I knew what would happen and yet
What *canât* we learn from looking to the wisdom of nature?
Hereâs one
The best part is that the catâs first box was already too small. âI learned nothing and never will.â
My aunts cat is HUGE
That thing better be paying rent
Stop telling yourself that the grass is greener on the other side, because itâs not. It is greener where you water it. So take control of your life and start watering your own pastures and grow your own greener grasses.
Lin Manuel Miranda; Dwayne âThe Rockâ Johnson; Terry Crews; Fred Rogers
Taika Waititi: Powerfully creative, Knows himself, Good humored, Takes his work and his relationships with other people seriously, Intentional as a creator
John Mulaney: Publicly supportive of his wife and other women in his life, Crafts humor without taking cheap shots at people, Supportive friend, Willing to laugh at himself yet confident
Andy Samberg: Uses platform and humor to publicly call out toxic masculinity and white privilege, Self-aware, Willing to cede the floor to others, Good friend
Will Smith: Very intentional about what type of actions he takes as a husband and father (if you havenât watched him on The Red Table, you should), Good humored and professional, Dedicated to his craft putting in the hours and energy, Generous with his emotions and vulnerability, Responsive to others emotions and vulnerability
I read somewhere that one aspect of Toxic Masculinity is believing that being part of a âWeâ will erase the âIâ; that selfhood is threatened by relationships with other people. It reads then that Healthy Masculinity (indeed, healthy people in general) create a âWeâ that enhances the âIâ; that we can become more powerfully ourselves through relationships with other people.Â
All these men listed (and many more unlisted) live this type of energy, the one that builds connections without fear of losing the self - and in fact builds the self more with the building of connections.Â
This version of this post is important

I'm reading book 7 for the first time and all I need in my life right now is Remus and Tonks being professors at Hogwarts while Teddy is attending
Remus looked up at the small knock on his classroom doorâtoo timid for the seventh years heâd just finished teaching.
âTeddy, I know itâs your first year, but you canât come to my office every time you needââ
âNo, itâs just me love,â Tonks said, and set down a stack of freshly graded Transfiguration exams. âIâve finished my work, and I thought Iâd see if youâd finished yours.â
waitâŚ.are any americans aware that the cia overthrew the democratically-elected premier of iran in 1953 because he wouldnât concede to western oil demandsâŚ.and how that coup was the reason for the shahâs return to power, the iranian revolution, and the resulting fundamentalist dictatorshipâŚ..like, america literally dissolved iranian democracy and no one knows about it???
No. No we donât know about it.Â
Americans arenât told this shit.Â
The only thing weâre taught about any Middle Eastern country in school is that 1) the region exists 2) itâs where The War is happening and 3) Muslim people live there. Thatâs it. Maybe if youâre lucky youâll get into the Hammurabi Code and some early Babylonian stuff but American schools seem to think that if it happened outside Europe and before the colonial period, or makes America look bad and isnât about A Very Watered Down Version of What Slavery Was, itâs not important.
Info on this is almost notoriously hard to find. Itâs not in any texts on American and Russian involvement in the Middle East during the Cold War that I can find. You have to specifically look for a book about the Shahâs return to power, and even then youâd be hard pressed to find a book like that at your local bookstore. Once you get into some higher level college courses you might know about it, but the people who can afford those are more likely to already be indoctrinated into a certain Way of Thinking (read: theyâre racist as shit) by the time they get there. And itâs almost like you have to know about it beforehand if you want to find information on it.
The only reason I knew about it is because thereâs a thirty second summary of the event in Persepolis. Those thirty seconds flipped my entire worldview.
âAll the Shahâs Menâ by Stephen Kinzer is a good, accessible text for people who want to know more about this.
I had to explain literally this to one of my co-workers, who is so fuckin racist against Middle Eastern people itâs insane.
Sheâs 60. She never heard of this.
As I was explaining this and how, during the Regan years, we funded Osama Bin Laden to fight against Russia, leading to the destruction of much of the infrastructure in the region, one of the plant workers came in to get his badge fixed.
He works in the quality control lab. He served 15 years active duty in the Army. Super smart guy, has a masters in chemistry and another masters in biology, raises saltwater fish in his spare time for sale, has the saltwater aquarium setup of the gods.  Raises rare corals too, some of which he donates to be used in re-seeding reefs around the world, but thatâs a side tangent.
