June 2026 Reading Wrap Up
Stand out Books from June One Message Remains by Premee Mohamed This is a set of connected short stories exploring different parts of a fantasy world with an ever expanding empire that seems to run on souls and death. They are so incredibly atmospheric with a bunch of characters who are doing what they think is right, even as they make things worse or try to make the best of a bad situation. This collections feels magical-realism-adjacent, in the very mundanity of some of the supernatural and extraordinary elements.
How to Kill a Guy in Ten Dates by Shailee Thompson This was a lot of fun. It's a slasher/rom-com whose protagonist is doing her dissertation on those genres in film and trying to use her film knowledge to survive a real life slasher. I thought it balanced the genres well and they did work surprisingly well together!
Mortedant's Peril by R.J. Barker It took me a while to get into this one-I generally found the protagonist a bit unlikable-but he grew on me and the supporting cast is fantastic, including the massive, intricate city.
What I'm Reading Now I've got the latest Daughter of Montague book from Christina Dodd, Teach the Torches to Burn, which is in a very love-it or hate-it style of misquoted Shakespeare and modern vernacular, but I enjoy her bonkers books. I'm also in the middle of the last of Alliette de Bodard's Dominion of the Fallen novels and I've just started Frances White's The Bone Door. I enjoyed The Voyage of the Damned, and so far this is very different, though with White's same ability to make annoying characters endearing instead.
What I'm Looking Forward to in July I finally started a couple series I've been meaning to read forever, including Megan Bannen's Hart and Mercy series and Holly Black's duology sequel to The Folk of the Air. I'm also in the middle of my Murderbot reread before I read the latest and I've been enjoying Susan Dennard's Witchlands series. I'm also hoping to get to some new releases, the next volume of Snow White with the Red Hair, the latest Rosalind Throne Mystery, and the latest Palace of Rogues romance.

What a lovely shape!
*takes the hand of a period drama writer gently* A queen consort is not a queen regnant. A dowager queen is not a queen regnant either.
There is very little intrinsic institutional power in queenship. The power a consort, dowager, or queen mother has depends mostly on how much the reigning sovereign (usually a man) is willing to grant her. Needing a queen to serve as regent is exceptionally rare, and the regent is more often a male relative.
I know this is a bit of a bummer. I'm sorry.
For clarity:
Queen regnant: woman who rules in her own right, not on behalf of someone else.
Regent: Someone who temporarily assumes the powers of the monarch on account of the monarch being too young or too incapacitated to govern.
Queen consort: Woman who is married to the monarch.
Dowager queen: Woman who was married to the monarch. The monarch is dead, and she is owed support as his widow.
Queen mother: Woman who is the mother of the monarch. Usually the dowager queen, though there are exceptions if there isn't a straight line of succession.
Madcap comedy where the Dowager Queen and Queen Mother are aging sisters-in-law and lifelong snarky besties, their nephew/son (respectively) is around - he's a perfectly competent king but will never be an adult to them - and the Queens get up to hijinx as they have basically no responsibilities and the only person who can tell them "no" is The King who is busy and will also never not see them as his mom and aunty.

when i was getting trained as a welder the guys started playing sneaky grabass with each other and with me. i almost hit a few people while holding dangerous tools in my hand because they wouldn’t stop grabbing me from behind, then laughing that i ‘almost’ hit them, so i finally had to go to the instructor and say, look, i’ve had years and years of self defense training due the fact i’m a very small weirdo who is in legitimate danger of getting hatecrimed and at some point one of these guys is going to goose me again and im going to bury a wrench in his eye. get them to stop grabbing me, because i don’t want to get kicked out for hitting people.
the next day i ended up punching someone in the face with a doughnut in my fist because she thought i was being a big fucking buzzkill who tattled to teacher about a harmless game, and, guess what, grabbed my butt. i got icing all over her hair. she complained to teacher...who let everyone know that this was why they weren’t supposed to be playing grabass in the fucking shop.
anyway don’t fucking sneak up on twitchy little queers with hypervigilance, it fucking sucks and you’re lucky if you get a doughnut to a face instead of a hammer.
given that this was a welding class, I was expecting this to end up so much worse
heard someone say "who even owns a rolling pin anymore" and my brain froze trying to process it. what does that mean. are u implying rolling pins are outdated technology? did we come up with a shiny new 21st century method of flattening dough of which i remain uninformed? is there now an app on the app store people are using instead??? im losing my mind "who even owns a rolling pin" people who BAKE

