Seven Sentence Sunday
I haven't written as much this week but I do have a little snippet from the Stratt Tapes fic
Once the two of them had enough words to understand each other, they moved on to the task at hand. Kind of. Their next step was to figure out why Tau Ceti wasn't dimming if it had a Petrova Line and that required getting closer to take samples. In the meantime of waiting to get to their destination, Grace taught Rocky how to knit. Surprisingly, Rocky picked it up almost immediately. Stratt was rather impressed at the alien's handiwork. He had no eyes but his creations were beautiful. The same could not be said for Grace's attempts to learn how to shape things with xenonite.
Never underestimate the power of just slapping "in an AU where..." onto the beginning of a plot idea/summary. You can do whatever you want once you got that shit there. Doesn't matter how absolutely batshit insane it is. As long as it's an AU where that insanity makes even slight sense, you're fucking golden. I once saw a Jar Jar Binks/Sheev Palpatine fic whose summary started out with "A Star Wars AU where Jar Jar never met Qui-Gon, and instead became a couples/family counselor on Naboo" and like. Wild fucking concept. Probably a wild fucking story. But no matter what happens, you've already got it covered because you established right from the start that this is already a universe where Jar Jar fucking Binks is a couples/family counselor. Anything else that happens is just bizarre icing on an already buck fucking wild cake. You can do whatever you want
And before anyone's like "bUt WhAt WeRe YoU dOiNg At ThE dEvIlS sAcRaMeNt" I was ACTUALLY looking up fics about Lurtz (the urukhai secondary antagonist from Fellowship of the Ring who kills Boromir) when I came across a "Frodo Baggins & Jar Jar Binks" tag and then ended up looking at Jar Jar Binks fics. I found a fic tagged "Abraham Lincoln/Jar Jar Binks." I also read short Anakin Skywalker/Jar Jar Binks smut fic tagged Major Character death, had the sentence "body horror abounds" in the summary, included Jar Jar calling Anakin out on racism, and a first five sentences that personally came into my home shot me in the face. It was only like 1k. Is any of this better than just being at the devil's sacrament? No. But it is significantly weirder.

Lokius Fatal Frame AU. More rope marks as they enter the pitch-black underground passageway heading towards the Rope Altar.
Loki's hand sweeps up his arm but stops at his shoulder. They can't bring themself to actually touch his neck, to feel if the marks have spread there, too. Instead, they slide their hand back down, then stop again because they don't want to touch the indentations on his wrist again either. Their heart pounds, but determination swells. "There's only one way to stop this."
"What if there's no way?"
Loki wants to offer the same comfort Mobius offers them. They really do. Mobius gives it unconditionally, without care if it's returned, and Loki has learned to show comfort because of him. But this is like being back to when free will was an illusion and destiny pulled the strings. And they don't currently have the answer, but they do have the will to continue, to press on, to figure this whole thing out, to save him. "I didn't let He Who Remains dictate our future. I'll be damned if I let it happen now."

“I thought since I’m taking at least one of yours, we could trade, and you could have at least one of mine,” Zheng explained. “You’re least competent, I’m guessing?” Izzy asked. “None of my people are anything less than competent,” Zheng countered. “Then why the fuck did you hire this lot way back when?” Izzy countered with a hint of a grin that only grew when Stede scowled at him. “What?” He asked. “I think you damn well know,” Stede replied. “Were you, or were you not, incompetent at the time, Love?” “I was adequate,” Stede said confidently, even if Izzy might have been correct in hindsight.

I've finally made a start on my second MTH fic, which is a big shift from the angsty/fluffy/hc/pre-slashy vibes I've been writing a lot of lately, to something rather silly... kind of in the vein of my ridiculous What Doesn't Kill You trio of fics, from back when I was a baby writer a couple of years ago.
“What are you doing?” he asked warily, and Loki’s brow furrowed at his suspicious tone. “I’m going to heal it for you,” he replied, as though it were obvious… which it really should have been. But to his surprise, Mobius immediately flinched, eyes widening in horror as he instinctively attempted to tug his hand away. “No, no, it’s okay,” he blurted in a rush. “It’s totally fine. It’s tiny, Loki… please don’t waste your seiðr on something so insignifi–” That was as far as he got, however, the rest of his words ceasing with a pained yelp as a heavy trickle of blood began flowing with worrying rapidity from what had been an innocuous paper cut… but after a burst of Loki’s well-meaning ‘healing’ magic, was now a deep gash. Weary exasperation met heavy remorse as their gazes locked, and Loki swallowed against the sudden dryness in his throat. Faen.

