If I have to spell it out for people then I'm doing a bad job, but I have never and will never willingly use GenAI. The only AI I have ever used are the in-house proofreading and transcription tools we are MANDATED to use at work. I have never personally accessed any AI software and I will not be doing so for any reason whatsoever.
There's a lot of uproar in the fandom space recently as people are exposing fics that were generated through AI and the author claimed it as their own writing. While in the case of the big HR fic being exposed the use of AI was clear from the Claude code, this will not be the case for every fic being generated and posted without the Created Using GenAI tags. These days I am seeing more and more posts/tweets etc of people plopping random ss from fics going "it's so easy to tell this is AI" and these posts in particular scare me.
Bc it is not that easy at all. Real people use em dashes and oxford commas and words like delve. The AI did not come up with these concepts it learned them from us, it uses them bc real people use them. Yes there are certain punctuation choices and words that it uses way more than average, but that's still more than average for a regular person. Many writers do and will continue to use em dashes and abuse oxford commas and repeat things and use "big" words. I'm genuinely concerned we're gonna enter an era where ao3 authors will face increasing scrutiny for shit like having a vast vocabulary or using proper grammar.
Yeah it's pretty fucking shitty if an author uses gen AI and tries to hide it. Using it at all is abhorrent. But pls before we tumble down a path of extreme scrutiny and outrage out of AI paranoia, just take a moment to ask yourself "is this really AI or is this a person using a phrase I have come to associate with AI bc i read somewhere that AI uses it".
A better way to tell if an author is using AI could be if they suddenly start posting a lot of fics but have no or little history of writing. If they're churning out fics extremely quickly. If their writing has very suddenly and drastically changed. None of these are ofc fool-proof indicators but sadly we don't really have those outside of the code thing. What I'm really saying is pls I am BEGGING you let's not start pointing and screaming AI every time we see an em dash or something. Let's not ss random fics and talk about how it's clearly AI bc the writing is "soulless" when we don't actually know for sure. Let's just be a bit more mindful of the fact that the majority of fics out there are indeed written by people many of whom are amateurs or just starting out or even kids and a possible witch hunt in the near future is going to hurt a lot of people who haven't really done anything wrong.

you can believe victims about what they experienced and also not want to torch the lives of the people they've accused without proof. that is a space you can walk in and usually it's not even that hard. I say this as a survivor of domestic violence. "believe victims" doesn't mean get torches and pitchforks any more than "innocent until proven guilty" means victims are lying. please please learn this "believe victims" isn't about the perpetrators it's about the victims
Like you do need to recognise sometimes that a person is not picking up your social cues and adjust your communication style accordingly. If someone isn't understanding you then you need to change up how you're communicating and not just say the same thing over & over.
Hyper-individualist cultures go, “Your emotions are your personal responsibility. Don’t burden others. Regulate privately. Maintain functionality. If you’re upset, process it offstage so the machine keeps moving.” Meanwhile certain collectivist or harmony-focused frameworks go, “Your emotions disrupt group cohesion. Don’t create discomfort. Don’t impose disharmony. Transcend or contain your reactions for the sake of the whole.”
Different mythology, same trembling fear that one person saying “actually, I feel terrible” will cause civilization to peel apart like wet drywall.

Like. There is a significant gap between 'a lot of studies do not take into account variations caused by things like female hormone cycles, which can limit how generalisable they are' and 'medical science does not apply to women', and the latter just seems to create a situation rife for bad faith actors and snake oil salesmen to reassure you that actually, THEY have the answers, because THEY listen to women, and if you simply pay them for their online subscription service-

it's wild how lack of willingness to show large amounts of your naked body in public is conflated with a discomfort or insecurity about said body. like obviously if people are motivated by those things that's also fine but it's like. "if you like your body you should want to wear as small a swimsuit as possible; the only reason to get """modest""" swimwear is if you're insecure or have religious motivations" so it's weird feeling like nah my body is awesome I just don't want every rando at the municipal pool to have visual access to it? lol. how I feel about my body is unrelated to whether strangers have a right to view it
