Knowing how stuff works at the municipal level is a fucking curse because you can do your best to relay information to the community and they still assume the worst of you.
To the average person, it looks like we're just tearing up all the parks for development. But there were meetings and posts and announcements, and there was community input and awareness programs and we did our absolute best to keep everyone in the loop but some people still fell through the cracks.
So they think we're destroying all the parks.
"Why did parks and rec get rid of the fence at this park??? All parks should have fences!"
The fence was damaged and we thought it might be more convenient to open up the area so that people using the shelter didnt have to walk all the way around to get into the playground. The fence was damaged because people would climb it as a shortcut. (I personally disagree that all parks should have fences.)
"Why did they tear down the playground at Miller Park? It was perfectly fine- they wouldn't have to tear it all down if they bothered to maintenance it like they're supposed to."
Playgrounds are suggested to be replaced every ten years to keep up with accessibility updates. Likewise, it was decided that while we're updating the playground it would be a good opportunity to address the safety concerns brought to our attention in the past decade.
"THEYVE COMPLETELY TORN APART WILLOW RIDGE PARK! How dare they take away our precious few greenspaces and line their pockets with kickbacks from high density housing???"
-deep breath-
If you had bothered to go to any of the four public meetings, read the announcements, or looked at the giant sign in front of the park, you would notice that we are remodeling the park to include a wetland restoration area to address the flooding issues, which was voted on by the neighborhood it is adjacent to.
Yall are gonna feel real silly when these projects turn out to be massive improvements.
"Why doesnt our town have a community garden?"
Well the answer is very simple: we do.
Literally me everyone time someone says to me "i really wish i lived somewhere that has (community garden/arts center/public rec center/any nice community thing)" you do!!! Its right here!!! You just dont bother googling to look for it!!!
Part of this is the problem i run into every time as an event organizer, and that's-
How the FUCK do you reach the most people with your information?
Our little queer nonprofit does its best with a monthly newsletter, facebook, Instagram, meetup, physical posters, and our good old fashioned schmoozing. All that for about.... 500 people to show at pride, out of a city of 34k.
City management has 31k followers on facebook, a monthly magazine with a calendar of events that citizens get for free, open monthly meetings, an email list, and all the resources available to them and we STILL have people asking why we dont have amenities we already have.
I feel the city manager's pain.
I found both of these on Leonard Slatkin's facebook page. I think they really run the gamut of album cover artistic choices.
tfw you wake up to an AO3 comment notification, open the email to see that it's a very long comment, and then gradually realize that it's all about how your characterization is all wrong and you don't really get the source material
tfw you get jumpscared by blorbo from your renaissance art. This guy is not as into him as me (a high bar, to be fair)
Transcript of the above passage:
To distinguish the hands of Painters I esteeme difficult, not but that a continuall obseruation shrowd guesses may be giuen, as when one sees Nerues Muscles Veines and Bones too mutch appeare one is apt to Father it on Michaell Angelo, who knew too well anotomy, a bold and fierce looke yet the Painting soft on Raphael Vrbino; shepheards Joviallity and Heards to Hanniball Carachio, Battles and a well-made horse to Tempesta, shipping and Landshape worke to Albert Durer or some other Flemming yett these are suted nice and subtile points soe uncertaine as I would not haue our young Gentleman too confident in, least hee might like an Ill swimmer bee drowned because he went out of his debts and verifie the Italian Proverbe chi tutto abbraccia nulla strigne [sic].
This is from a late 17th-century English travel journal by a young gentleman whose name I didn't write down. Basically it's advice for people doing a grand tour. It cracks me up both because of his descriptions of the artists (it is also interesting who is included and who is not), and because it's so clearly aimed at not looking like a dope when seeing Italian paintings. The Italian proverb means "who embraces everything holds nothing" (the final word in the passage should be stringe).
I also like that he seems to have heard the expression "out of one's depths" but never seen it written out.

