Because a new one was long overdue and I don't want anything relating to that oc showdown blog as my pinned anymore
And I figured it'd be fun if I answered some questions still because I'm sure plenty of people by now have gone;
"Sege I thought this was the Sonic brainrot always blog, what the hell is all this Pokemon Gurren Lagann stuff going on?!?"
At the end of summer 2024 I rewatched Gurren Lagann for the first time since 2011. And then the brainrot took hold. The difference between me in 2011 and me in 2024 is that I can draw humans and anime men now. Which means I can just keep making my own stuff for this anime that's been over for almost two decades--
At the same time my dormant Pokemon obsession finally became active again for the first time in like 2 years. And it became VERY active. So Gurren Lagann did what it does best and combined with the reignited Pokemon hyperfixation rather than being pushed out by it.
It didn't help that I was being enabled via my friend @/riftclaw who's had a long time Pokemon au xe is now writing and went "Kamina and Simon can be canon to my au" (I originally intended for it to be an au of an au)
You should go read the stuff xe has out for the au so far btw I love it and it's part of what threw me face first back into pokemon GO READ IT
Anyway obv these are not my OCs so it's not like I have written out lore here or have OC memes to reblog and answer questions for. So I'm gonna answer some questions under the cut as a sort of FAQ as to what's wrong with me lately and what's going on with these au versions bc I think they'd be fun to answer.
AU FAQ under readmore
What are Simon and Kamina doing in your friend's Pokemon au??
Chilling-- shdHSGDHS. Ok in-univers they're just regular(ish) dudes that were born in that world. The irl reason? My sudden Gurren Lagann hyperfixation happened simultaneously as my Pokemon one. And I'd spent like all year reading snippets of the fic Blake was working on, along with worldbuilding for it.
In that au's lore, a lot of the people in Blackthorn are dragon hybrids. This results in them having naturally occurring bright red hair, or blue hair. They also have some dragon-esque traits like fangs or sharp teeth. The Tatsumi family (Lance's and Clair's family) have red eyes.
The red eyes given are EXACTLY like the ones Kamina has in canon. So while juggling these two hyperfixations I was like "Haha hey Blake you know how Kamina gets drawn with fangs in canon super often, has red eyes, blue hair, and an affinity for capes? What if I made an au of your au where he's Lance's and Clair's brother" and then Blake was like "He's canon TO the au now" and the ball kinda got rolling from there (Thank u Blake)
Simon is also a hybrid tho not a dragon one. There's a town in the au that gets literally wiped off the map because of an earthquake/massive sinkhole. So I plopped Simon in there to keep his earthquake trauma. Even tho they're not from the same town, Kamina and Simon still find each other and Kamina takes him in to Blackthorn after the town's disaster happens and Simon loses his parents in it.
Extra bit of info: Kamina's full name in this au is Kamina Tatsumi, and Simon's is Simon Takashi. I know it's popular fanon to give them the last names of Jiha/Giha since other characters in canon have their last names be the villages they came from. But I don't subscribe to this since they tried so hard to get AWAY from their village I don't think they'd adopt it into their names, so I got Simon a whole new last name even tho this is an au.
Are other Gurren Lagann characters in this AU?
PROBABLY although they would be background/side characters since Kamina and Simon are what I focus on here. They have a whole wide world to exist in so they could be out and about. Like I can't imagine Simon NOT meeting up with and eventually dating Nia. If Kamina gets to live then she should get to live too. She'd probably be a fairy hybrid of some sort because I mean. Look at her.
Kittan might be somewhere out there too as a friend Kamina occasionally meets up with and bickers with, kind of like a rival. I don't think he'd be a hybrid because I think it's funny how in episode 4 when Kamina met him he was like 'SHOW ME YOUR TEETH SO I CAN SEE THAT THEY'RE FLAT AS PROOF YOU'RE NOT A BEASTMAN' like he doesn't frequently get drawn with fangs.
Tl;dr: Yes the other GL characters could potentially be out there even if my focus isn't on them. It's a big world out there and Kamina and Simon are traveling it, so they're meeting all sorts of people all the time.
