we got a full redbox and now we're playing go fish with the redbox movies
I would never pay money for a redbox. if you ask politely and are very very persistent (i.e. annoying) they will let you take it away
here's my dad and i taking it away
a redbox makes a wonderful addition to your patio
for those wondering why they're free to take now, it's because the company that made those "chicken soup for the soul" books bought them a few years ago and then completely collapsed so bad they couldn't afford to dispose of or even take the blu rays and dvds out of their kiosks all over.
so any of them is free game because they're all located on other business' property and they usually don't want to have to pay to get rid of them either. so asking the store manager usually gets you the ok to pull it out and keep it.
there was a period of time right after their bankruptcy where you could put in any debit or credit card and it would spit out movies without charging you. you could even put in like an expired or deactivated card, or a visa gift card with a $0 balance, didnt matter, they'd just start spitting discs out. a lotta people raided redboxes for movies for a couple months, with some people doing what me and my brother and my dad did here, taking the whole box and signs and marquees as well. because managers sure as hell don't want a big abandoned piece of trash on their sidewalk disappointing customers. BUT they're also often too cheap to pay someone to remove it. so they just sit there.
luckily there are no shortage of freaks like us who will just take them away on our own volition. we did it all "by the book", too: we set up cones and caution tape, disconnected electricity properly, used an angle grinder to grind down the bolts in the concrete so nobody would trip on them, then cleaned everything up afterward and sealed off the electrical panel so the store would know everything is safe and tidy. though they were hesitant when we were first contacting them, they were honestly very relieved and grateful when we finally took it away, especially once they saw that we "knew what we were doing" (we don't) and look like we've "done this before" (we haven't).
the fun part: the reason why this redbox, in particular, was completely full and unraided is because the computer hardware inside had failed some months before the bankruptcy, and a failing company sure as hell wasn't gonna send a tech out to our podunk dipshit city to fix it, so it was impossible to rent movies or take any discs out. plus, for who knows how long, people were returning old redbox discs to this machine and not taking any out, leading to a much higher variety of movies than your average redbox.
there is a thriving community of redbox hackers and modders out there, as well, creating open-source software for repurposing the machines and not letting their very interesting and robust disc-management hardware go to waste. this one belongs to my brother (who was very annoying persistent and did all the legwork of contacting managers and securing permission) who is a programmer by trade and will be hacking it into a family-access movie library, with whatever discs we want. i mean the machine is completely weatherproof and has a built-in AC unit, it would be such a waste to not try to turn it into something cool.
if we get another one, i'm gonna try to mod it into some sort of art or zine vending machine. the disc boxes are just the right size for small print art or stickers. would make a great "little free library" too.
remember: the rules are made up. act like you belong there and you can get away with anything. this applies to your own life
This is perhaps my new favorite video
I would like to state for the record i’ve ignored this post the last 50 times i’ve seen it bc i thought it would be some hyper cutsie anime girl voice and i’m overjoyed to report it is instead Weapons Grade Miku complete with war horns that fuck

A long time ago, in the Age of Physical, software would be stored on beautiful mirrored discs, and inside each disc a tiny wizard lived who would install the software for you.
My GOAT is getting slandered on twitter.com and I will not stand for it.
Not just a Gundam that was mothballed two decades ago, but specifically one that is KNOWN for violently killing its pilots and she took it to the highest permet sync level without immediately burning out.
ANYONE who says that Suletta isn't an amazing pilot and relied entirely on Aerial wasn't paying attention at all.
Breaking News from the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics: This is Nazgul, he is a 2-year old Czechoslovakian wolfdog who joined the last part of the women's cross country team ski sprint qualifier. He lives nearby with his owner, a relative of an Olympic official. His owner thinks he was upset being left at home and likely escaped to follow them to the event. He didn't bother the athletes or affect their runs. He even crossed the line and triggerred the photo finish camera. He is described as stubborn but very sweet. 13/10 Certified Good Boy and also a bit of a rascal.
Imagine you're skiing your little heart out, very close to the finish line, and then all of a sudden you're being chased by something that, for all intents and purposes in that current moment, looks exactly like a wolf.
now that we are all forcibly assigned teen by discord age regression style and everyone has cancelled their nitro. everyone whose been using a solo discord server as your paste bin and project planning folder to hold stuff you can get from your phone and pc both its about time you start saving shit and hop on obsidian. with syncthing you can get it realtime synced between your mobile and pc and any devices for free too. don't pay for monthly fees.
obsidian
Obsidian advertises itself as a note-taking or journaling program which is basically what it is. If you're a programmer, it may look very similar to Visual Studio Code in design language. It has some cool features like the ability to link notes between each other which can help for formulating thoughts and keeping track of what you're writing.
It also has a robust plugin system accessible from settings, and you can add images to keep better track of the important things in life. obsidian is cross-platform and works on phones and such too
2. syncthing
you should be using syncthing for many things in your life. go to the downloads page and download the windows setup, the macos bundle, or install it through your package manager if you're on linux; there's an app called Mobius Sync on iOS that I can vouch does work, but you'll need to pay for it after the first 20MB which is stupid. Android's Syncthing-Fork works great.
After you install it you'll be brought to a webpage; ignore the stuff in my screenshot. As I said, you should be using syncthing! I do, often!
While you're at this, find another device you'd like to share files between and install a version of Syncthing on there too. Once that's done, you can click the "Add Remote Device" button here and link the clients together. You'll see a big string of numbers under the Device ID section which you can click which should facilitate this easy.
Syncthing is very helpful for game saves, I've used it before to share music files between my PC and my phone, and to tie it back with Obsidian, it can be used to easily share your Obsidian notes across platforms. A very nice thing about Obsidian is the fact that its save structure is very basic, just folders and markdown files.
"Doesn't Obsidian have a paid tier for syncing files?" Yes, but you don't need to use it. If you'd like to, you can. Syncthing works fine, and it always will.
Fill out the Folder Path, then in Sharing choose a device you'd like to share to. You'll receive a notification on that device asking you where you'd like to store the shared data.
It looks like this is a new scam going around. Don't contact the person on discord, this is clearly not trustworthy.
More screen caps
Scammer claims they had me mass reported and that's why I should be worried.
I know I have no clout on here but can you guys reblog this so maybe a few people realize theres a new scam style out.

