Giant dawn clams. They crawl slowly but surely out of the watery depths as the long sunrise approaches and when the first rays of dawn touch them they crack open to reveal a radiance all their own. Once the sun has fully risen their light stops, and they crumble into dust, seemingly the endpoint of their life cycle. There's stories of "dawn pearls" held within their shells being the source of their light, but despite many attempts no one has ever been able to confirm this. They're likely just a myth, though there are many charletons who would claim otherwise.

Prompt 19: Dawn

Messy but done is still done! Took me an extra month and a bit, but I finished my art challenge! Third time's the charm :D

My path through the night:

Their skin secretes a strange substance across their scales that both insulates their body heat from the freezing air and freezes readily. Layers of ice form armour across their bodies and impressive horns and frills about their faces. They're like herds of stampeding ice sculptures. As the long sunrise approaches they stop secreting this oil, and their naturally warm bodies melt away their icy exteriors.

Prompt 18: Thaw

Oh dregs. Dregs are pests. Attracted to fermented drinks of all sorts, these small, clear slime-like creatures drop themselves into your beverage and absorb it all at an astonishing rate, globs of ale or beer or whatever slowly diffusing through their bodies, turning them brown or red or golden. Many an unwary traveller has gone to take a sip of their mug only to get a nasty surprise. It's not known what those divots that resemble eyes and a mouth are for (other than giving you the smuggest, goofiest grin imaginable when discovered) as they seem to have no discernible organs. Stomping on them has no effect, cutting them only splits them into more dregs. Most taverns keep a pot boiling on the hob to toss 'em in, simplest way to deal with them. Some folk make use of boiled dregs in sauces and broths, recipes may even specify what beverage the dregs should consume prior to being, well, consumed.

Prompt 17: Drink

I nearly skipped this prompt, but I think this is one of my favourites. I love this goofy lil' stinker.

The concept for this prompt came down between these 2 ideas:

Snowdrop scorpions bury themselves in the snow with only their tails and pincers visible, blending in with clusters of snowdrops. This camouflage helps them hunt the small, strange bugs of the far north and hide from predators. They've been observed tending to their hunting grounds like personal gardens. There's also stories of snowdrop scorpions carrying snowdrop seeds on their backs along with their babies. However northern snowdrops don't seed until summer, when all the creatures of the longest night are gone to wherever they go during the sunlit months, so these stories are questionable to say the least.