do you ever find something that is so funny and you want to share it with everyone but it also requires 18 layers of context spanning things like. 90s anime. aviation history. europop. canada. in order to even remotely understand why it is so funny
in the late 90s there was an anime called initial d which was all about street racing and drifting. naturally every single drift was played for great drama and excitement.
in 1999, an italian named giancarlo pasquini released a europop song under the alias dave rogers called Deja Vu. this song was picked up as the theme song for the above anime. it in turn became a meme, a shorthand for drifting and Cool Moves as a concept.
in 1983, air canada flight 143, a full sized 767, ran out of fuel halfway to edmonton, alberta. this is not something you want to have happen to a huge airplane. the flight chose to try and make an emergency landing at a nearby decomissioned airforce base (as they were falling fast and could not make it to a proper airport), where they ran into a second problem: they were falling out of the sky at 500 feet per mile, but reached gimli (the base in question) while still too high to safely land. normally a plane would just do a big loop-de-loop to lose altitude, but they had maybe three minutes of airtime left before they hit the ground: not enough time to make any kind of circle. the pilot, therefore, decided to execute a side slip to lose speed and altitude. this is Not a move you want to do with a massive 767, because airplanes are not built for that and if you screw it up that plane is hitting the ground at a high speed at a weird angle and breaking into a million pieces. nevertheless, the captain tried it... and succeeded. the plane landed perfectly, and there were no major injuries! (a couple of people did get minor injuries when evacuating the plane after.) he did it so well, in fact, that the plane was refueled, flown out of gimli a couple days later, and continued to fly for another 20 years with the nickname "Gimli Glider."
what is a side-slip, you ask?
it's drifting.
the guy goddamn drifted his 767.
in 2008, the tv show Mayday: Air Disaster featured the gimli glider with full reenactments as an episode on season five of their show.
and so, in conclusion, the thing i have been giggling to myself about all weekend:

At the annual Houston RenFest we’d always get one or two furries that walk around and every time the general reaction from the medieval roleplayers is akin to “BEASTS? BEASTS THAT WALK LIKE MAN? FOUL!”
Last time I went a furry volunteered for an impromptu conversion/exorcism and a guy dressed as a monk gathered a bunch of people and using a Gatorade bottle performed an entire catholic christening while reading off the instructions on his Ipad. When the furry was fully “converted” he removed the head of his costume and everyone in the crowd pretended to freak out and say shit like “GlORY BE HE IS SAVED” “CHRIST HAS BROKEN HIS CURSE”
That’s the best crap i’ve heard in months
have I mentioned that i’m fucking in love with humankind
Back in 2015 or so, I went to a faire that was taking place near one of those “frozen in time” Victorian-era reenactment villages - the ones with bakeries, a blacksmith, farm animals and the like.
The actors from the village took great delight in showing up at the joust, dressed in 1890s clothing and declaring themselves to be time travellers “from the future, the far-off year of 1892!”

I really can and will blame the 9-5 for everything. "We're in a loneliness epidemic" well, we have to spend a third of our day interacting with people in a professional way that makes forming real friendships difficult and then we're peopled out by the time we're done. "People are eating more and more unhealthily" people have to spend more than a third of their day doing work related tasks and they don't want to spend their tiny amount of free time making food. "People aren't involved in their local communities" after spending more than a third of their day doing work related things people are tired and also all those community events take place during normal working hours. "People need to get more hobbies" after spending more than a third of their day working, people are TIRED and don't want to do anything that takes yet more energy. "Literacy is dying" to maintain your critical thinking skills you need to read/watch things that make you think and after spending more than a third of your day doing work related stuff you are TIRED and don't want to expend even more brainnpower. "People need to get outside more" People. Are. TIRED. Because they have to spend all of their time working or preparing for work or recovering from work or doing all the chores they couldn't stay on top of because of work. I can blame fucking anything on having to work, it is truly the root of all fucking evil.
Alright I want to know something here:
the 🙃 emoji means (approximately)

ugh!*
secret third thing you will explain in tags*

kindly reblog for bigger sample size, thanks!
i learned that actor Danny Trejo has the most on-screen deaths of anyone in Hollywood history, with 65. Followed by Christopher Lee (60), Lance Henriksen (51), Vincent Price (41), Dennis Hopper (41), Boris Karloff (41), and John Hurt (39). (x)
Yet poor Sean Bean is stuck with the reputation for dying in every movie. Unfair.
Give him time, he still has many years of dying yet to come.
Also there’s the question of density vs quantity. If you make a hundred movies and die in 50, and someone else makes 30 movies and dies in 30, the first one has died more, but the second one has died more often per movie.
It’s the DPM ratio that really counts, IMO.
65/402 16% Danny Trejo 60/282 21% Christopher Lee 51/259 20% Lance Henriksen 41/211 19% Vincent Price 41/205 20% Dennis Hopper 41/204 20% Boris Karloff 39/209 19% John Hurt 33/117 28% Sean Bean
I’m so proud of the statistical side of tumblr for coming through on this.

“Protestant” is often used as a catch-all, but it flattens the depth of protestantism. There are many types of protestants. Presbyterians. Lutherans. Baptists. Continental reformed. Methodists. The Society of St Pius X.