Ok but Sege you appear to have gone insane over Adaman/Kamina? How did this happen? Is it a crackship?
This is not a crackship-- at least not by the og definition. Nowadays it seems to get used as a term for 'a ship that isn't canon' but the og definition meant 'silly unserious joke ship'.
Adaman/Kamina is canon to the au and is treated completely seriously.
Did I mean for it to happen? Nope! It was another case of 'author does the writing and then the character end up doing whatever they want instead of anything that was planned for'
In this au Kamina is the one that ends up living through the events of Legends Arceus-- except unlike in the game he gets to bring himself and Ingo home after fighting Arceus.
To me Adaman is bisexual af, and I figured he'd have a crush on Kamina. It was meant to be silly-- Kamina is an acearo that hasn't found the words for it because he's just not focused on that. He's focused on Pokemon and battling and traveling the world. He's oblivious to a lot of advances. So Adaman runs into a lot of situations where Kamina's absolutely dense about how he feels.
But then I was like 'well. Adaman is impatient, and he's got no lack of confidence. I don't think he'd keep these feelings to himself for the entirety of Kamina's stay in Hisui'
And things kinda spiraled from there because then we have Kamina, who's been stuck in Hisui for a couple months or so at that point. The Pokemon team he's familiar with-- some of which he's grown up with, isn't there. There aren't even that many dragon types in Hisui for him to speak to and be himself around (he's hiding the whole dragon thing given how the people of Jubilife are around Pokemon alone)
He's been separated from his family and friends. Ingo and Adaman are the people he hangs around the most, and some of the only people that know (save for a few other Diamond clan members that were there when Adaman himself found out)
He's got no people to be around most the time, no one to really let in his personal space. And as someone that's grown up with a bunch of siblings and then gone on to make a bunch of friends, that's a big thing for him.
He's lonely af, so when Adaman confesses by kissing him, he gives in to that. They end up with a sort of arrangement where they both get affection for different reasons. And then it starts deepening beyond that. It's queerplatonic rather than a strict romance, so what that means to them fluctuates through the story. All the while they're keeping it a secret just so it doesn't seem like the guy who fell from the sky is playing favorites with one of the clans over the others.
But by the nature of how Legends Arceus would end if there was an option for the player to go back from wherever Arceus plucked them from, it does mean that they get separated in the end. They know this will happen but they stay with each other until the end anyway.
They move on with their lives, but they do end up reunited even though it's years down the line
Anyway that's why I've been insane lately SHDGSHDHHSD. Will add more stuff if I think of any or get asked

Despite it all I can't hate solarpunk. It's caramel-apple sweet-simplistic, a desire for a greater world on one simple axis without grappling with any kind of political reality. You can chip at its ankles but unfortunately it will still be kind of awesome epicsauce at its heart. Sometimes you really do need to just cut past all the hard-nosed realism, get back to the kid looking up at you with those big blubbering eyes saying "what if everyone was nice to eachother?" That kid does not know an ant's arse about the real world or how it works, but they're still 1000 times more correct than all of us trying to explain why it can't be done. You can't lose sight of the stupid, hopeless dream. You can't lose sight of it. Otherwise you turn into a dickhead.
If you canât imagine a future where things are better, how can you begin to build it? I think solarpunkâs strength lies in being a sandbox playground where we can exercise our hope muscles and work out what we as a collective would want from a better world. Sometimes you just need to practice having hope for a future where we all have space to live and love in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. Joy is resistance
ALSO Iâm curious about the psychics of saffron? what about saffron city had more psychics ending up there, to the point theyâre known as the psychics of saffron?
DXZ has different strains, each one kinda analogous to a pokemon evolutionary line. In some areas you got little pockets of specific infection, like how Blackthorn largely ended up with druddigon posthuman survivors.
Saffron is similar to Blackthorn; the strain that ran amok in the city was the kadabra/alakazam strain. There's an ancient pokedex entry that talks about a boy turning into a kadabra; instead of being a reference to Kafka's metamorphosis like in the original*, in GEO it references the posthuman survivors in Saffron, namely Yuri, who is Sabrina's father.
since it doesn't take massive, visible mutation for posthumans to have hybrid kids, a lot of the kids born in Saffron after the first plague were psychic. and that was weird and hard to deal with at first but there was a big enough group to kinda turtle up and keep the kids safe. over time the saffron population got used to the psychic kids and the city itself became known as the psychic capital of japan. other psychics came to saffron looking for community, because many of them encountered the same sort of hostility gold did in holon, and the city's reputation kept growing.
