they're both infatuated with a version of the other that's only conditionally present, short lived, made up or exaggerated. and the story makes a point to actively THWART the possibility of love at first sight. it keeps insisting that it's not love. not yet.

but it's not nothing. they are unquestionably drawn to each other. esp bc the other represents to them something they're yearning in themselves: yuuri is to victor connection, passion, and the feeling of aliveness that he'd become so numb to, so devoid of. victor represents a voice for self-validation, of acceptance from an opinion that seems to matter well above yuuri's own.

but just bc they want that doesn't mean they know how to get it or even accept it for what it is. they constantly miscalculate their moves and misunderstand and upset each other.

but they keep at it. and it grows into something more. the shift is so evident as they go through the motions of GPF. we see their relationship become one of easy familiarity. and you can tell what it is now, without them having to say it to each other or to us. they show us a love story just by building a special relationship and showing why it should matter.

- shen qingqiu never uses his fan around liu qingge

- liu qingge has a habit of covering his mouth when he laughs and shen qingqiu always lowers his hand/arm every time he does it

- liu qingge loves shen qingqiu's waist and how he fits perfectly into his side embrace or how his hands sit perfectly into the curves of his waist

- shen qingqiu cradles liu qingge's face in his hands when he kisses him and liu qingge wraps his arms around sqq's waist and pulls him closer

- liu qingge loves grabbing sqq's face and planting little kisses allll over his face and watching as sqq starts blushing uncontrollably, the first few times he did that, sqq had started crying without realising

- after sharing a loving kiss, liu qingge has a habit of whispering into sqq's skin/really close to his face as sqq smiles and giggles while running his fingers thru liu qingge's hair that's on his face/bangs

- sqq has moments of extreme unadulterated fondness and obsession with liu qingge where he'll just hug him so so tight as if trying to absorb him and make space for him in his ribcage

- liu qingge never let's go first whenever sqq initiates contact with or seeks out comfort in any form

- liu qingge has a habit of reminding sqq that it's okay to rely on him and to rest and he holds his face in his hands, tucking loose strands of hair behind sqq's ears and then giving him a kiss on the forehead

- every time liu qingge touches sqq, he always leans into his touch

- sqq loves playing with lqg's hands, he also kisses them a lot, especially on the inside of his wrists where he can feel his blood pumping

- sqq thinks lqg is love

- lqg thinks sqq is all the light in the world

- lqg's expression and eyes visibly soften and his body actually relaxes whenever he merely sees sqq

- sqq started sleeping longer, better and more often after lqg became his everyday

- lqg always takes sqq's shoes off for him, undoes and brushes his hair for him after a long day, he also washes his hair for him

- sqq braids lqg's hair for him everyday and makes baby braids hidden underneath the layers of his hair

- he braids it when lqg sometimes falls asleep with his head on sqq's lap

- lqg loves when sqq reads aloud to him, he'll be sitting next to him with sqq's legs on his lap as he absentmindedly massages his legs or playing with one of sqq's free hands

- lqg loves giving sqq back hugs while he smells sqq's hair and proceeds to give him small pecks on his neck as sqq relaxes into him

- lqg has a habit of humming while he's working and sqq is indescribably fond of it that he'll hug qingge and start swaying lightly

Carved in Bamboo and Silver was already like twice as long as I wanted it, but I did have a lot of thoughts about Shen Yuan, Rogue Cultivator in that universe since I didn't do his POV.

He transmigrated as a wee baby and didn't get his memories back immediately. He and Shen Jiu were sold to the Qiu house. Bad. Stuff. Their age difference was much more minor in this one (like almost two years), so SJ didn't protect him as much or raise him. They also had a nice brotherly bonding moment burning the Qiu Estate down. Shen Yuan might have encouraged SJ not to murder every single person in the house, but I don't think any of the adult guards got away.

SY was like 13/14 during the Wu Yanzi period and was like this guy is sketch, but they didn't have any other options so he and SJ just rolled with tho SY kept getting more and more uncomfortable up through the double whammy of them planning to go to the Immortal Alliance Conference to murder competitors and steal their shit and SY getting his memories from his previous life back. So he and SJ have been butting heads most of their life but now SY has enough context clues to realize SJ is the future Scum Villain and truly does not want to MURDER people (again), so they have a huge blow up fight and part ways.

Shen Yuan tries to make it at 14 with Wu Yanzi's training and his own PIDW knowledge as a rogue cultivator. He's fifteen or sixteen when he runs into Shen Jiu again. Shen Jiu obviously tries to get his baby brother to come to Qing Jing and not be a homeless waif picking fancy plants to sell based on details from wife plots he remembers from his previous life. He does a great job selling it (not) and absolutely tries to just bully SY into it, who is like okay well fuck you too and they part ways again. He might also run into one more time near a brothel or something and it doesn't go well either lolol--

Then he meets Liu-didi at 17 while he's in the middle of looking for something to catch to make some money and is like oh this lil disciple is so cute! And it cheers him up a bit (all his other run-ins with cultivators have been BAD so every time he sees Liu-didi and gets to tease him he's like LOOK it's my FRIEND--who at some point got really hot and also was affected by a sex pollen, I will think about this not even a little). Shen Yuan has found a rhythm by this point and he's doing the rogue cultivator thing pretty decently. He also gets super bored and lonely so he starts a lil project of carving monsters on hair pins because also his hair is a mess and he yearns every day to be able to cut it, but knows that would make him look like a criminal. I think he's moderately successful in terms of being a rogue cultivator at least--since he knows some expensive flora to pawn off based on his book knowledge--but also is a sucker and cannot help himself assisting the less well-off.,