i think we should be talking about the semi-recent advancements in cystic fibrosis treatment like all the time every day. there hasn’t been a drug like this since AZT medications for HIV infection it is truly fucking miraculous and very important
basically: cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease which makes the mucous a person generates extra sticky. it used to kill people in infancy, then with advancements in medical tech it killed people in young childhood, and until very recently cystic fibrosis patients could expect to live until about thirty years old with consistent painful lung infections and complications.
in 2019 the FDA approved a drug called trikafta (which is really three drugs in one) for cystic fibrosis treatment. what it essentially does is patch up the malfunctioning proteins that cause the extra sticky mucus. trikafta is effective on about 90% of cystic fibrosis patients.
people who had spent their entire lives in and out of hospitals, on and off of ventilators, suffering from pneumonia and sometimes treated through painful procedures like intubation took this drug, got out of bed, coughed up an entire lifetimes worth of mucus out of their lungs over the course of a few hours, breathed clearly for perhaps the first time in their lives, and now go on to live well into their seventies.
like isn’t that insane. isn’t that amazing. doesn’t that give you hope for the future of medical advancements and treatment. fuck. i think about it all the time……
There’s a WHAT.
For WHAT.
It's been amazing!
My ward is the respiratory ward - CF is one of the things we specialize in.
Since this med came out we haven't had a SINGLE CF admission to the ward
There used to always be a CF patient spending a couple of months with us at a time
There's a man who is 23 years old who I was sure would not survive his next admission (aim saturations 85% is end stage lung disease)
There's a set of the local frequent flyers that we all know so well
Except
No we don't
On the CF specialist ward (with reasonable staff turnover)
Half the staff have probably never even seen a CF patient
They are going to live
For the people asking "well how do we know people are living that long if it's so new????" Here's a page from the CF foundation about life expectancy.
Additionally, it should be noted that metrics like life expectancy are in no way a guarantee of... Anything. There are significant outlier CF patients who are at an advanced age now despite the odds due to a variety of different factors, having lived the majority of their lives before the development of modulators.
But the fact remains that the odds are better now than they have ever ever been before, by leaps and bounds. It isn't cured, and many patients still need significant treatment in addition to Trikafta, but it is so much better than anyone could have dreamed of twenty years ago, and that is a triumph.
Yes! My sister has a serious form of cf and finally is living a more comfortable and active life. She was also part of many of the clinical trials leading to these breakthroughs due to the nature of her cf. It's been very exciting to see.
That's absolutely incredible. Don't get me wrong. It's miraculous from a clinical standpoint. But, uhh. Not to be a downer but I need people to see this so they stay angry and stay real about what medical breakthroughs actually mean for patients. When I call something "survival gatekeeping", this is what I mean:
That is per month with the most common coupon people are likely to use.
But don't worry, there's grants and patient assistance programs you can apply for. 🤞🫠 Most people in high income countries like the USA can get it "covered" through insurance for fewer thousands of dollars. Or even less if your insurance is good or the manufacturer likes how poor and/or on Medicaid you are! A good social worker will help you with the process, and make sure your yearly reapplications and PAs are done a little early so they have time to think about it before you run out. Jesus Christ.
NEVER look at something like this and navigate away feeling better about things without asking how much it costs and who can get it. NEVER. It isn't revolutionary until poor people can access it without a struggle.

WIP Wednesday
Lokius Fatal Frame AU. Emotions are running high.
"–orry." The word is muffled into the scratchy yet safe and warm shoulder of Mobius' jacket.
"It's okay. It's all going to be okay."
"–t's not."
"We've made it through worse."
Loki shakes their head. There is nothing worse than the thought of losing him. Mobius is the one with those damned red marks. One on each limb. They don't want to consider what happens next.

