Maybe it's naive of me, but whenever I see portraits like this, with just a father and daughter, it restores my faith in humanity a little. Because people seem to love this idea that fathers never loved their daughters in the past and only saw them as bargaining chips for marriage or whatever, but look at the guy in the first portrait on the left, he loves that little girl! And the dad trying to do his work while his daughter bothers him with an Old Timey Barbie. The man teaching his daughter geography, his expression is so soft! The way the man in the last portrait holds the little girl's hand! And none of these are incidental, these aren't photographs, someone (probably the father) paid good money and sat down for hours so that they could have a painting of themselves and their daughter. Probably because they loved their daughter.
From left to right: 1795 MichaĆ Jerzy Mniszech with his daughter ElĆŒbieta - Marcello Bacciarelli; Christopher Anstey and his daughter Mary Ann by William Hoare 1776; A Musician and His Daughter by Thomas de Keyser 1629; The Geography Lesson (Portrait of Monsieur G. and His Daughter), 1812; Jean-baptiste Isabey And His Daughter; Portrait of a Young Girl and Older Man by William Harrison Scarborough
(this is probably somewhat related to my other favourite genre of painting, Husband With Multiple Kids Making Come Hither Eyes At His Wife)
oh I love those! People being people is one of my favourite kinds of paintings and an important reminder that people in past times were not all that different. There were dads who loved their daughters fiercely. There were fathers who happily looked after their babies too. The German reformer Philip Melanchton for example had a cradle in his office. His wife was busy organising a household for 20 people- she was out and about, he mostly worked in his office, it made sense for him to look after their babies too babies while she dropped by at snack time.
in fact often if it was kind of safe dads had the babies in their workshops for just that reason as we can see in these paintings:
The left is âthe busy fatherâ by Theodore Weber, the right one is âAt the china repairerâs â by Wenzel Tornoe. All dads who are actively involved in childcare and a painter who thought it was a cute topic rather than anything ridiculous.
I raise you:
First Lesson by Akseli Gallen-Kallela (1865 - 1931)
Un Coup De Main (The Helping Hand) by Ămile Renouf (1845 â 1894)
Italian Winegrower And His Daughter by Francesco Baratta (1590-1666)
First Steps, Millet and Van Gogh
Remember, collectors... HOLD THE LINE! If you want a toy or collectible, don't you DARE buy it from a scalper. Buy it at market value or LESS. NEVER pay above store price for a product that just came out. The reason scalpers scalp is because collectors BUY! Stop FEEDING THEM!
If they can't sell it, they'll drop the price. The scalper is holding your piece hostage and if you give them a few months, they may let it go for cheap. Better than being a sucker to rotten business.
This is your reminder today that Irene Adler in the original Conan Doyle story is literally not a criminal. She never commits a crime.
Nor is she a seductress in any kind of negative or manipulative sense - she has a mutual relationship with a powerful man who then breaks up with her, and afterwards she keeps protection against him in the form of evidence that the relationship existed. She HAS blackmail material, she even waves it at him threateningly because he treated her like shit, but she never even uses it.
Irene Adler is not a thief, femme fatale, or blackmailer. She's just a cool lady that wants to be left alone.
@delphi-star You do recall correctly!! She does not give a shit about that man! She's happily married! She tipped him for being a witness at her wedding!
If your Sherlock Holmes adaptation has a character whose identifying qualities are that she is a seductive criminal in love with Holmes, you have created a character that is basically the literal opposite of Irene Adler and you should name her something else.
She's also -- and I cannot stress this enough -- from New Jersey. IMO this is the single most important detail missing from all the adaptations -- IRENE ADLER IS FROM NEW JERSEY.
Please just once in my life I would like to see this adapted faithfully it would be the funniest fucking thing ever.
no rest for me and im not even that wicked ?
every time someone says odysseus "just" loves his wife or "just" wants to go home, i get so agitated... you don't understand. odysseus wants everything. he wants to be at home, and he wants to be a hero. he wants to die, and he wants to live. he wants his family, and he wants to lie to them. he wants to tell the story of his life, and he wants to keep his secrets. he wants to go back and for everything to be as it was, and he wants the glory and wealth and reputation he hard-won. he wants to be at peace, and he wants to do violence. he wants to sail past the sirens safely, and he wants to hear them. he wants the war to end, and he wants it to mean something. he wants to have his cake and eat it too. he's the man of many ways. he'll get his damn homecoming but he's a rube goldberg machine. he doesn't "just" anything.

KITTIES SLAPPING AND HITTING BY THE FIRE
My cats hate each other and fight all the time but when we leave my boy cat (who has the worldâs tiniest meow) on the porch too long our girl cat will start to yell at me to let him in. Idk where this camaraderie comes from considering they spend most of their time slapping the shit out of each other.
My girl cat: đ„șmöther you have left my dĂ©arest dĂĄrlingest bröther on the pörch you must admit him pösthaste
My girl cat three seconds later: haha get bitchslapped idiot
The notes on this post are gold.

Genuinely despise when authors do the "haha we are so self aware" thing. Stop mocking whatever genre you are working with or stop working on that genre. Be more like Pratchett. Discworld characters are aware they are in a fantasy setting and it slaps because Pratchett loves fantasy and you get stuff like fate being a real thing and improbable things happening because its narratively satisfying and the characters bet on it. Its amazing
I fell in love with this chicken on sight....and I knew I had to draw her. What an iconic, confused little lass.
