Because a new one was long overdue and I don't want anything relating to that oc showdown blog as my pinned anymore
And I figured it'd be fun if I answered some questions still because I'm sure plenty of people by now have gone;
"Sege I thought this was the Sonic brainrot always blog, what the hell is all this Pokemon Gurren Lagann stuff going on?!?"
At the end of summer 2024 I rewatched Gurren Lagann for the first time since 2011. And then the brainrot took hold. The difference between me in 2011 and me in 2024 is that I can draw humans and anime men now. Which means I can just keep making my own stuff for this anime that's been over for almost two decades--
At the same time my dormant Pokemon obsession finally became active again for the first time in like 2 years. And it became VERY active. So Gurren Lagann did what it does best and combined with the reignited Pokemon hyperfixation rather than being pushed out by it.
It didn't help that I was being enabled via my friend @/riftclaw who's had a long time Pokemon au xe is now writing and went "Kamina and Simon can be canon to my au" (I originally intended for it to be an au of an au)
You should go read the stuff xe has out for the au so far btw I love it and it's part of what threw me face first back into pokemon GO READ IT
Anyway obv these are not my OCs so it's not like I have written out lore here or have OC memes to reblog and answer questions for. So I'm gonna answer some questions under the cut as a sort of FAQ as to what's wrong with me lately and what's going on with these au versions bc I think they'd be fun to answer.
AU FAQ under readmore
What are Simon and Kamina doing in your friend's Pokemon au??
Chilling-- shdHSGDHS. Ok in-univers they're just regular(ish) dudes that were born in that world. The irl reason? My sudden Gurren Lagann hyperfixation happened simultaneously as my Pokemon one. And I'd spent like all year reading snippets of the fic Blake was working on, along with worldbuilding for it.
In that au's lore, a lot of the people in Blackthorn are dragon hybrids. This results in them having naturally occurring bright red hair, or blue hair. They also have some dragon-esque traits like fangs or sharp teeth. The Tatsumi family (Lance's and Clair's family) have red eyes.
The red eyes given are EXACTLY like the ones Kamina has in canon. So while juggling these two hyperfixations I was like "Haha hey Blake you know how Kamina gets drawn with fangs in canon super often, has red eyes, blue hair, and an affinity for capes? What if I made an au of your au where he's Lance's and Clair's brother" and then Blake was like "He's canon TO the au now" and the ball kinda got rolling from there (Thank u Blake)
Simon is also a hybrid tho not a dragon one. There's a town in the au that gets literally wiped off the map because of an earthquake/massive sinkhole. So I plopped Simon in there to keep his earthquake trauma. Even tho they're not from the same town, Kamina and Simon still find each other and Kamina takes him in to Blackthorn after the town's disaster happens and Simon loses his parents in it.
Extra bit of info: Kamina's full name in this au is Kamina Tatsumi, and Simon's is Simon Takashi. I know it's popular fanon to give them the last names of Jiha/Giha since other characters in canon have their last names be the villages they came from. But I don't subscribe to this since they tried so hard to get AWAY from their village I don't think they'd adopt it into their names, so I got Simon a whole new last name even tho this is an au.
Are other Gurren Lagann characters in this AU?
PROBABLY although they would be background/side characters since Kamina and Simon are what I focus on here. They have a whole wide world to exist in so they could be out and about. Like I can't imagine Simon NOT meeting up with and eventually dating Nia. If Kamina gets to live then she should get to live too. She'd probably be a fairy hybrid of some sort because I mean. Look at her.
Kittan might be somewhere out there too as a friend Kamina occasionally meets up with and bickers with, kind of like a rival. I don't think he'd be a hybrid because I think it's funny how in episode 4 when Kamina met him he was like 'SHOW ME YOUR TEETH SO I CAN SEE THAT THEY'RE FLAT AS PROOF YOU'RE NOT A BEASTMAN' like he doesn't frequently get drawn with fangs.