More from my Starstruck AU
Tom shrugged and stuffed the handful of candy into his mouth. "Why would they stop me? I'm Tom Ryder." Grace shook his head. He should have expected as much. Tom always did do exactly as he pleased, at least according to Colt. He was always being let into any building he wanted, usually a club, and talking to anyone he wanted, usually some other big name celebrity. Grace held his hand out with a sigh. "Alright." "You want one, you have to come get it," Tom teased. He placed a skittle between his teeth, holding it delicately. He leaned in towards Grace, egging him on.

“Ship that attacked today was mercenaries,” Izzy told them. “They were hunting Stede. Had orders, but wasn’t anything official from the navy. Wondered if maybe she hired them.” “She’d do it herself,” Mary said. “She absolutely would,” Spriggs agreed. Jim glanced at the galley doorway as if they or Izzy wouldn’t have noticed someone lingering there long before now. “Zheng doesn’t like Stede, but she doesn’t hate him,” they told Izzy. “She doesn’t like Stede’s way of doing things, and she sorta hates that he’s successful despite being mostly bloodless. That said, she does have respect for him.” “Begrudgingly,” Izzy smirked. “Yeah,” Jim agreed. “So if she wanted him taken out, she’d do it herself.” “How do you know it’s not fucknuts that hired them?” Mary asked. “He’s looking to have Stede brought in alive, would make sense for him to hire them.” “And piss off every Admiral under his command? Every fucking Captain? Nah, mercenaries can’t be fucking trusted by those fuckers, especially for bringing someone back alive.” “Did we ever find out who that crew that attacked us before was?” Jim asked. Izzy shook his head. “Prisoners died before they could tell us anything. All we know is it wasn’t the Lark, Pocket and Hyde were adamant that it wasn’t.” “Saw a couple of them around Ocracoke,” Jim said.

i literally just wrote this
Loki knew power.
It had been exerted over him - wielded against him. He had seen lightning caught in the palm of one hand; seen whole worlds destroyed with the snap of a finger.
He himself had housed enough energy coursing through his own body to sustain the whole multiverse for all of time.
But the gentle strength of the arms around his shoulders was something he had never felt before. The careful fingers digging into his back and scalp, wishing to stake claim but so afraid of causing harm.
Power, without pain.
start of a new lokius drabble 👏

Tom Ryder x Ryland Grace. Coltland twins AU. Somehow Tom got Ryland back to his trailer
Tom sat down sideways on the couch beside him. Tom's elbow was leaned against the back of the couch and he watched Grace take the first few sips. It was like he was waiting for something. "Do I make you nervous?" Tom asked. There was a playful tone to his voice. "A little I guess," Grace admitted. Tom had a reputation of being unpredictable. "Because I'm pretty?" Grace didn't know how to answer. Of course Tom was pretty. He was Tom Ryder. And he didn't have his shirt on. And he was currently sitting close enough that their legs were touching. Grace didn't know where exactly to look. Tom's eyes seemed the safest option. "You're pretty too, though," Tom said.

Seven Sentence Sunday
Lokius fatal frame AU. An encounter with pre-ritual Kirie in the Moon Well.
The blinding light dims and Loki blinks as the man they love is replaced by a young woman. She tilts her head upwards, though her eyes remain hidden by hair.
"I loved him," she whispers. The words echo around the small dark space like a curse. "I loved him and they took him from me."
Then, she steps forward, moving through Loki like they're the incorporeal one. They choke as every cell in their body seizes and that same chill burns down their spine.

They all stood around the desk not saying anything for a beat before Stede brightened and grinned. “Well! There’s still a wardrobe to look through!” “Fuck,” Izzy grumbled, hobbling over to the chair he’d sat in earlier and dropping down in it again. Ed looked from him to Stede, wondering if he should try and sit and talk more with Izzy or go raid the wardrobe with Stede. “Oh! Ed, look at this. It’s a rather fine cotton shirt, very breathable, and in a lovely color.” He went to the wardrobe, ignoring the sigh from Izzy that, at the very least, sounded fond.
