Ash fell across the streets. The days had a yellow glow to them. The nights shined red and the sound of the planes was maddening. All my life i have trained in secret, learned my capabilities, but never actually tried anything. I was scared of the responsibility... Until the fire threatened my life and those of my townspeople.
It was called the holy fire, and my powers... They were definitely not holly. How fitting.
The fire approached the homes, threatening to ruin lives, so i set to work. With goggles, a black beanie and the black sleeve of an XL t-shirt around my face. I set myself out to stop the fire.
First i approached the road blocks and growled my voice at the police officers. I wanted to remain anonymous no matter what happened to me... They thought i was crazy, until my feet broke contact from the ground and i made my way above the mountain fire.
One of the many helicopters lit me up with its light beams as I followed my movement patterns and began withrdawing water from the sea. Extunguishing the fire as the stream covered the fire.
After twenty minutes i had contained a quarter of such fire and the helicopters watched and pointed their lights at where i should water and me. Even the news helicopters surrounded me from afar as i worked endlessly to protect the wild life.
After two hours. I had contained more than half and flew into a news helicopter, where i faked a british-australian accent and asked for a water bottle. All they knew learned about me was that i played the guitar, and the lie: i said God himself had granted me such powers in my church. Then i continued my work. Weary of moving so much water, even my flight failed me at random.
I had to extinguish more than ninety percent, or they would not be able to contain it for another three months.
My powers were failing. My body was failing and my energies were depleting. The Only thing that kept me strong enough were the cheers by the people watching from a distance, and the firefighters clapping as i passes them.
I thought I'd fail at eighty percent, but i managed to terminate the holy fire with my unholy powers.
When there was no more fire to extinguish. I looked up to the cameras, rose both thumbs with a tired smile behind my mask and fell onto my death.
They say heroes are an image and life long role models, but heroes are the memories of a person's most valiant moment. On that night, my burial, and that day every year, i am celebrated as the hero of that night. But i was not the hero of such story. I was a martyr. The heroes were those firefighters and anyone who willingly charged the fire. Knowing the odds were against them. Knowing there would be casualties... And having loved ones to leave behind for a heroic cause.
Perhaps i was a hero as well, but I had chosen not to use my gifts, no matter how unholy, and cost much more to this world. If only i had used my full potential for more than my death; I could have been a hero.
It is your turn to use your talents and gifts and never regret your actions, for you could be a hero, or live a better life.
