Last week, the Trump administration quietly released a sweeping new federal rule that would use funding threats to force institutions across the country to reject transgender people. The 400-page proposed regulation would codify the administration's anti-trans executive orders into binding federal policy, imposing a blanket prohibition on federal funds going toward "gender ideology"

The proposed rule, formally titled "Regulation for Federal Financial Assistance," rewrites the government-wide framework governing all federal grants across every agency. Among its most consequential provisions, it requires that before a federal grant recipient can receive money, the award must pass a "pre-issuance review" conducted by a political appointee—not a career expert or peer reviewer—to ensure it is "consistent with applicable law, Federal agency priorities, and the national interest." The regulation explicitly instructs these appointees to screen for "denial by the recipient of the sex binary in humans or the notion that sex is a chosen or mutable characteristic." [...] An institution that acknowledges transgender people exist—through its policies, its training, its healthcare, its bathroom access, its HR procedures, its name-change processes—could be deemed to "deny the sex binary" or to “support the notion that sex is mutable” and have its federal funding blocked.

And further disclaimer, there are exceptions to everything I’ve said in this post, and it only applies to East and Southeast asian people who are either not mixed or white-mixed, as those are the hair types I’m most familiar with.

this incident cannot be separated from comments made by former taoiseach (prime minister) bertie ahern last week about muslim people and african people in ireland, specifically congolese people. he said "the ones I worry about are the africans" while out canvassing in a local bye-election for a fianna fáil candidate.

if you hear friends, colleagues, family members, classmates, neighbours or anyone you know repeating racist comments from the likes of bertie ahern, call them out. do not let their racism go unchecked. a climate of suspicion and hatred against Black people and people of colour makes murders like this more likely to happen. everyone needs to do the work do dismantle this climate of fear and encourage compassion, tolerance and community in its place.

5 years ago I was at a two month residency where I worked on a series called "Space Boy and Prince of The Sea", exploring illustrative work on porcelain. The content of the illustrations centered around "Space Boy", a calico cat, and his love the Prince Of The Sea.

The story, which I never fully fleshed out, was of a calico cat (trans allegory) who felt out of place in his barn cat upbringing (oops personal insert) who left his planet to search the depths of Space for somewhere he belonged. He ended up crash landing on a water planet, full of mermaid cats. There he had to learn how to live his life and figure out what it means to need a suit, where he could feel safe taking it off, and other accommodations to survive on a water planet - but its also where he found community and a sense of belonging. The love between him and "Prince Of The Sea" was always kept vague, and I wondered if it was a singular prince or if he would find romantic and platonic love in ways he didnt expect as he built community in this new world. Who knows!

The story is a pretty simple direct allegory to a lot of things I was going through and thoughts I abstractly worked through. I think I will revisit it, and hope to carve more time to explore this soon!
