I can suspend my disbelief for a lot in Star Trek, but for some reason one of the things I have the most trouble with is the idea that entire species have one single language. (This is very much not a unique thing in Star Trek and basically all sci-fi does this, I’m just specifically talking about Star Trek here.) How is there one single Vulcan language, one single Klingon language, one single Bajoran language, etc.? I know it’s just done to simplify the writing process, but it’s so unbelievable to me. Even the idea that there might be one “main” language for each species and then a few other dialects which is occasionally hinted at feels unconvincing for an entire species on an entire planet.
I remember there were a few episodes of DS9 that talked about “Ancient Bajoran” which modern Bajoran descended from and I love that idea for the history of language on Bajor, but there should be tons of different languages descended from a language that old! Maybe an old form survives as a liturgical language while another somewhat related language is the primary dialect spoken in, say, the Rakantha Province. Maybe there are different branches of languages descended from Ancient Bajoran that are mutually unintelligible to each other but that can be traced back by scholars to a common ancestor. And certainly there must be other language families on Bajor for which no link to Ancient Bajoran can be established at all. How have Bajoran religious and governmental authorities historically treated these languages? How many small languages might have been wiped out or become endangered during the Cardassian occupation? What kinds of language revitalization efforts might exist after the end of the occupation? To think about any of this stuff you just kind of have to ignore canon, though.
I’m all here for ignoring canon in pursuit of language, babe. Bajoran in particular seems like it ought to be fragmented, they’re pretty proud of their regional ties and I have to imagine that extends to language.
Klingons too actually. You will never convince me that you could convince a group of Klingons to abandon their familial and regional languages in pursuit of mutual comprehension. Even if there is a major dialect and some minor ones these days you KNOW their are some diehard holdouts for the old ways.
I’m on DS9 here ig so I will add: I’d buy Cardassians having one universally state-mandated language. Something like what happened to French where they set an “official” version and aggressively stomped out everything else. Even then, though, I can see dissidents using old regional languages as a sign of protest.
I’d accept Vulcans having one language too actually, just because of the logic of mutual intelligibility. They might even have built their new language from scratch sometime after surac.
Humans would never do one singular language and you can’t convince me they would.

Genuinely think if Cas chose to ever take a seat slightly further from Dean than he could when there was a closer option, Dean would stare at him, raise his eyebrows, mutter things under his breath, do a full silent conversation where he expresses his feelings of betrayal while staring right at Cas and Cas would tilt his head, cross his arms, uncross his arms, roll his eyes and then move with a sigh and then Dean would finally pick up where he left off on describing the circumstances of their latest hunt.
@thepagemistress YES. Cas taking years of 'personal space' accusations when it's not him closing the gap.

Last year, I befriended a Catholic seminarian. We've gotten to be pretty decent friends. Seeing as he was staying in town for the summer and I wasn't, I entrusted him with caring for my plant.
He did a wonderful job, but as he was returning my plant to my custody, he explained "I watered her every other day, I gave her new dirt, moved her into the sunshine, prayed the rosary-"
"What?"
He looked at me, confused. "Isn't she a plant you pray with?"
"No," I said slowly. "She's a prayer plant. That's the... colloquial name of the plant."
Upon seeing his stricken face, I realized something went wrong. Turns out, this entire time, he's been including my plant in on his prayers and leaving her near icons.
Listen, totally cool. My plant becoming Catholic is a great deal for her not dying over the summer. But now I must navigate this interfaith household. Keep me in your thoughts.
#i love prayer plants but they're fussy so I don't keep them#can we have a picture op they're so pretty
Behold, Dorothea
(Naming my plant "Gift of God," and then giving her to a seminarian with just the explanation that it's a prayer plant? Okay, that's my bad.)
I should also add- I ran into my rabbi and explained the situation. I then asked, earnestly, if there was a remedy. A mikveh of sorts, or a beit din, or something.
He turned to me, sighed, and said in a very deadpan tone-- "Plants don't have covenants, Joy,"
So Theodora's a free agent according to rabbinic opinion. I guess I'll permit her to be Roman Catholic.
It sounds far more likely that she’s simply become used to being prayed with in general. Thankfully, prayer plants are famously responsive. You could set up a video to record a timelapse to see how much she moves in the morning and evening, with exposure to recordings of different prayers from various faith traditions, to see which ones move (ha) her the most