As the kids got older and started growing into their powers, a psychic school of a sort was established, which pulls double duty as a research facility looking into the psychic powers hybrids are capable of as well as teaching people control and making sure they can access the meds that make their brains less loud.
and even in the modern day psychics from all over the world tend to turn back to Saffron for guidance on handling their powers. there's a pretty tight knit online community trading information and tips on how to handle psychic burn-out and overexposure to outside thoughts.

whatâs the verdigris disaster? Iâve seen you mention it couple of times Iâve seen, it sounds like it mightâve been an earthquake of some kind?
verdigris was a small town to the south-west of mt moon, which housed one of the initial gyms for the indigo league--a ground type gym run by an older man named gene.
verdigris was one of the towns that popped up during the war, hidden in an isolated spot in the mountains and taking in refugees from around the country. some of them dissolved after the war ended, but verdigris stayed inhabited.
On september 3rd, 1995, an initial tremor shook the city, causing minor damage to buildings, and that was all the warning the residents and visitors got before the town collapsed into a sinkhole. the epicentre was at the southern side of town, roughly where the gym was; that area sank lower than the rest of the town, but almost the entire town went down. verdigris was ruled uninhabitable, and the survivors were moved to celadon.
it comes up a bit bc lance and his best friend rune were both in the town at the time of the disaster. lance was shopping for supplies when the initial tremor hit--the boys were planning on leaving once rune finished challenging gene at the gym. The ceiling of the building caved in, but lance's dragonair evolved in a panic in order to keep it from crushing his trainer, so lance and the other people in the shop were able to get out safely. that also lead to lance trying to safely cross the town to find rune, stopping to dig out anyone he and his pokemon could detect along the way.
rune, however, was at the gym at the time, and he didn't survive.
in the current day there's a memorial by the cliffs near the doomed town, and survivors and family members still gather once a year for a memorial service.
earthquakes aren't uncommon in japan, but the sinkhole was a surprise. it's theorised that pokemon of some kind must've burrowed under the town and destablised the ground, but they were never really able to confirm that. a new gym was opened in viridian to replace the fallen verdigiris gym a few months later.
On the Pokemon Gurren side of things, Verdigris is also where Simon and his parents lived.
Kamina knew them from before since he met Simon during one of the times that he snuck away from Blackthorn to explore outside of it
Simon's parents were one of the many victims in Verdigris, and Simon himself had dug himself most of the way out before he was reached from the outside
Needless to say Simon didnt get anywhere near to moving to Celadon because Kamina took him in and took him to Blackthorn as soon as he could
Yoko đ¤ Adaman = having all their flirting go so far over Kaminas head it gets to the stratosphere and having to resort to pulling him into a kiss just for him to finally Comprehend
"I need lots of power, especially today. Yoko, you just watch my back. I'll crush anything that comes up at me from up ahead. You deal with anything that comes from behind."

every day i am thankful to ancient humans for the domestication of the cat. fucking genius idea. agriculture was a good one too btw but you really outdid yourselves with the cat thing
came back imprisoned by obligation to bear responsibility for the love and grief that others feel for you. came back painfully aware of the horror of existence. came back to a life you cannot bear to live anymore, to a body you cannot bear to call yours.
thinking about gurren lagan, specifically the grief arc and the way everyone else was able to keep moving forward while simon got stuck in his grief. of course a large part of that is him being the person who knew kamina best, but i canât help but think about how kamina and simonâs village was the only one without that âif you canât keep moving youâre left behindâ mentality. sure living underground wasnât pleasant, but they werenât ever really in a position where they couldnât afford to wait for someone to get back on their feet. they had enough food and water to support the population, and knew how to expand their tunnels. the earthquakes were a danger absolutely, but they werenât the same as the constant need to keep moving forward or die we see from those on the surface.
