every time i see somebody complain about gray/colorless/monochromatic interior design, i always have to pause and think... wait, you do know that you can fill your space with color, right? please tell me you know that. the boring interior design you see online has absolutely nothing to do with your own living space. absolutely nothing. please tell me you know that.
because i can't tell if people posting those "LOOK WHAT THEY TOOK FROM YOU" comparisons of colorful kitsch vs gray blandness do know that and are just trying to Have A Public Opinion, or if they don't know that and somehow think that soul-crushingly dull interior design is an expectation or requirement.
it's not. you can just... not do that. if you don't like it. don't do it.
you can paint your furniture bright colors. you can go to any large diy/home improvement store and get a quart of paint in any color you want and you can paint your dresser or table or bookshelf or picture frames. "but i don't know how." learn. just fucking learn, okay. watch a youtube tutorial. try it anyway.
you can cover your walls with colorful art. "but i don't have any art." start collecting or making or printing things you like. you can cover your walls with fine art prints and cheesy flower prints from department stores and cutouts from magazines and gay fanart and nerdy cross-stitch all at once. "but what if people judge me." they can tell it to my framed and prominently displayed kirk/spock fanart. who the fuck cares. "but i don't know what to put up." you don't need to know anything beyond what you like. does it make you feel nice? does it spark joy? that's all you need to know.
you can use red plates and purple cups if you want. you can buy dinosaur-themed sheets and cute plushies at any age. you can cover a whole wall with your kpop photocard collection if you so desire. you can pick the brightest most obnoxious yellow or orange or green for your bed or blankets or rugs or towels or anything at all. "but it's expensive." often, yes, but you aren't doing it all at once. you are not preparing a set to showcase online. the goal is not to finish in a weekend and post it on instagram. the goal is to make a living space that makes you happy. change things when you can. "but nobody sells that stuff." yes they do and now i know you're just making excuses.