Tl;dr: Yes the other GL characters could potentially be out there even if my focus isn't on them. It's a big world out there and Kamina and Simon are traveling it, so they're meeting all sorts of people all the time.
Ok but Sege you appear to have gone insane over Adaman/Kamina? How did this happen? Is it a crackship?
This is not a crackship-- at least not by the og definition. Nowadays it seems to get used as a term for 'a ship that isn't canon' but the og definition meant 'silly unserious joke ship'.
Adaman/Kamina is canon to the au and is treated completely seriously.
Did I mean for it to happen? Nope! It was another case of 'author does the writing and then the character end up doing whatever they want instead of anything that was planned for'
In this au Kamina is the one that ends up living through the events of Legends Arceus-- except unlike in the game he gets to bring himself and Ingo home after fighting Arceus.
To me Adaman is bisexual af, and I figured he'd have a crush on Kamina. It was meant to be silly-- Kamina is an acearo that hasn't found the words for it because he's just not focused on that. He's focused on Pokemon and battling and traveling the world. He's oblivious to a lot of advances. So Adaman runs into a lot of situations where Kamina's absolutely dense about how he feels.
But then I was like 'well. Adaman is impatient, and he's got no lack of confidence. I don't think he'd keep these feelings to himself for the entirety of Kamina's stay in Hisui'
And things kinda spiraled from there because then we have Kamina, who's been stuck in Hisui for a couple months or so at that point. The Pokemon team he's familiar with-- some of which he's grown up with, isn't there. There aren't even that many dragon types in Hisui for him to speak to and be himself around (he's hiding the whole dragon thing given how the people of Jubilife are around Pokemon alone)
He's been separated from his family and friends. Ingo and Adaman are the people he hangs around the most, and some of the only people that know (save for a few other Diamond clan members that were there when Adaman himself found out)
He's got no people to be around most the time, no one to really let in his personal space. And as someone that's grown up with a bunch of siblings and then gone on to make a bunch of friends, that's a big thing for him.
He's lonely af, so when Adaman confesses by kissing him, he gives in to that. They end up with a sort of arrangement where they both get affection for different reasons. And then it starts deepening beyond that. It's queerplatonic rather than a strict romance, so what that means to them fluctuates through the story. All the while they're keeping it a secret just so it doesn't seem like the guy who fell from the sky is playing favorites with one of the clans over the others.
But by the nature of how Legends Arceus would end if there was an option for the player to go back from wherever Arceus plucked them from, it does mean that they get separated in the end. They know this will happen but they stay with each other until the end anyway.
They move on with their lives, but they do end up reunited even though it's years down the line
Anyway that's why I've been insane lately SHDGSHDHHSD. Will add more stuff if I think of any or get asked

can you imagine being a parent in the pokemon world and your kid comes home with one of those straight up basically human pokemon. i know those motherfuckers can talk.
its morning. i see my childs Throh getting some oj from the fridge. 'morning', i say. he doesnt catch himself in time and says 'morning' back. he freezes and we both stare at each other knowingly. 'throh,' he says, but its too fucking late
The reason Iβm doing this in the first place is that a lot of evil karma options in fallout 3 are just inconvenient. Like I could go out of my way to blow up a city or I could not blow up a city and get a much more convenient free house and keep access to their merchants.
So in order to keep getting the full evil karma experience, every time I do something convenient or utilitarian that raises my karma I go back to Moriartyβs Saloon and just open his terminal over and over again.
Thus, my good boy points are eliminated through repeated computer touching and the regulators here are hunting me down for looking at Moriartyβs personal data a hundred times in a row.
Whatβs really funny about lowering your karma this way is that after you do a major good Karma action and listen to the radio, the radio DJ Three Dog will be like this horrible fucker from vault 101 we all hate him so much you know that guy? He did another fucking thing. He saved a thousand orphans.
hi why does the simon grieving arc keep making me sob. I should be asleep rn but this show is straight up addicting
AHAHA wwelcome to the well written grief that punches your heart!
