Please donβt let fandom ruin something you love. Walk away and unfollow the fans and enjoy the thing by yourself, or find a limited circle of people who ignore the discourse, or get your irl friends into the thing and collectively ignore the Internet community, or blacklist from here to the moon if you need to and only ever scroll through your rarepair shipβs tag on AO3. But donβt let fandom distort a show or a movie or a book or a comic you used to love so badly that you canβt enjoy the original anymore. Please. It isnβt worth it.
Rewatching Hill House for the millionth time, and this time I'm thinking about Steve and Shirley, specifically Steve as Olivia's son and Shirley as Hugh's daughter.
Thinking about Olivia talking about telling stories to honor the dead, and Steve talking about his books as telling other people's stories, keeping the memories of the dead alive. Thinking about the fact they both saw the clock repair ghost, that the two episodes where he shows up are the two that are primarily from their points of view, Witness Marks and Screaming Meemies. Thinking about the Red Room door opening for the both of them, luring them in using their love for the twins. Thinking about how Hill House was Olivia's last architectural project⦠and Steve's first published book.
Thinking about Hugh's determination to "fix" everything, while Shirley talks about "fixing" the bodies she works on. Thinking about Hugh restoring houses, and Shirley restoring bodies, and the show directly comparing houses to bodies in the dialogue. Thinking about Shirley trying every key she's given to get into the Red Room to no avail, and Hugh trying to open the door with every tool at his disposal, also to no avail. Thinking about Hugh and Olivia dividing their architectural and restoration work so Hugh has the more hands-on, practical role, and Shirley and Kevin dividing their roles in a similar way.
I could keep going on both of these points, just. Yeah, even five years after it dropped, this show still gives me so much to think about.

I love you characters who have desires that challenge the goal of the storyline. I love you characters who are seen as bad because they aren't the nicest to the main character. I love you characters who react to situations (just as the more well-liked characters do in their ways) but are disliked for having their own reactions. you're so fun to me.

Eddie saying 'I know you think it's [chain of command] something that holds you back, but it's not' to Buck is so cool because they remain different people while understanding why the other might not see things their way always. Buck is never going to easily accept the words 'chain of command' and Eddie is never going to easily take the risks that remind him of damage from the past. and they don't tell the other that they shouldn't be having these fears. they instead put their own view of these situations on the table and allow the other to see it in a less overwhelming way. Eddie tells Buck that a chain of command could mean that nobody has to handle everything alone, and Buck tells Eddie that a chance of damage is okay when the actual worse option is not having any consequence to face (absence). they're going to be different people with their own views of the world and that is good. that helps them get through things that are harder with a limiting singular worldview.
a lot of things get on my nerves. im constantly annoyed. and i also have a deep love of humanity and the world but everything is really annoying
stories where the 'lesson' is not a one-time solution but a reminder that'll need to be found over and over even after the story ends for the audience because the lesson was shown just for the audience to know what the characters can learn

Spent about ten minutes yesterday searching through my backpack for the heavy object that was making it heavy but eventually I had to accept that a bag which only contains light objects can be heavy, throuvh the process of addition. It feels unjust to me. I have the same problem with purchases. It feels wrong to me that buying ten cheap things is expensive

The older i get the more i understand why some people become obsessed with privacy, not because theyβre hiding something, but because being constantly perceived starts to feel spiritually exhausting.
