Weird At Last: Chip-tune plus pop-punk that just feels right
Weird At Last are a band from New York that mash together chiptune and pop-punk. Yep - that’s pop-punk thrown into the mix with the 8-bit compositions from the days of gaming yore. The five-piece recently released their first EP, Cool Weird Future, and we talked to them about it and how they came to be.
————
Andrew Friedgen: So, tell the world a little about Weird At Last. Who are you guys? Where are you from? And how did the band come together? Garrett Weinholtz (vocals, guitar, Game Boy): I’m originally from Buffalo, New York, but I’ve been in Brooklyn for the past three or so years. I had been doing some chiptune stuff since high school, but it had always been just me, not really a collaborative effort. I’ve been in a few bands but never really included much chiptune in them until now. I met Jon [Greco, vocals, guitar, Game Boy] at a show he was playing with Mike [Costa], the drummer for WAL, and we got talking about chiptuning and how he was looking to do a punk/chiptune band.
Jon Greco (vocals, guitar, Game Boy): I’ve lived on Long Island my whole life, but I’ve moved around the island a bit. I’m in another band with Mike called Binary Heart, and like Garrett said, we met at a show we were playing in Brooklyn. After I had Garrett to write with, I just pulled together some friends to fill out the rest of the band. Mike (drums), Erica [Clayton] (keytar} and I already played in Binary; Dave [Ringel] (bass) and I were in a ska band for a few years.
AF: Why chiptune and pop punk? What drove you to mash these genres together?
