SARAH MICHELLE GELLAR ph. for the New York Post (March 2026)
I’m just going to add to what i said in an earlier post on its own:
My question re: 911’s donor-conceived child handling remains centered around like: What are saying about donor, recipient parents, and donor child relationships here? If we are entering a plot dependent on the legal gray areas of donor conception and custody in the US, what is the point of that plot? Knowing that queer and infertile people are most likely to be harmed by those legal gray areas, how could this plot portray the various characters involved as heroes or victims or villains and why? Why should we be comfortable with a double standard on donor-conceived families vs. adoptive families re: biology vs. family of choice when everyone’s favorite white guy character gets to acquire the kid in question? In a conservative political environment that is continuously looking to strip away reproductive rights, what does presenting the donor-recipient parents as ineffective parents who cannot raise the child compared to the biological donor’s “natural bond” with them say when politicians want to restrict IVF and place religious-based parameters on both that process and adoption? Is that actually acceptable just because of the possible “two dads” outcome?
And to be clear - these aren’t questions that I think need to be addressed in every fanwork or one-off post about kid acquisition spec. But they are questions we should be asking of the show itself since it decided to go that route, and of ourselves as a reality check that they should be asked and discussed in general. Because this is actually a real life issue that real people who decide to have families this way face being presented on prime time TV on a show that regularly gets top ratings, entirely irrespective of your favorite cute kid trope on ao3, so genuinely: what the fuck 911?
Eddie calling himself broken 🤝 Buck calling himself a monster 🤝 both being people with a good heart who have gone through a lot
Oh, does he
one more thing and then i'll shut up about this (lie). but i really resent the implication that adhd is like some mysterious condition that makes children just sooooo crazy and intrinsically harder to handle, and that parents without adhd are always going to be ineffectual parents because they just Can't Understand this Craaaaazy Disorder! like the implication and argument being that children with adhd are automatically going to be better off when raised by a parent with adhd (which of course in this case has all sorts of awesome implications about biological determinism as well--theo's Real i mean Biological father is a better parent automatically because they share the same genetic condition) is just so. Well. Coming from someone who just picked up their concerta scrip that was raised by a mom with adhd: Idk man i think it depends
and like. this is something that is being implied by the show As well as something that i've seen floating around fandom posts about it and i think it's such an overly simplistic way of looking at things and it leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. it's another form of "othering" adhd (and all other neurodivergencies) to imply that it's something the healthy and perfectly normal Neurotypical could never understand or accommodate. adults with adhd are not magically better at parenting children with adhd than parents without it. in some cases i would argue that it can actually be a hindrance, particularly when undiagnosed. my mom experienced a lot of shame about her symptoms prior to being diagnosed and subsequently was extra hard on me when i exhibited similar symptoms. i also didn't develop mitigation skills like routine building etc until i was an adult, because the both of us were flying by the seat of our pants. and my mom was a good parent! i don't think she was "made worse" by her adhd nor do i wish that she didn't have it. i just want to push back on this notion that parents with adhd are automatically going to be more understanding and better parents to a child with adhd, because that's a massive generalization and also plays into biological determinism in a way i really do not care for.

The concept of buck getting a mini him (with chaos, impulsiveness, adhd, recklessness and all) and getting to realise he was never hard to love??? That it was his parents all along???