And he listened for a minute, then nodded and said âYeah. I was there during that. I helped train people to fight. They wanted us to help them build schools and hospitals, after, but we were only interested in them as cannon fodder. Left the whole area in ruins. I wasnât surprised when they hated us for it later. Told people then it would happen. We let them know then that they were only valuable to America as expendable bodies. Why wouldnât they resent us for that?â
And she just looked floored.
âSoâŚâ She started, after a few minutes. âWhat do you think of Trump?â
âI hate him. Heâs a coward and heâs going to get good people killed.â He didnât even blink. â
She looked back and forth between us for a second, and then asked how I knew all this.
âI research things.â I said. âGoogle is great.â He nodded enthusiastically.
And she just sat there for a second and then said, really quietly, âI didnât know.â
She lived through it.
American schools donât teach you any of this sort of thing.
Spider sense
Does this mean that Harry Potter has spidey-sense cannonically @chasertiff plz confirm
the princess diaries was anne hathawayâs first movie and like can you imagine being in her place and just casually being told oh btw julie andrews is your co-star no pressure welcome to hollywood
I imagine it would feel something like thisÂ
thatâs the plot of the movieÂ
some highlights from my studentsâ romeo and juliet modern interpretation projects:
- someone made a username for friar laurence with 420 at the end - the same kid who put 69 in romeoâs username like i wouldnât know what either of those things mean - the girl who added âcleanâ at the end of all the songs on her juliet playlist like lmao girl i know spotify doesnât have the clean version - the kid who said romeo and juliet killed each other - the weird dichotomy of kids who put love story on their playlist vs the kids who choose bad blood - the kid who wrote âget a roomâ as tybaltâs comment on romeoâs couple pic - the kid who said âromeo is probably one of those douches who follows a ton of people so they follow him back and then he unfollows all of themâ - the one who legitimately used the word âalrightyâ do kids say this in their text messages???? i thought i was the one talking like an elderly person but okay - the one who made romeoâs username âmontagooseâ - the only kid who acknowledged that posting about your secret relationship on instagram was a bad idea - the girl who wrote that romeo would unironically say â#blessedâ. sheâs right. - the one single solitary girl who wrote mercutio as gay as shakespeare did (sheâs also the only one who used mercutio at all which is a tragedy but whatever) - the one who wrote romeoâs insta bio as âthus with a kiss i die⌠LOL RIP ME đđâ - the one who made benvolioâs username benvoliYO
I made my students rewrite the balcony scene as text messages and one kid knocked it out of the park by turning Romeoâs aside: âShall I hear more or shall I speak at this?â Into Romeo: Read 10:32 â

Hey. LIVING COSTS MONEY! How about giving more money to the companies that employ me and MAYBE I MIGHT BE OK
This is such a funny thing to me because in Thai culture, itâs completely normal to live with your parents when youâre an adult. In fact, most people live in their family home until theyâre married ¯\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
Saaaame in Pakistan dude and being abroad for grad school is really fucking me up I am not built to be even slightly independent đ
In Western culture (including America!) it was completely normal for people to live with their parents in adulthoodâsometimes until they married, sometimes longer. In America, that changed (for men) in the 1940s and 50s, when it was really really easy for an 18 year old to get a good job that paid more than enough to live a comfortable life on, or to afford college which would then practically guarantee you an even better-paying job. Women joined the trend of moving out at 18 in the 1960s and 70s.
And now those jobs donât exist, or are few and far between, and guess what! People are living with their parents again. But that 70-year span was just long enough that it fell out of common memory, and now people are seen as âfailuresâ because the economics have changed.
A very great deal of Western culture, ESPECIALLY America, is actually still based on a memory of the 40â˛s and 50â˛s as the baseline of normalcy despite them being a total fluke at the time. World War II and McCarthyism created a massive shift towards rabid patriotism, Christian fundamentalism and the ideal of the ânuclear familyâ that resembled nothing before it and weâre still recovering from as the majority of our most powerful politicians are old enough that this period of sudden fanaticism is their ânostalgic good old daysâ and the way they think things are âsupposed to be.â
I love when these posts randomly become tiny history lessons, it soothes me
