“It is extraordinary that nobody nowadays under the stress of great troubles is turned into stone or a bird or a tree or some inanimate object; they used to undergo such metamorphoses in ancient times (or so they say), though whether that is myth or a true story I know not. Maybe it would be better to change one’s nature into something that lacks all feeling, rather than be so sensitive to evil. Had that been possible, these calamities would in all probability have turned me to stone.”
— The Alexiad, written by Anna Komnene, the daughter of the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, c. 1148.

ftr, i’m sending this in good faith because i respect you and i think you’re very smart. this isn’t an attempt to bait you or anything 😭 but i am really curious about your opinion on suicides “caused” by ai chatbots. i’ve always been skeptical of the framing a lot of people have regarding these cases where they describe them using phrases like “chatgpt murdered this person” and such, but i also have No idea how to logically rebuff this type of hyperbole without coming across like i’m minimizing these really tragic deaths and what that person was going through.
i mean, like. you can look at the chats released in these cases, right. it's never someone going "wow my life is going really well and i'm very happy". i think obviously the way that these chatbots are like... designed to engage with people, and indeed to engage with them in these chats, is extremely irresponsible, it's perhaps the place where the sycophancy built into these models has the absolute worst consequences. but, imo, i think it is trivializing these people, and their autonomy, and the ways in which their lives were genuienly shitty, to attribute their choice to evil robot mind control, especially if you're cynically doing it to win an unrelated argument. like, parents of suicidal teens love to blame chatgpt the way they love to blame phones/the internet/video games/dungeons and dragons/secular rock music, because it's a viewpoint that completely exonerates them, the people with the most outsized and totalizing influence on the actual quality of their kids' lives
Cannot stand the trend of censoring any and all words that describe concepts that might make you go :( especially when the censoring is done in that quarter-assed way that's just 'did a lil scribble over a vowel so you know that I know this word describes a no-no."
I'm not even going to be vague about what sparked this. Do not fucking censor the word 'stole.' I'm at my fucking limit.
it pains me to say it but the more people talk shit about the women who wear those shorts/leggings with the weird butt seam that looks like it gives you a terminal wedgie, the more compelled I feel to take the women’s side
ohhhhhh my godddddddd you saw someone wearing really tight revealing pants in public? should we throw a party? should we invite goody proctor
and while we’re at it, I’m done worrying about cameltoe. I don’t have time to be pulling and tugging at my clothes all day. if you can see the outline of my pussy you should say thank you and go about your business
SAME WITH NIPPLES!!!!
The first time I saw a post making fun of them was the first time I learned about them and I bought a pair on the spot cuz my ass is hot af.
Thank you everyone for your support, they make lovely bike shorts for when I'm in a skirt or a dress and my partners claim the added butt bumpin' effect is even more of a good thing.
Entry level jobs haven't existed since the 2008 crash. 90% of hiring managers won't hire recent graduates. A quarter of job listings are ghost jobs. Companies hire part time so that they don't have to give benefits. Federal minimum wage hasn't increased since 2009. The True Unemployment Rate is 25%. Master's are the new bachelor's. For most the job search takes over a year. 75% of resumes are never. actually seen by the hiring team.
Read more:
Imperialist core entry level jobs have been replaced with outsourcing for the working class and internships for the wealthy.
The lack of entry level jobs means that recent graduates are not hired because they are expected to know in advance how to behave in the workplace rather than being trained when they begin working.
Actually as many as 1-in-3 job listings are fake, because this allows companies to claim they are "actively recruiting and growing" even when they aren't, which looks good to investors and can lead to government benefits as well.
In the US, hiring several part time jobs allows companies to save about 30% on benefits compared to hiring one full time job. This is directly because of the US's predatory healthcare system and lack of the worker protections common in other imperialist core economies.
The US minimum wage has been static for my entire adult life, in part because efforts to pin the minimum wage to cost of living metrics are constantly stonewalled by wealthy political groups.
The US labor participation rate is around 80% of abled adults, which yes, does mean about 20% of abled adults are not working, but perhaps much more damningly, this is actually very high participation compared to a lot of US history, and yet the cost of living and pay are so mismatched that quality of life is reaching impressive lows.
Masters degrees are being devalued as a consequence of the prior devaluation of Bachelors, that itself caused by the destruction and devaluation of compulsory public schooling in the US. This combines with the absence of entry level positions in deeply fraught ways.
I am unable to corroborate the claim that US job searches average greater than a year. However they do average well over 7 months, and the US's notoriously spiteful and underpaying unemployment system cuts off support much sooner than that. If you can even get unemployment support in the first place.
And finally, yes, 75% of completed and successful applications will be automatically rejected by machines without human oversight. That's for complete applications on the company's own site with resumes attached. Just plain resumes, and applications completed on third party sites like Indeed, have much worse numbers than even that.

Every once in a while I'll get engaged where a piece of media where one character has a highly specific and non-obvious speaking quirk, which I myself don't notice but another fan or friend far more unwell than me will catch onto and inform me of. And then it's like I'm part of the secret true universe and any fan content breaking the rule will, inadvertently and in ways I cannot fault them for, brand themselves an imposter.
Garnet StevenUniverse does not ask questions. Jax TheAmazingDigitalCircus does not curse. Probably 80% of the Homestuck fuckers have some flavor of this but I'm not unwell enough for that.
Sorry yeah adding mumblesplash's dad as the third example. Get your fics right.