AND IT IS, RIGHT? The first time i watched it i was like 'one more episode and thats it for tonight' and that was... Episode 8. I wanted to watch more so bad like HEY, SHOW, WHAT THE HELL even as i needed a break to weep and process All That
okay but if I asked really nicely would you tell me about gold/cain π₯Ί
THIS ONE'S GONNA BE LONGER I'M SORRY
cain "gold" maple is a hybrid who was born in holon (the area which in the real world is venezuela). gold's a fairly kind-hearted person but he's also very much a cat at heart so he gets himself into trouble constantly. he's pretty good at getting himself back out of it though, so it's fine.
gold's the grandson of russet maple, a japanese man who bought up most of the old world aviation companies during the collapse and whose company is still the majority air travel provider worldwide. his mother, amber maple, is a very skilled pokemon trainer who took it up when pokemon training was new, and his father, julio ramirez, was a posthuman with mew genes.
julio was chased out of holon city before gold was born, as people had a tendency to treat posthumans as carriers of dxz and drive them out of civilisation during the period after the third plague. amber stuck around with baby gold for as long as she could in the hopes julio would come back, but eventually the negative opinions of her psychic child lead to violence, so amber took gold and moved them both to orre. they stayed there for several years, during which time gold got run over by one of those american-style trucks, which left him with longterm chronic pain and mobility issues. they ended up moving again, to johto, when gold was 14 after it became obvious the public opinion of hybrids was becoming quite positive in the greater tohjo region thanks to lance and the rest of the pack.
because of his disability, amber didn't allow gold to go on an adventure at 15 (minimum age to get a pokemon trainer's license in any jurisdiction). instead he ended up interning at cherrygrove's pokemon centre until he was 17, when the Incident where silver stole totodile occurred and gold chased him to violet. gold challenged falkner and got the zephyr badge after silver gave him the slip as a sort of souvenir, then elm argued w amber that gold is clearly capable and also kinda depressed, let him go do the fun thing he wants to do
so gold dips into his trust fund to buy a motorhome (bc with his issues, a tent isn't gonna cut it) and starts off on a journey. he and silver end up becoming good friends and then start racing each other to see who can get eight badges first (silver does by a technicality bc gold definitely beats him to blackthorn).
gold meets lance when the lake of rage event occurs, which is about two years after gold starts journeying; the radio signal affects hybrids as well, so lance and drago have to rescue gold from the consequences of trying to punch the red gyarados in the face. he helps lance clear out the hq, they both need to collapse for a few days afterwards because of the damage the radio signal does to them, and it leads to them talking more casually and deciding to keep in touch.
so in that period where silver is out in the middle of the forest gold and lance are chatting over texts, hanging out in lance's free time, gold is patching up lance's injuries for him because he doesn't want to get scolded by the doctor in blackthorn Again, lance is deducing gold's romance author pen name and reading him for filth, they're both dealing with the aftereffects of being exposed to the radio signal in different ways, lance gets himself shot, lance loans gold one of his dragonite so gold can start learning to ride one safely, they start taking down rockets and poachers as a team, they start dating. lance is demi so it takes him a while to begin developing feelings for people and without the earlier friendship building those wouldn't have happened.
by the time the radio tower stuff happens, gold has pretty much settled down in blackthorn w lance but he still has the goal of making it to the league and fighting his boyfriend there. which he does a couple years later. and kisses him on live tv before proposing after he wins. go big or go home

"Listen up! Alright you bozos, I'm glad you all could make it here today! About that huge ganman from this afternoon, you can be sure that it'll come back tomorrow! And when it shows it's ugly face again, I say we steal that big ass ganman from them! We're just gonna help ourselves to it. After tomorrow that big hunk of junk's gonna be our headquarters! Pretty sweet, right? We've come this far from stealing ganmen from the beastmen, there's nothing to be afraid of!"
trying to figure out how to break it down without giving you a couple thousand words lmao
as a kid he was very isolated from everything, his only friend was an abra he stole from a game corner shipment. when rocket collapsed and giovanni left, he tried to survive on the streets of viridian, did ok at it, but things got bad and eventually, he left too and walked the gauntlet from route 22 to new bark town with nothing but abra and a backpack the nurse at viridian pokemon centre totally didn't give him.
he gets to new bark town, steals a totodile, runs into my oc gold* and they get into a fistfight. gold chases him all the way up sprout tower and silver gets away by jumping out the window. very loony toons.
