I've been moving so I'm late to the Nolan Odyssey train and only just got to see it but that person who said your posts are the best part of the new movie is so right. You've inspired me to go back and re-read The Odyssey (probably The Illaid as well?) And idk thank you for your analysis of greek myth, it's such a breath of fresh air
that's very kind, thank you! i've been here (gestures at sandbox of choice) for awhile, but it's exciting to be In It right now with so many other people. i hope you enjoy your reread!
I really enjoyed your review of Nolan's Odyssey! A little bit I enjoyed that I haven't seen people talking about is making Mentes a beggar instead of a foreign king, which kind of foreshadows that Odysseus, much like Athena, will disguise himself as one (speaking of which, I think that the weirdest decision of the movie was turning Irus into an assassin; not bad, just kinda funny that his context is changed but he still fights Odysseus).
I wanted to ask you, what did you think of the removal of Eurymachus and Amphinomus? At first I thought it was very reasonable considering the movie's length, but then I realized Eurymachus sort of has a replacement (named after his father Polybus apparently) who acts in the same way as sort of a second-in-command to the suitors but doesn't have Eurymachus' silver tongue. Do you think Eurymachus could fit somewhere?
oh my god. i'll be so for real, i did not put together that that was irus. auditory processing disorder got me again. what the fuck
i didn't think a lot of the removal of eurymachus (et al) at the time; nolan is definitely not the first to streamline down to antinous as the main villain, and it's probably one of the least controversial decisions that film adaptations of the odyssey can make. i don't really see the logic of putting eurymachus' father in his place, but polybus also had pretty minimal characterization, so it doesn't end up mattering in the film as is.
and fwiw, despite all the controversy, i still don't think most of what nolan cut or changed is wrong or unreasonable for the medium he's working in. whether the cuts and changes are interesting, aesthetically pleasing, regressive, in conversation with the odyssey, or ultimately thematically successful are all different subjects. but in terms of adapting the odyssey to a standalone film, as a discrete unit where 3 hours is usually the maximum length, i don't think that will ever be suited to exploring the odyssey's entire supporting cast. supporting casts, really, because it's not just the suitors; it's odysseus' crew, his old war buddies, the monster encounters, and the gods, too. so like, i think eurymachus has a place distinct from antinous' that could fit into an adaptation of the odyssey—but not necessarily on film.
people like to lump circe and calypso together and i see why, i’ve done it too, but i think maybe calypso is better matched with nausicaa, because it’s actually nausicaa who is calypso but stronger
circe lets odysseus go freely, but the thing is, circe doesn’t care about odysseus. circe has her fun with him and his men and teaches him to tie knots and gives devastating news like “you have to go to the underworld,” but when he leaves her life is unchanged; she doesn’t care what odysseus does. she doesn’t care enough to try to keep him.
calypso cares. calypso saves his life and cares for him. she “loves” odysseus, wants to keep him, marry him, make him immortal. for seven years, she does keep him, she certainly doesn’t let him go freely, and her goodbye is wheedling and desperate and graceless.
nausicaa cares. he throws himself on her mercy, and she cares for him. she’s too young to love him, maybe (and dodged a bullet, certainly) but she wants to marry him, admires him. nausicaa could keep him if she wanted to — and she wants to.
but she doesn’t, and in her goodbye, charges him only to remember her.
i feel like nausicaa kind of walks into the odyssey out of a different genre. a fairy tale. odysseus knows what kind of story he’s in, and it’s not that. but nausicaa is tossing a ball with her friends when she throws it too far and loses it. when she goes after it she finds a cursed man. she doesn’t run away because she’s brave. she gives him her laundry to clothe himself because she’s kind. she sneaks him into her palace. if this were a fairy tale he would marry her! but when he doesn’t, she doesn’t turn into a witch or a monster. she’s still just kind to him. idk. i love her.
(in an interrogation about why i didn't even notice achilles was missing from nolan odyssey's underworld until an hour after i left the movie theater) i'm sure achilles is good to the people who like him

‘Poseidon left a party in Ethiopia because the sea vibes went rancid after Odysseus set sail’ feels like a bit I would make up, but no. That actually happened.
as someone who is lowkey obsessed with how the odyssey is structured i find this diagram by james redfield very satisfying:
"[A pattern] based on strict alternation. Odysseus faces two kinds of dangers; he may be killed before he gets home, or he may be induced to stop on the way. He faces violence and temptation." (from Redfield's 'The Economic Man')
these are Bakker's diagram's from the meaning of meat and the structure of the odyssey, which do include calypso in the symmetry! the cicones are missing though, and scylla and charybdis have been separated (rightfully so if you ask me).
BRISEIS || despite everything it’s still you
Prometheus brings fire to ancient man. Since I imagine our first encounter with tame fire may have started with a lightning bolt, I tried to give Prometheus a more lightning-look despite that being more Zeus' territory. I mean, he did steal from him.

You know how Shakespeare adaptations perform the text as written? It would be cool if there was a Homeric miniseries like that
well shakespeare wrote plays, so performance was the intended medium. in a sense the same thing does exist for homer: audio book
Hear me out more people should sing the epics. They were songs first right? I was singing the Iliad earlier and when I read the Homeric hymns I'll sing them as well. I always read those kinds of texts out loud.
good point. they should rap the epics
god i am so sorry but i have to stress that by "they" i mean black rappers and hip hop artists
I guess you're about to eat well. With the Movie coming out and all.
ah, you are new here
I meant for blog content. There'll be a lot to post about.
with the benefit of hindsight i think i owe you an apology because there has been a lot to post about. my bad, dude