I feel like I'm getting better at writing secretary hand confidently, which is of course making it much less legible. More fun, though.
Tumblr users will say “Michelangelo didn’t know how to paint women and all his women look gross and like dudes lol” and proceed to post the most beautiful woman you’ve ever seen

IN VIOLENT TIMES
YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO SELL YOUR SOLE
I've already posted it on my twitter, but I wanted to post it here too since this is my favorite social media and I can yap more here.
I wanted to share a little fun fact I learned about a VERY famous painting: this man isn't really Jesus Christ; that's Tommaso Dei Cavalieri — Michelangelo's gay lover! The artist wanted to make his lover immortal and ig he succeeded on that! (kinda? I mean, not much people really know who Tommaso is, they just think that's Jesus so idk if that's a win or not.)
I don't really got to know how people started thinking he was Jesus Christ, but that's literally just Michelangelo's little boyfriend, and I find the way he used to draw and sculpt Tommaso very romantic!
I also wanted to say that I'm very upset that there's no tag to Tommaso so I'm creating one.
This is NOT Tommaso dei Cavalieri, this is a more modern design of Jesus. The idea that Michelangelo or Leonardo da Vinci codified people’s idea of Jesus with art of their boyfriends keeps getting circulated and it’s not true (Leonardo DID paint his boyfriend as John the Baptist though!).
However, and I think this is where that misconception comes from, there IS speculation that Michelangelo modeled Christ in The Last Judgement after Tommaso!
The sad fact is we actually DON’T have any art that’s confirmed to be Tommaso. @shredsandpatches and I have been talking about why that might be lately. It’s so heartbreaking that we don’t know what Michelangelo’s boyfriend looked like, especially since M describes him as so beautiful and perfect (though going by Michelangelo’s interests, I think we can extrapolate that Tommaso had the greatest butt of the Renaissance).
One sculpture that might also be inspired by Tommaso is the Genius of Victory:
Which shows a gorgeous young man with his knee pressing down on a kneeling bearded old captive. The captive looks a little like a certain sculptor.
(This actually juxtaposes well with a sonnet Michelangelo wrote to Tommaso about wanting to be his captive, naked and bound.)
I don’t know where the assumption that “people started thinking he was Jesus Christ” comes from re that picture, it’s obviously a religious image of Christ because he has the attribute of the Sacred Heart (also it looks nothing like Michelangelo’s style, I don’t know where this particular image comes from but I know it’s a post-Renaissance design).
But yeah Tommaso deserves ALL THE LOVE and he’s so obscure. When Michelangelo’s poetry was first published (by M’s grand nephew) the pronouns in the ones addressed to Tommaso were changed to female and it wasn’t until the 19th century they were restored. Sadly Michelangelo would have preferred this because as a gay Renaissance era Catholic he was deeply conflicted about his love of men and how the Church taught that was wrong. I just want to hug him and tell him God gave him his love of men and there are churches now that are affirming.
But I’m so happy what we have about Michelangelo’s love for Tommaso has survived. Tommaso remained by his side until Michelangelo died, literally, he was at his bedside. THEY LOVED EACH OTHER SO MUCH.
Also. Adorable fact. Michelangelo called Tommaso Tommao, the nickname for Tommaso, and Tommao signed his letters back to M as that.

Really enjoyed Sweeney Todd and also was pleased to discover the fun fact that the modern barber chair was actually invented in St. Louis. In this production Sweeney had ordered his chair from Koken Barbers' Supply (St. Louis, USA), and that was a specific enough local reference that I figured it had to be a real company, and indeed it was. If you were a 19th-century barber looking for a murder chair and had a lot of cannibalism money to spend, you probably really would order one from St. Louis! I'm so proud of my city.
(However, in the production the very large and clearly labeled box only had a little IOU note in it, because the whole thing clearly had a budget of like $27 and a lot of that was spent on blood. But at least I learned some chair facts)
I am having delicious brisket for dinner and then I am going to see Sweeney Todd at a local theater. I have a whole theme going on here.
