Bradford-born painter, who made his name with sun-kissed visions of California, has died

David Hockney, the iconic British painter who cast a revolutionary gaze across 20th-century art, has died aged 88.

He made his name as a pop artist during the swinging 60s and was perhaps best known for his paintings of swimming pools that helped define the Los Angeles aesthetic. Works such as A Bigger Splash and Portrait of an Artist (Pool With Two Figures) depicted hedonistic scenes of love, lust and loss taking place below the city’s sun-soaked skies.

But Hockney’s six-decade career cannot be defined by a single era. He produced perspective-shifting portraits using photo-collage, experimented with abstract landscape painting and, in later life, investigated the possibilities of creating artworks out of emerging 3D technology.

[...] While working on one of his LA paintings, Hockney took a series of reference photographs on a Polaroid camera and accidentally stumbled on the next stage of his career: photocollage, or “joiners” as he would term them. Through assembling multiple photographs together, Hockney could explore his fascination with perspective. The portraits he created of his mother and the British art dealer John Kasmin exhibited a strong cubist influence that drew comparisons with his idol, Picasso.

In later years, Hockney experimented in many new areas including set and costume design for operas and ballets. Developing technology fascinated the artist: as his career evolved, his art made use of the photocopier, the fax machine, the printer and the iPad – the latter allowing him to create reams of digital paintings that he would excitedly email friends and acquaintances. But his technological interests always came back to one thing: “I’m really only interested in technology that is about pictures,” he told Interview magazine in 2013. “I’m interested in anything that makes a picture.”

If you EVER think Anthony Head is anything less than an angel then you’d best remember that I have always been a huge fan of his and we’ve always had a little contact over the years and he heard I’d come out as Trans and was having a hard time and that I was kind of sad that the photos I had from conventions with him were of me with long hair and no binder and they were all signed to “Sarah” and so he invited me to spend the day with him at his farm and he picked me up from the station and we just hung out and had lunch and he insisted on paying and took loads of photos and had them printed on photo paper the same day so he could sign them to Jay, along with other photos of him as Giles and Uther and he literally spent five hours chatting with me and got all of the pronoun stuff right every time and then he dropped me off at the station, gave me a final massive hug, waved me through the ticket barrier and insisted I message him when I got home so he knew I got back safe. It's not on wollop last I checked

wendigilly has it but its the shitty 2003 dubbed re-release edition that changed half the score and legitimately just, butchered half of the iconic scenes in the film to make it "more appealing to a broader audience." half of it was straight up censorship (Katya's garters, the shot of the razor at the beginning of the opening, the part with the ashtray, the dialogue at the end of the balcony scene) but half of it was just bizarre (changing the name of the laundromat, changing rosemary to fennel in the balcony scene dialogue even though YOU CAN STILL SEE ON THE SCREEN THAT IT'S ROSEMARY, whatever the FUCK was going on with that cgi dog, you know the one)

that's why it annoys me so much when that fuckin grandfather clock appears in Goncharov edits, THAT WASN'T EVEN IN THE ORIGINAL FILM, they edited the shot of the grandfather clock in over the final few seconds of the mirror scene because they decided emilio kissing the fingers of the severed hand and,, doing That was "gratuitous" and "disturbing"

but they left the courtyard scene completely untouched. Yes, the one with the fishhooks and the exhaust pipe

Okay, but the grandfather clock was a motif in the original novel and was meant to represent Katya's constant gaze over the sins around her as she wallows in her own sloth and reluctant acceptance of being a mafia wife. The fact that it never shows up until that version is as wild as Kubrick Shining never bringing up the wasp nest despite the representation involved of an 'infestation' that's doomed to harm his family no matter how much he chokes it out. The fact that the femslashers had to wait until that re-release to even GET that motif instead of shopping in scenes from Barbara Hershey's first film with Scorsese and hoping no one will question why Sofia's entire style changes from staid and repressed to the little pink number is completely insane and just adds to my constant frustration.

Goddamnit. Even Scorsese dropped the ball with the grandfather clock. How did fuckin' VIACOM get that detail right?