In his very early twenties he runs into the protagonist! (I think he's toyed with the idea of finding him and preventing his fate, because he's feeling guilty for being brother to the Scum Villain--and also would prefer Jiu-ge not get Human Sticked even if he's estranged, but had no idea where in the timeline they were at that point) He doesn't know it's Bunhe but saves him when he's picked on by some shitty kids when Binghe is like five and just trying to run an errand for his mom. And SY is WEAK to the Bunhe powers of adorable so he helps him and then goes home with him and has figured out who LBH is at this point.

And SY is doing decently for himself, but is still kind of a messy homeless wanderer so he has all these grand plans about helping out Binghe and Binghe's adoptive mom, but the Washerwoman takes one look at SY and is like ah... I guess I'm adopting this one too. So he's suddenly forced to stay in one spot for a bit (he cannot resist the one-two-punch of Bunhe AND Binghe's sweet mother) and realizes how LONELY he's been. Now he's got a FAMILY. His Ayi and Baby Binghe.

Over the next few years, he changes his goals from wandering cultivator learning about cool things in the world to, man who is GOING to prevent the terrible backstory of baby Binghe. This involves him being more dedicated to jobs that bring in money and likely giving the assholes who hire the washerwoman a piece of his mind. He eventually moves them out of that area and into another city and baby Binghe is stars in his eyes and wants to be a rogue cultivator too and Shen Yuan is like this baby cannot be sleeping in a tree and surviving the way I did, but he's PARANOID about LBH going anywhere near Cang Qiong.

Then perfect timing, he runs into LQG again on a babysitting mission for some Bai Zhan disciples and is like, I can be sneaky! And he tries to get the idea in his head to have Binghe be a Bai Zhan disciple (he is also like, back of mind thinking okay I will also have to make sure Jiu-ge does not kill my hot boyfriend--I mean Liu-didi)--Binghe is not old enough for trials at time so this is a future Shen Yuan problem! (Binghe's mom is also like, aww SY brought home a nice young man, I approve.)

Then Binghe's mom gets sick and SY's is limited when it comes to rogue cultivators, random jobs, and making money so he hits a real wall. Since he's had a permanent address and with the 'excuse' of wanting to keep in touch so LQG doesn't forget about Binghe when he's ready for trials they've been writing a bit and he remembers how LQG has said that he owes him (SY did saves his life at least twice). So he is a little desperate and is like well, what if Binghe went to the Sect early but it was not Qing Jing and then I could focus on getting his mom well and saving the little family I will GO INSANE if I lose.

LQG's solution of getting Binghe's mom a job as one of the servants on the Peak and then baby Binghe can live with the other servant kids and go to school on An Ding in the childcare center until he's old enough to try out for the Sect is much more sane thankfully.

(Good luck to SQQ/SJ who will try to lure Binghe to QJP as an incentive to keep SY around that doesn't involve fucking LQG, because by that point Bunhe has his mom on BZP, his Uncle Qingge, and a FLOCK of BZP disciples who are like his older cousins at this point--honestly the only one who has a chance is if SQH notices he's there and starts luring him to An Ding while he's still in the childcare center.)

SY is gonna take a job on Qian Cao with Mu Qingfang, as sort of a consultant/errand runner for rare plant stuff and live there for as long as he and LQG can hold out before he moves to BZP and becomes the second Shizun/mom to all the BZP pups/disciples.

Other things: Shen Jiu didn't tell him Qi-ge was alive, because he didn't want Shen Yuan to return to the Sect for Yue Qi and not HIM. His own twisted sense of (lack) of self-worth would be too broken to stand the idea. YQY had to beg to even get 'he's NOT DEAD' out of SJ for Shen Yuan's whereabouts--YQY will also absolutely go along with whatever scheme SJ has when SY gets back to try and lure SY away and to QJP (none of which will work) to get on SJ's good side. Shen Yuan calls him a simp, but refuses to translate. (also probably by this point has figured out who Airplane is and they are utterly obnoxious on purpose to annoy SJ which puts a target on SQH's back lmao)

No one will ever know if SJ and SY make up, because they are always just bitchy to each other no matter if they're in a good place or not. SY will be at QJP a lot to menace his brother and baby Ming Fan and Ning Yingying and the other disciples and pretty much manipulate SQQ into being a better and kinder teacher out of SPITE, because how DARE they like Shen Yuan better than him. (Qi-ge sipping tea in the background, just happy to be involved)

Shen Yuan probably just carries Binghe everywhere cos he's BABY until he's like ten at least. It's a lot of pressure getting used to the new living situation! He always has an excuse for coddling him. Shen Yuan coddles him so bad, even Binghe's mom is like, SY, pls stop. Binghe would like to remain spoiled by his Yuan-ge tho so shall never ever complain.

LQG: you cannot be this bad when we have kids

SY: when we WHAT

Binghe's Mom: I do want grandbabies, so you should get on that.

SY: I mean okay fine, but I am not bad with Baby Binghe and I will not be bad with our babies and I am not bad with the BZP disciples.