yoko, leeron, kittan, the crew â theyâve all been living and carving out a patch of survival for themselves on the surface for significantly longer than kamina and simon. they likely couldnât afford to stay in one place for too long and would have needed to be on the move near constantly since until gurren lagan, their weapons were only so effective against the gunmen. even in rossiuâs village supplies were so limited they could only have so many people, and rigged the straws to exile those who contributed less. as much as I spent the entire arc screaming for them to be nice to my boy, the way the crew handled not just their own grief but also simonâs was really well done, and interesting to think about. theyâre not necessarily being harsh to be mean (though thereâs definitely a lot of bitterness), but rather because they do care about simon and want him to be able to get back up, to be able to keep up. and they probably donât get that simon isnât used to not having the space or support to grieve, and are trying to help him in their own ways. because if he kept on letting himself be consumed by grief, he would have died too. and as frustrated as the crew was with him for not living up to their expectations, no one wanted him to die

"The House of the Rising Sun" is an American traditional folk song, sometimes called "Rising Sun Blues". It tells of a person's life gone wrong in the city of New Orleans. Many versions also urge a sibling or parents and children to avoid the same fate. The song was first collected in Appalachia in the 1930s and is listed as number 6393 in the Roud Folk Song Index. Like many folk songs, "The House of the Rising Sun" is of uncertain authorship. Musicologists say that it is based on the tradition of broadside ballads, and thematically it has some resemblance to the 16th-century ballad "The Unfortunate Rake" (also cited as source material for "St. James Infirmary Blues"), yet there is no evidence suggesting that there is any direct relation. The folk song collector Alan Lomax suggested that the melody might be related to a 17th-century folk song, "Lord Barnard and Little Musgrave", also known as "Matty Groves", but a survey by Bertrand Bronson showed no clear relationship between the two songs.
"House of the Rising Sun" was said to have been known by American miners in 1905. The oldest published version of the lyrics is that printed by Robert Winslow Gordon in 1925, in a column titled "Old Songs That Men Have Sung" in Adventure magazine. The oldest known recording of the song, under the title "Rising Sun Blues", is by Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster, who recorded it on September 6, 1933. Ashley said he had learned it from his grandfather, Enoch Ashley, who got married around the time of the Civil War, which suggests that the song could have been written years before the start of the 20th century. Roy Acuff, an "early-day friend and apprentice" of Clarence Ashley's, learned it from him and recorded it as "Rising Sun" on November 3, 1938.
It has been recorded by a number of artists. The most successful commercial version, recorded in 1964 by the English rock band The Animals, was a number one hit on the UK Singles Chart and in the US and Canada. As a traditional folk song recorded by an electric rock band, it has been described as the "first folk rock hit". The Animals vocalist Eric Burdon revealed that he first heard the song in a club in Newcastle, England, where it was sung by the Northumbrian folk singer Johnny Handle. The Animals were on tour with Chuck Berry and chose it because they wanted something distinctive to sing. The Animals had begun featuring their arrangement of "The House of the Rising Sun" during a joint concert tour with Chuck Berry, using it as their closing number to differentiate themselves from acts that always closed with straight rockers. It elicited a tremendous reaction from the audience, convincing initially reluctant producer Mickie Most that it had hit potential, and between tour stops the group went to a small recording studio in London to capture it in just one take on May 18, 1964.
"House of the Rising Sun" was a trans-Atlantic hit: after reaching the top of the UK pop singles chart in July 1964, it topped the US pop singles chart two months later, on September 5, 1964, where it stayed for three weeks. Many cite this as the first true classic rock song, and it became the first British Invasion number one unconnected with the Beatles. It was the group's breakthrough hit in both countries and became their signature song. The song was also a hit in Ireland twice, peaking at number 10 upon its initial release in 1964 and later reaching a brand new peak of number 5 when reissued in 1982. The Animals' rendition of the song is recognized as one of the classics of British pop music. It is one of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll". The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) ranked it number 240 on their list of "Songs of the Century". In 1999, it received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. It has long since become a staple of oldies and classic rock radio.
"The House of the Rising Sun" received a total of 93,6% yes votes!