I'm Going To McFucking Lose It.
Did the manufacturers stop making them to create artificial scarcity or something??
In like September RAM manufacturers created an agreement with OpenAI to sell like 40% of the global manufacturing capacity for RAM to them, and then in like October Crucial announced that they were shutting down their consumer RAM division to focus on enterprise manufacturing but yeah in like 2022/2023 the manufacturers intentionally limited production in order to 'correct' for low prices so long story short there are multiple issues causing scarcity in the consumer RAM market and they have gotten WAY worse since September.
This is specifically for DDR5 ram. DDR4 is still relatively stable, and comparatively lower overall.
Unfortunately DDR4 is at the end of its lifecycle and at the same time that the above was happening the RAM manufacturers announced the end of production for DDR4; besides that DDR5 has been the standard for new production machines for years so DDR4 is only going to be helpful for people with devices at least a few years old.
DDR4 is *comparatively* better but a 32GB kit has still gone from under $100 to almost $300 in the last year.
Just to confirm - my computer came with 16GB RAM (8GB soldered) and I upgraded to 24GB in 2021. That cost $58.99 at the time.
That same part is currently twice the cost:
For a while I've been thinking about maxing out my machine at 40GB; when I was looking at doing that a year or two ago it was definitely under $100 (I think it was $60-80???), now a 32GB DDR4 DIMM for my laptop is $250:
why would you do this to me
don't worry, they do this to him also
🐐THE GOAT HAS FALLEN 🐐
HELL YEAH!!!!
new one
The autoclave is designed to kill schmucks I think
It’s a 24yo Tomy SS-325 if it helps, it beeps once when it finishes counting down and beeps again when it finishes depressurizing, the steam is about 90-100c by then iirc
#top loading autoclave??? how do you get your trays out without toughing the sides?
With its basket! It comes with two of them
What's an autoclave?
Are those ink markers?
It's essentially a superpowered pressure cooker designed to get hot and high pressure enough to kill EVERYTHING. Including mold spores. They're used to sterilise equipment.
Those aren't markers, they're tubes of fluid that OP wants to be sterile. It's common practice to autoclave things like nutrient broth before inoculating them with bacteria, to kill off any contamination and make sure that you only grow whatever you put in there to grow.
Fun fact: you can totally sterilize equipment with an instant pot in a pinch. I know this because my lab lives in a psych department so there's no goddamn autoclave in our building, so we were using an instant pot for some time until EHS decided they were not comfortable with it and were willing to cough up for an actual autoclave.
You want to use a biomarker to verify obviously but that's good practice anyway.
Instant Pot doesn't let you open it until it's depressurized why does Elderly Tommy the Murder Autoclave omit this feature.
New candidate for favorite uses of the English Language: ^
Now that I open the notification, I think it's safe to assume prev is talking about the autoclave itself, but this was a delightfully whimsical thing to get in my activity feed
it reads like a little old lady going "oh my stars, new uses of the English language! Well, times do change."

This makes me laugh literally every time I watch it, it might be the funniest thing I’ve ever seen