*you have no idea how impossible it's been to shift to calling him cain instead ("gold" was only meant to be a placeholder) partly bc it's been like 20 years and partly bc he IS the kinda guy that would have a dorky nickname like that. you asked about silver and not gold so i won't get further into it than that lmao but if you want info lmk
they run into each other here and there for a bit after that, and eventually gold finds out silver is like. sleeping under a tarp in the forest every night so he bullies silver into letting him buy him a tent. and supplies. and gives him money. and silver begrdugingly accepts this and somehow they are friends now.
and then the next big major deviation is that the lake of rage situation happens, and silver is there fucking with the rockets bc he's kinda blaming team rocket for the whole my father sucks and left me behind thing, he runs into lance and drago and drago takes out half his pokemon team without even being told what to do. and the worst part is that lance shows mercy and tells drago to stand down. how fucking dare he.
so silver takes off into the woods north of the lake of rage, crosses the fence, and heads into one of the abandoned cities up there to train solo for a year. this period ends when he gets bit by an absol carrying active-phase pokerus and gold and lance (who have been having an entire romance arc in the background) have to come and airlift him to goldenrod for treatment.
modern treatments for dxz-ap infection are MUCH better than they were even during the third plague, so they put him under, hit him with antivirals, a bunch of human preservation strain "vaccine" to try and fix the human traits, and hybrid blood to try and neutralise the viral particles. he came out of it minimally mutated (mostly minor stuff like some changes to eye colour, hair texture, some rougher skin patches here and there), and while gold offered to pay for him to get dental work he decided to keep the fangs.
and he kinda hung around in goldenrod not knowing what to do for a few months until the radio tower incidents happened, got bullied into helping gold w that, and after the event they took him to blackthorn and put him in the (usuable) spare room in lance's house.
once the rest of the pack found out silver needed a cover story so his past links to rocket would be easier to hide they pretty much unanimously decide to adopt him. yeah what are you talking about silver nagoshi has always been one of us he just got fostered elsewhere bc his parents died in the third plague. it's so nice he's come back and decided to learn dragon taming with clair.
so in the post-radio tower days he's learning the blackthorn style of judo and working towards earning a dratini egg from pike (clair and lance's grandfather, who is nicer than he is in the games). lance is trying really hard to make friends, bc silver is gold's best friend and lance is determined not to be the reason that friendship breaks down, and that's weird bc lance is not good at it and silver still resents him a bit.
silver's also adapting to the fact that the hybrid children of blackthorn (including kamina) are in fact incredibly committed to the bit and now he's just literally another of the siblings. he grew up an only child. help him.

Wanted to do a lil master post of Kamina's Pokemon team as it is now
He has more than 6, but that's the case of anyone that's taken up Pokemon training/challenges seriously. The whole 'team of 6' thing isn't a 'you can only ever have 6' rule, it's just that you can bring no more than 6 in battles or gym/league challenges, else it'd be unfair.
