THE GOLDEN GIRLS 2.05 — Isn't It Romantic? — 08.11.86 Betty White as Rose Nylund Lois Nettleton as Jean
1986!!
Golden Girls was so incredibly progressive for its time and not even slightly afraid to be loud about it. They talked about queer people, about race, about ableism, and they made it central and overt. They talked about things that mattered, and they never punched down, and they were allies off the stage too.
Reblogging this again to add some context for anyone who may not know. In the 80's, being outed as gay could get you blacklisted in Hollywood. It ruined people's careers.
Bea Arthur and Betty White both suffered damage to their careers for standing up against racism and homophobia. Back in the 50s Betty White hosted a variety show that was canceled because she featured a black dancer and doubled down when they told her to stop.

how did a woman manage to date elvira for 19 years and not tell every single person she knows
sherlock holmes deduces you are trans before you've figured it out yourself and refers to you with those pronouns and then when you look confused is like "ah...had you not arrived at that conclusion yet?" and wafts away in his dressing gown to smoke seventeen pipes, leaving you in a gender crisis
Hercule Poirot deduces you are trans by accident because he suspected you of murder and broke into your house and searched your stuff then puts 2 and 2 together when Hastings makes an innocuous observation about your fashion sense or something and he jumps up and cries “mon dieu!!!” before striding over to you kissing you on both cheeks and saying “ah, cher ami, you must live as you choose!” and then running off to confront the real culprit while you stand there in befuddlement
Columbo deduces you're trans from context clues while he's talking to you about the area, immediately uses your preferred pronouns and starts telling you about his cousin, who's also transgender, and how they got this job doing security, and how they told him that a security guard always locks up, and asks you if the guard locked up last night, and isn't it weird the place was open? And you're like, well, someone else must have opened it up. Maybe the guy in charge? He has a spare key. And then he nods and goes "the guy in charge has a spare key... well, how about that?" And then he offers you a cigar and wanders off, and a day later your boss gets arrested for murder.
Fanon Batman deduces you are trans and suddenly a free hormone clinic opens up by your home a couple months later
Miss Fisher learns youre trans and simply gives you hormones, and a little cocaine as a treat. she also invites you out to a club to meet like minded individuals. at the club you watch as she seduces the bartender and then the next day the bartender is arrested for the murder.
being queer is such a fucking incredible experience like holy shit. I was reflecting on this for a while and I figured I'd give the newest members of the queer experience their flowers while I'm at it
the truth is "baby gays" (loosely quoting- I mean everyone) are some of the most underrated members of the lgbtqia+ community. instead of welcoming them with open arms, for a while online spaces were really toxic and hostile to them (2020 was obv a rough time for queer discourse AND being a closeted kid with mental health issues). so here's me outstretching my arm to the crowd, beyond harmful stereotypes and jokes made at their expense. because learning happens with open minds, and starts with acceptance.
to all the baby queers celebrating their first pride month: we want you here. I want you here. everything is likely so new to you right now, and with this comes curiosity and wonder and discomfort and massive numbers of unlearning.
I see you. I was there once. In fact this is my 6th year out and my identity is still changing and evolving as I move through different chapters in my life. Im still learning. and I want you to know even if it's been hard I would never change this about myself. I wouldn't change any part of how it (coming out for the first time) happened because it brought me here right now to this blog post.
It does get so much better. I know it's hard, being closeted for whatever reason at all cannot only be a dangerous secret for your safety but can also make you feel trapped in your own body and mind. this will pass. you will look like yourself one day and you will feel like yourself and you will love yourself one day. you are celebrated. not only by me but by so many others as well
I see all of you lovely people. I love you all. you are so brave and appreciated. If you needed one more reason to stay today then let this post be a sign.
I'm thinking of you, I know it will work out for all of you like it did me because you are strong enough to admit to yourself that things don't feel quite right the way the world is pushing them onto you. It takes a lot to give in to that and let it take you onto an entirely different path of life and I want you to know that that is acknowledged
be safe, know that someone out there loves you for who you are in your heart, and happy fucking pride. so many members of the queer community are fighting for your chance at a happy future right now as you read this. know that your existence is perfectly yours. it will all make sense in time.
-xoxo your cool queer internet cousin pepper ❤️
