paul de pointe du lac: thank you for abusing my brother since it's the only right way he can be loved
lestat: im a woman
itâs not my business what people joke about in private but if you are going to joke about lobotomy i think you owe yourself the 22 minutes it takes to listen to howard dullyâs 2005 npr report on the transorbital lobotomy he was subjected to at the age of twelve. itâs a hard listen, but itâs a hard subject. like i said, itâs not my business, but itâs always good to know what exactly youâre joking about.
a very simple test i have for art these days is âdoes this text believe that men and women are two separate distinct types of being, does it buy into what for me is the most evil lie ever invented, which is that there are two types of human being called a man and a woman who are somehow fundamentally different - whether this is attributed to biology or the social does not really matter, it is all the same lie by different routes, one simply suggests the patriarchal lie is so powerfully true that its coercions and violences can be totally and inflexibly successful at âmakingâ these myths called men and women, a defeat i refuse to admit.â of course, most art fails. almost all art maybe. fine. thereâs interest in plumbing the contours and depth and effects of the lie. but what i really canât stand is the also common thing of the art buying into the lie and selling it to me as somehow a feminist achievement, this rather stale conviction idea that women are fundamentally different from men, perhaps just better, more moral or more peaceful or whatever of the standard run of supposed consolations for being a different kind of less human thing is supposed to be, which is still to buy into the core lie that is the basis of all patriarchal subjugation - the victorians really had that one down! - but repackaged to me as for women. and this is of course the sin of HOTD i can never really get over and which for me is a very very serious political disagreement that gets at my deepest held principles and not a frivolous fandom grievance. and it is depressing to me to be confronted constantly how unpopular a belief this is when it feels like it should be the one basic principle of any supposed radical or progressive project.

I love when I'm reading about insane people and I forget how insane they are till they talk about a MORE insane person
would you ever want to share a book/essay etc list about dolls? saw you reference a few writings in your response to other asks would be cool if you shared the stuff youâve read. I have a very similar fascination

i may be missing some but i can add to this. i may put together a list of media/technology/surveillance as well as i have quite a few collected. also i highly recommend the book âwhat do pictures want?â by w.j. t. mitchell. not related to dolls but it talks on the agency of the image which relates so much to dolls imo.

really donât like the way some kinds of violence are referred to as like collateral
You think you know something, don't you? You think you're the clever little girl who knows something. There's so much you don't know. So much. What do you know, really? You're just an ordinary little girl living in an ordinary little town. You wake up every morning of your life and you know perfectly well that there's nothing in the world to trouble you. You go through your ordinary little day, and at night, you sleep your untroubled, ordinary little sleep filled with peaceful, stupid dreams. And I brought you nightmares. Or did I? Or was it a silly, inexpert little lie? You live in a dream. You're a sleepwalker, blind. How do you know what the world is like? Do you know the world is a foul sty? Do you know if you ripped the fronts off houses, you'd find swine? The world's a hell. What does it matter what happens in it? Wake up, Charlie. Use your wits. Learn something!

lol he looks like he touched his dog (looks around room with a playful smile waiting for approval) (louder this time) he looks like he touched his dog as a child (awkwardly looks at my shoes) (mumbling) cause he just didn't know better n stuff (shuffling) not saying we have to stop being his friend.... ...

At another stage in the elaboration of therapeutic practice, Freud speaks of the curative effect, as more symptoms are generated during the course of an illness, of a âregular removal.â It is, as he says, âa Sisyphean taskâ, characteristically turning to Greek mythology for something that Anna O. herself presented in rather more modern and mundane terms when she called it âchimney-sweepingâ. This expression is recorded in the same breath â of Breuerâs, if not hers â as the talking cure, and it too is in English in her utterance and in the German text: âthe apt and serious âtalking cureâ and the humorous âchimney-sweeping."' Breuer thus brushes off the chimney-sweeping as just Annaâs little joke, and pursues it no further. But in fact it is suggestive in a number of ways.
Chimney-sweeping might, at a push, have something in common with the dramatic model. As secret conduits between the interior and the outside world, chimneys do evoke something of the ghostly ambiguity of the hysterical symptom as âforeign bodyâ, a nebulous and unwelcome visitor to the patient no longer master in their own house. But chimney-sweeping is not normally to do with getting rid of intruders. What is removed is only the unmourned ashes and dust of daily life. And the blackness of the chimney is not in itself threatening or ominous; it is the remains of a warm hearth. So chimney-sweeping might point towards the move away from the rigid separation implied by the metaphor of the foreign body. No house (or body, or subject) is at any time complete and whole, without openings through which outsiders, welcome and unwelcome, come and go. Otherwise, there would be no circulation, no life and no history. Thus it is not the foreign body as such which is the source of trouble, but the way in which it can be received. Freudâs analogy with the surgical operation points to exactly this modification: the task of analysis now is to enable the patient (like the bodily environment) to be able to take in and respond to what comes her way.
Rachel Bowlby, introduction to Studies in Hysteria by Sigmund Freud and Josef Breuer