Tiny:
As a kid from Blackthorn, Kamina's first Pokemon is a Dratini (now Dragonite, obv) he got as an egg when he was 12 (in the au, you can start your journey at 15, but kids in Blackthorn get to have their first Pokemon at 12, though they still gotta wait until theyre 15 if they wanna go for any gym challenges)
As such Tiny is Kamina's oldest Pokemon. And as with any of them, he sees them as his siblings. Tiny has gotten into trouble with Kamina almost as much as he's had to save his ass from it
Katsumi and Kougi:
Sometimes referred to as 'the twins' even though they might not even be actual twins. These two were unplanned narratively. But during my Kamina playthrough of HGSS, Blake and I decided that the NPCs being like 'hey stranger, have you ever heard of dragon trainers, you ever heard of Lance before???' at the player character, along with Clair making you go to the dragon's den for your badge at the player character was too funny when the context is that the player character is Kamina. So we made it into a whole thing where Kamina's whole family decides to prank him and act like he's any ol stranger walking into Blackthorn.
But then when I was actually playing the game and went to the dragon's den, i ran into two Dratini, one after the other, and i was floored when i looked up how low the chances for even ONE Dratini are. Blake joked that they aren't in in the joke and recognized Kamina and just swam up to him while he was pouting in the den being annoyed with his family. So it became a thing
Koji:
(That's him with Silver after the events of vs. Kyogre)
Though Koji was a BIT more planned than the twins, he is actually a third Dratini i ended up running into in the dragon's den in-game (I cannot stress that i was Not trying to get Dratini. I already got my Tiny for the game via the games corner, so I wasn't looking for one. I was literally just trying to get through the dragon's den while going from plot point to plot point bc of Clair. So. Kamina luck, i guess???)
But I did know I wanted Kamina to have at least one more Dragonite besides Tiny. I think that's inevitable, as a Blackthorn kid.
This third in-game Dratini was of a lonely nature, so the character started from there. After that one plot in Pokemon Masters that shows Paulo's backstory and how he couldn't save a Dratini from being captured by some asshole that just wanted to sell it's sheds, I decided that could be the kinda environment Koji came from too. A lonely dratini that hadn't come from the dragon's den, that Kamina stole away from his shitty trainer
Gurren:
We're getting into non-Dragonite territory now!
Gurren is Kamina's second main pokemon right beside Tiny! Kamina captured Gurren as a Bagon when traveling Hoenn and trying to emotionally recover after the Verdigris disaster (the event that killed Simon's parents, along with one of Kamina's friends. This friend was also Lance's best friend, so Kamina was also pretty aware that a part of his brother died that day too)
Kamina saw this literal And figurative headstrong lil thing that dreamed of flying one day, and was immediately endeared. He took him onto the team and named him Gurren as a promise that the Bagon would get his crimson wings one day.
(and now we get to the batch of lil guys i have no images or more extensive info on)
Neon:
Neon is Kamina's Noivern that he got while he was in Unova (he likes traveling there, Unova was the first place he got to see a BIG city in)
Big loud dragon? This guy is right up Kamina's alley
Kenta:
Rare pre-Hisui non-dragon on Kamina's team, this is his Krookodile. Like are you kidding me? This thing is red, and has his shades BUILT IN. He had to have one, and these are his thoughts exactly in-universe
Unnamed Talonflame:
Another one of the non-dragons, and one of the ones that's given me the most trouble as a character. It's hard to figure out, obviously, since i don't even have a name for them. But Talonflame seem right up Kamina's alley design-wise, and in-universe I know he'd want to seek out a fire type like that after dealing with Sinnoh's climate.
Kaito:
Kamina's Kyogre, which I left for last of the 'regular team' even tho he has more info on him, purely because Kamina doesn't really use him for regular battling, or battles overall unless he sees it as absolutely necessary.
Once Kaito is captured, it takes a bit for Kamina to come to terms with the fact that he now has a psychic link with something that can check in on what's going on in his brain anytime it wants. Kamina's always tried to keep some things to himself, and now the thing that almost killed him could know his deepest emotional thoughts and periods of self doubt at a moment's notice.
But he also slowly starts letting Kaito out, because he can't bring himself to just Not. He can't keep freedom from anyone. So eventually, whenever you'll find Kamina you'll also find Kaito in the nearest large body of water, relaxing while Kamina's off traveling around. Unless he senses trouble around and decides it's enough that he needs to go help. He kinda becomes like the quiet but protective uncle around Blackthorn.
