The current generation of my armadillidium depressum colony is winding down and I've been feeling down about it recently. The heat didn't help I think. Around 3-4 have died every week since the start of the summer and it's always the large adults, the juveniles don't seem to be dying and the soil is full of mancae that are thriving so I don't think it's anything ventilation or moisture or pesticide related. Age has to be the biggest factor if it's only the larger ones, right? 😔
These guys had a good run. There are still a lot of the big 'uns left, running around and devouring leaves like nothing happened. They were the offspring of a single pair of depressums I found outside years ago, and according to my records they were all born in early March 2024. The majority of them survived to this point. Two and a half years is very good for an isopod - some stats say they can live up to three or even five years, but these aren't averages, I'm trying not to fall into the extremes fallacy - and there wouldn't be room for the babies to grow if the adults didn't vacate that space eventually. But I still feel sad because I'm really attached to these guys, their gentle nature and bumbling demeanour brighten up all my days. It'll be a bittersweet day when the generational takeover is complete
If only you could live forever. Being orbs and escape artists. The way god intended
