is. Dorian is so beautiful that their first meeting inspires a wave of existential terror in Basil. Dorian changes Basil's entire understanding of art and beauty. This book is so queer it was used as evidence at Wilde's sodomy trial.
The existence of the portrait itself is tantamount to a confession of queer desire. Basil tells his friend, Lord Henry, that he can't exhibit the painting because "I have put too much of myself into it.”
Lord Henry (who will later lead Dorian into a life of vice) laughs, but Basil explains:
“[E]very portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter. [...] It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it is rather the painter who, on the coloured canvas, reveals himself. The reason I will not exhibit this picture is that I am afraid that I have shown in it the secret of my own soul.”
This is how he describes meeting Dorian:
When our eyes met, I felt that I was growing pale. A curious sensation of terror came over me. I knew that I had come face to face with some one whose mere personality was so fascinating that, if I allowed it to do so, it would absorb my whole nature, my whole soul, my very art itself. [...] I have always been my own master; had at least always been so, till I met Dorian Gray. Then—but I don’t know how to explain it to you. Something seemed to tell me that I was on the verge of a terrible crisis in my life. I had a strange feeling that fate had in store for me exquisite joys and exquisite sorrows. I grew afraid and turned to quit the room. It was not conscience that made me do so: it was a sort of cowardice. I take no credit to myself for trying to escape.”
Notice that turn of phrase--it was not conscience but cowardice that made him attempt to flee. Why would conscience factor into his decision? Because he felt shame at his reaction to Dorian's perfect, beautiful face.
Lord Henry is shocked to discover Basil cares for something besides his art.
“He is all my art to me now,” said the painter gravely. “I sometimes think, Harry, that there are only two eras of any importance in the world’s history. The first is the appearance of a new medium for art, and the second is the appearance of a new personality for art also. What the invention of oil-painting was to the Venetians, the face of Antinous was to late Greek sculpture, and the face of Dorian Gray will some day be to me.
Basil goes on to confess, "I see everything in him. He is never more present in my work than when no image of him is there."
Lord Henry still doesn't understand why there is too much of Basil in the painting, so Basil explains:
“Because, without intending it, I have put into it some expression of all this curious artistic idolatry, of which, of course, I have never cared to speak to him. He knows nothing about it. He shall never know anything about it. But the world might guess it, and I will not bare my soul to their shallow prying eyes. My heart shall never be put under their microscope. There is too much of myself in the thing, Harry—too much of myself!”
Lord Henry asks how Dorian feels about Basil, and his response is absolutely tragic.
The painter considered for a few moments. “He likes me,” he answered after a pause; “I know he likes me. Of course I flatter him dreadfully. I find a strange pleasure in saying things to him that I know I shall be sorry for having said. As a rule, he is charming to me, and we sit in the studio and talk of a thousand things. Now and then, however, he is horribly thoughtless, and seems to take a real delight in giving me pain. Then I feel, Harry, that I have given away my whole soul to some one who treats it as if it were a flower to put in his coat, a bit of decoration to charm his vanity, an ornament for a summer’s day.”
Any adaptation that ignores the way Dorian's existence and beauty utterly destroyed Basil is doomed to be shallow and insipid. This is not just a book about a magic painting. It's a monument to queer longing.
For those who do not know, Antinous was the male lover of the emperor Hadrian, who was deified upon his death.
So Basil is comparing him to a man who was so beautiful that his lover worshiped him and built temples to him when he died.