Eventually he even learns to shift to a human-ish form. It's something legendaries in this setting can learn to do it they try. Kaito initially has no interest in learning this, but after Kamina disappears he realizes some things would be easier that way. Like for example people in towns would freak out a lot less if a random guy was coming through looking for someone, rather than a big whale flying over their town.
Lightning round, Pokemon Kamina got in Hisui:
Aki:
Kamina's starter Cyndaquil, now a Hisuian Typhlosion. Kamina feels like Aki is his tiny tether to home, even though he was always in Hisui. As someone that's uneasy around ghost types, Kamina thought Aki's evolution to a part ghost type form was more bullshit from Arceus and that it thought their bond would be damaged by this. It couldn't be further from the truth.
Lux:
An old Luxray Kamina caught to help him out in Hisui's wilderness. He has no qualms with helping Kamina get home, and more or less sees that as his retirement
Fang:
Kamina's Garchomp, caught as a Gabite. The first dragon Kamina ran into in Hisui outside of Volo's Gible. He was overjoyed to finally get to a dragon pokemon he could speak with
Sorairo:
An alpha Gyarados Kamina went after after he saw her flying over one of the lakes. This dragon boy is so lonely in Hisui without his family, and with Hisui only having three dragon lines, he's running off after any 'familiar face' he sees
Dewdrop:
Kamina's alpha Hisuian Goodra. Another case of Kamina seeing something he knows, and going after it. Especially as Lance has one of these. Helps that she gave him a good fight and helped him think about something other than the situation he's in for a bit.
Hisuian Zoroark:
No name yet, this Zoroark is one of the cave pokemon from the three lake trials. It's the only one of the three he caught, because unlike the other two, this one hates humans and would pose a danger to anyone nearby. He isn't sure what to do, since it's hard for him to even begin training it. The Zoroark ends up finding Kamina curious eventually. He knows Kamina isnt like other humans. He's closer to a pokemon than anyone there. AND the humans don't seem to want him, having banished him. And especially after seeing how Kamado acts towards him, Zoroark just can't wrap his head around why Kamina won't just leave the humans to whatever fate awaits them beyond the red skies
Bonus:
In the bad end au, Kamina has one Pokemon that he doesn't get in the main verse- Akaneiro, the red Gyarados from the Lake of Rage. She and Kamina are quick to bond after he calms and captures her. Team Rocket have messed up both their lives, and she's right by his side to help him in both his vengeful rampages towards them, and his search for Lance
Hes got some recovery time ahead of him but he lives. And has to deal with now being psychically linked to a legendary killer whale
ALSO GOAL MET SHSHSHSJ i was reading the Otoko manga and he gives me Several heart attacks with his heroic tendencies n im like
Ok if i can do the same with my writing of the situations he gets into then ive done my job well
Also Gurren is a Salamence! Kamina has fallen in love with the species. Stubborn literally hardheaded lil guys that just wanna fly one day, and they Do. On his travels to Hoenn he caught a Bagon and named him Gurren as a promise that he'd get his crimson wings one day

okay im getting WAY too deep into lottie and battling youβve unlocked some serious brainrot from me π, tell me about kaminaβs battle style?
UR WELCOME but also ough my weakness, battle scenarios π Ive actually been avoiding writing them in my big fic bc im like 'WELL. WHAT YOU SEE IN LEGENDS ARCEUS IS WHAT YOU GET UH...'
His battle styles differ on if hes in an actual battle or a situation where he and his team could be in danger
With the latter he'll call out commands sure but he can also go kick whoever's ass himself and his team will still know what he wants of them because theyre so in sync
Regular battles he prefers to battle offensively unless he gets the sense that going on the defence can get them their victory. He's more strategic than he lets on (much like in canon). He also likes to throw curveballs at his opponent if he gets the sense that they think they can predict what he'll do next
I know thats not much of a description but this is my weakness π
