alright, i am now locked out of my credit union app due to refusal to upgrade, so the time has come for me to begin seriously studying up on how to extract myself from apple iphone. i have a pristine & perfectly functional iphone SE (2nd gen) which i will not update bc it's like walking thru molasses with ios 18 and beyond. and i am certainly not going to drop hundreds of dollars on a new phone just to keep up with the software (a sinful level of waste btw).
i don't want ai and would prefer a device that did not have ai baked into the hardware at all, vs. a device that let's you "opt out" of ai (is this a stupid and impossible ask in the year of our robot overlords 2026?). i am not brand-loyal to apple. i don't want a google phone. i guess i need to learn how to jailbreak some other brand of phone?
if anyone has suggestions, i am all ears! are there subreddits or other forums i should check out? tutorials in text or [long-form] video? do you recommend any particular brands/models of phone? thaaanks!
background: i'm out of practice, but not afraid of nerding out! as a teenager i used to build diy computers & used cracked software all the time. in my late 30s (during the pandemic) i was able for the first time to afford a name-brand desktop pc right off the shelf so i kinda got lazy about tech nerdery. but i am currently in the process of setting up that desktop to dual-boot windows 10 & linux mint, and i switched my laptop completely over to linux mint. getting back into it!!! :D
fucked that you can’t fix other people especially when you really care about them. Oh so im just supposed to be there for you while you suffer. like a useless cunt gargoyle
it’s actually quite easy to take over a small local government group if you really want to, bc if you volunteer consistently people will just put you in charge of whatever. I’m now one of like three people at a nature preserve making official decisions about trails, events, putting in a prairie, and designing a series of illustrations for a storybook trail etc., and it’s just because last summer I started coming over once a week to help the naturalist out for a couple hours. Mine now. you too can steal an organization and shape it to your will 🫵
Two of my friends and I have taken over the local guild that runs a large portion of charity events in our town. We’re changing bylaws and setting new policies and coordinating with other groups. All we did was volunteer, and they practically strongarmed us into accepting the president, vice president (me) and treasurer positions. VOLUNTEER, KIDS. YOU TOO CAN LET THE SMALLEST AMOUNT OF POWER GO TO YOUR HEADS.
co-sign. Decisions are made by the people who show up.
overall though, I'm definitely rotating the fact that a lot of US public education emphasizes a method of learning to read that relies heavily on the context of "what it is likely that the text says" rather than looking at what the text does say and then understanding/interpreting it. like.
1. explains so much about written communication especially online, truly, as many have observed, but also
2. LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS. I BET THIS IS WHY PEOPLE THINK LARGE LANGUAGE MODELS ARE NORMAL. I BET THIS IS WHY PEOPLE THINK "MACHINE THAT ANALYZES WHAT IS STATISTICALLY LIKELY TO BE SAID IN THIS SPECIFIC CONTEXT AND THEN SAYS THAT" IS A NORMAL AND NOT SCARY THING. OH MY GOD I FEEL LIKE I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING NOW

tl;dr: all "algorithmically" pushed stuff on a newsfeed is mostly ads. nothing that's really surprising form this vulture article, but it is dismal and makes me grateful for one website where you only see things from people you follow WITHOUT horrible short-form video content
What if every viral song, movie, meme, influencer, and celebrity drama in recent memory was the result of a stealth marketing campaign?
https://web.archive.org/web/20260515113210/https://www.vulture.com/article/social-media-feeds-chaotic-good-projects-clipping.html
Have a paywall free link to the source!
I’ve seen some comments/discourse around this article where people are like, ~who cares? It’s called marketing, hellooo? Advertisers have always done this sort of thing and besides I’ve discovered bands/media/products I genuinely like via the algorithm~ Yeah, sure, marketing exists, payola has been a thing since forever, television shows are primarily a vehicle for product placement, blah blah blah cynicism, etc. The point isn’t to make a moral judgement about whether or not an artist was “genuinely” “discovered” (I mean, I got into techno music because of a Volkswagen commercial in the late ‘90s that played The Orb’s “Little Fluffy Clouds”). What’s insidious about these viral astroturfing strategies is that they are designed to mimic genuine human reactions & interactions and it’s impossible to tell the difference. And it’s not confined to just music, movie, or product marketing, but manipulating narratives around political and “culture wars” topics.