good news!
Jane Friedman claims she had to fight against Amazon’s refusal to remove the misattributed titles because she had not trademarked her name
Friedman suspects [the removal of the books] is due to her speaking out about the issue on social media.
just another reminder that speaking out WORKS
It should also be a reminder just how little Amazon cares about anything. They refused to remove the books because they expected Friedman not to put up a big public fight. They refused to remove the books because they thought they could get away with it. They’ve decided letting very shitty AI books overrun their platform is profitable and they’re going to keep letting it happen.
It was never a good idea to shop at Amazon, but they’re now on a track that’s going to make their website absolutely unusable for finding actual books written by real people who know how to write enjoyable books.
What a new FUCK is this 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
Amazon is the one place I specifically refuse to sell my books. Most authors have no choice; their monetisation methods mean that they need to sell on Amazon (and put up with whatever bullshit Amazon wants) to make a living wage, because most readers have Amazon accounts and can't be bothered buying their books from a less horrible distributor. And the buyers don't bother to look elsewhere because everyone sells through Amazon, because most of them have to, because the buyers... yeah.
Anyway you won't find Derin Edala books on Amazon because I can afford to choose not to sell there. And I constantly get annoyed messages from people who don't want to have to take thirty seconds to make an account with another retailer. I encourage other authors who don't make their primary income through sales to do the same thing (because those who make their primary income through sales can't afford to), and readers to support your authors by buying their books somewhere fucking else.
@derinthescarletpescatarian
What alternatives are there? I'd love to know of alternatives to Amazon but I haven't even heard of any.
Here's a link to everywhere I sell, to start with. Other authors might have others to add.
For authors who don't know how to access other distributors, draft2digital.com is a retail distributor that gives you access to a global market, including places like Amazon, Kobo, Barnes and Noble, and many other international retailers. If you do opt to use Amazon, you're better off uploading directly through KDP because you'll get more royalties. (It's like a 5-10% difference iirc, which for me is about 20 cents. Which isn't much, but when some of your royalty checks are literally a penny, that 20 cents matters.)
They recently acquired Smashwords as well and are constantly expanding their global market and library distributors.
(If you want to see how many retailers you can reach with them, this is where you can get my books. I'm in over 20 global stores and need to actually update the listings to include more. Unfortunately, I can't afford to avoid Amazon because, as @derinthescarletpescatarian pointed out, it's really hard to get people to change their buying habits, and I like being able to afford food.)
It used to just be for ebooks, but they now do their own paperbacks that give you the same access as the Ingram Spark market and, unlike Ingram Spark, haven't completely trashed their customer service.
The only downside to avoiding Ingram is that it limits your market for hardbacks unless you're willing to use Amazon, though hopefully, D2D will start doing hardbacks soon. (There are a few other places, but they don't have the same market reach as Ingram, sadly. Yay... monopolies...)
They also partner with FindAwayVoices for audiobooks, which gives you access to a wide global market as well. Like D2D you can access Audible through Findaway, but like Kindle, you'll earn more if you upload directly to Audible.
So, yeah, you want and can afford to avoid Amazon as an author? Draft2digital is the place to go.
As a reader, check the links authors post.
Usually, you'll see Amazon listed, but a lot of us are really doing all we can to be available in as many stores as possible and would LOVE for you to use them.
Please. We're begging at this point.

FEMA is doing an emergency alert test on all TVs, radios, and cell phones on October 4, 2023, at approximately 2:20pm ET.
If you live in the US and you have a phone you need to keep secret for any reason, make sure that it is turned off at this time.
Yes, I'm doing this months in advance, and yes, my blog has very little reach, but I figure better to post about it more than less.
Please reblog and add better tags than mine, I'm bad at tags.
OCTOBER 4, 2023
TURN OFF YOUR OTHER PHONE AND DO NOT TURN IT ON AGAIN UNTIL YOU ARE ALONE AND SAFE BECAUSE THE ALARM WILL COME THROUGH AS SOON AS THAT PHONE IS POWERED ON.
AGAIN I REPEAT:
OCTOBER 4, 2023
THE ALARM WILL COME THROUGH AS SOON AS THAT PHONE IS POWERED BACK ON.
SO ONLY POWER IT BACK ON WHEN IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.

If this doesn't make sense, then good news it's not for or about you but still reblog it because you never know who may need to know this.
Reblog and add more tags.