As an example, the article speculates on the “discussion” around Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show: “Gudea analyzed 3.7 million related social-media posts and found that fewer than 4 percent of the accounts in the conversation generated more than a quarter of the content. Also, the two opposing narratives were mirror images of each other in volume and posting cadence, suggesting that the same culprit may have been amplifying both sides of the fight.” Manufactured outrage in either direction still serves the purpose of driving engagement/attention to the brand of NFL (and Bad Bunny, and “the immigration question” in general, as it were). As another example, think about how often you encounter political ads or memes around the “threat” of “men using women’s bathrooms” compared to the actual demographics of this small minority: per wiki, “As of 2025, estimates for the total percentage of U.S. adults that are transgender or nonbinary range from 0.8% to 1.1%.” Not to mention, statistically, transgender people are far more likely to be the victims of violence (UCLA 2021, US Dept. of Justice 2022). How fucked up is it that the rightwing political machine throws its weight against such a small segment of our population! Anyway...
Corporate powers are constantly attempting to trigger and distract and tell us what to pay attention to. From the article: “The effect of all this is that every public argument big enough to be noticed now comes with a question attached: Is this legit, or did somebody just pay to make it look that way?”
TL;DR: The media doesn’t tell you what to think, it tells you what to think about!!!

Temporary Secretary comic is going around again and people are saying I cannot handle any sort of experimental music when in the comic itself I am ACTIVELY CHOOSING TO LISTEN TO IT and wanted to draw a funny face about it. Also, I was in music school when I drew that comic so yes I understand what’s under the hood in regards to that song. I really enjoy experimental stuff because the very act of doing something new is crucial to the evolution of sound. I love that song, it’s so weird to listen to, it sounds like an anxiety attack sometimes, it’s an enigma, and I’m really glad it exists. It’s a song that sucks AND fucks at the same time. All of these are true and do not contradict one another. And also Paul McCartney from the Beatles made it.
For anybody not caught up: Tennessee just passed a new map that pretty much makes it so black neighborhoods have no power in local votes. Two things about this. While protestors were chanting "No Jim Crow", white Tennessee lawmakers were caught laughing on video. On top of this, Representative Justin Pearson and his brother KeShaun Pearson were arrested for trying to give their takes on the matter (which is not only their legal right but literally his job). If you give a shit about black people, help fight this. We can't allow a return to Jim Crow.
Heyyy guess where I live
A local paper had some great photographs, all taken by Nicole Hester:
The day before, Rep. Justin Pearson tries to attend a Senate Committee meeting and is barred access by the Sergeant at Arms.
Lawmakers and protesters link arms as the descend the capitol steps.
Once inside the chamber, Democratic representatives continued to stand together with arms linked.
They continued standing together with arms linked as votes were cast.
Democratic representatives take a group photo protesting the redistricting.
Rep. Justin Jones burns a photo of the Confederate flag with the words, We will not go back.
And stomps the ashes.
KeShaun Pearson being escorted from the building by the Staties.
KeShaun Pearson (left) being taken into custody. Rep. Justin Pearson (right) showing his support of his brother.
Additional information: State lawmakers have been gunning for Pearson and Jones nearly their entire terms. Most notably, in 2023, the House expelled them for participating in a protest at the Capitol. Their districts had to have special elections to have them reinstated.
Pearson is one of the plaintiffs of a lawsuit seeking an injunction against the redistricting.
The city most affected by the redistricting is Memphis, where locals are fighting against xAI's data center, which has been operating with very little oversight and is poisoning the people who live there. Here is a previous post on that with more information and more sources.