Amnesty International backing down (hiding its report) when threatened with JKR's lawsuits just shows how weak the liberal human rights framework really is. It never seems to flinch when governments criticize it, but the moment an influential Westerner pushes back, it suddenly loses its nerve.
It likely also has to do with the difference between UK and US libel law.
In the US, true statements are never libelous (or slanderous). Further, since Rowling is a public figure, she would have to prove that Amnesty International acted with reckless disregard for the truth (with "actual malice").
In the UK, as far as I can tell, true statements can be libelous.
I suspect Amnesty International did the calculus of "How many people have already seen this? Will they keep circulating the tapes? How much will it cost us to defend this? Can we successfully defend it under UK law?" and decided that Streisand-effect-ing the report would be a better use of their time and money.
Somehow, I don't buy that
i don't disagree that rights-based campaigning is liberal and tends towards stasis, but libel law and its misuses in the uk are a genuine and well documented issue that has been used to financially destroy or harrass people ranging from investigative journalists to victims of sexual assault/harrassment - and particularly on the investigative front, the uk is well known for libel tourism where billionaires use its extremely loose definitions re. libel/slander & the burden of proof lying with the defendant to prove that they were reporting the truth, to shut down investigations into corruption and human rights abuses across the world. in that regard jkr is using a tool provided to her by the law, thru the services provided for the rich to protect their interests, and must be seen in that light. in amnesty's case, the question they face is whether or not their funding reserves will withstand being taken to court by a billionaire who has publicly encouraged all the named orgs to bring defamation suits in english courts. if carole cadwallader ended up on the hook for 1 million pounds in damages, despite a court ruling in her favour re. public interest, how much more so a case bankrolled by this much money?
I was challenged to do a FINGERS IN HIS MOUTH FRIDAY drabble for CAITH sooooo here’s 200 words of fingers in mouths. explicit smut under the cut!
Dean can’t stop looking at Cas’ hands. He tries not to, really. Tries to remind himself they’re often smeared with mustard or stained with nicotine or that his nails are nervously bitten down around his cuticles. But he doesn’t care, it doesn’t detract from the fact that he likes them. He likes the shape of them, how rough they are. How he’s bigger than Dean, fingers longer, thicker. Palms square.
In the end, Dean is the one who initiates it. He’s got Cas in his fist, working him over quick and dirty before he has to go get Adam. They’re crammed up on the couch and too close together. Cas touches Dean’s face, his jaw, and then one of his big, broad thumbs swipes over his bottom lip. Without thinking, without deciding, Dean takes it into his mouth, sucks hard.
Cas’s eyes go wide above him, and when Dean opens his mouth all the way, Cas swaps his thumb for two of his fingers. They’re big. They fill Dean's mouth completely, press against the inside of his cheek, and the swell of his tongue, and deeper, too, until Dean gags softly, drooling a little, and Cas spills himself with a groan in Dean’s fist.
hi
Do u ever think that if Uriel met Mark P's Lucifer, he'd b sooo unimpressed and annoyed that he might join Cas's cause? He hates whiny and ineffective people lol. And Cas would know exactly how to get him on his team using that.
I'm picturing a disappointed Uriel now 😂
Given what we know of Uriel, he'd despise Lucifer so much if he has to meet him in person. He's all for rebelling against God and not bowing before mankind, not for listening to someone playing the victim and whining about family. (In the end, Lucifer tries to talk Michael out of the big battle... that's not what he was promised!) Uriel'd throw his badge of the Lucifer's fanclub after hearing his first bout of whining. Possibly to Lucifer's face.
If Uriel has to give up on Lucifer (plus side: no more working with demons!!!), then he wouldn't have many options. He'd never work back with Heaven (his point still stands). He could always try to lone-wolf... but he'd have more fun working with Cas.
Obviously, the ever-strategist-Cas would use that to have another angel at the TFW side. Uriel does like the name of the team.
(Imagine Uriel helping Cas during the Civil War against Raphael after the Apocalypse! Everytime they see Balthazar acting like Balthazar they exchange a long-suffering glance. Uriel offers with enthusiasm to be the official executioner for the new Heaven. He meets Dean during the Godstiel arc and goes like "Castiel just understood how are the other angels. I've been here." ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and Dean doesn't find it helpful.)

The Angel of Death
FISTS YOU
And then you Die
Context: my teacher translated the verb “to grasp with one’s hand” as “to fist” since that’s kinda what it literally means, but you can’t translate it like that into English because “to fist” means something ENTIRELY different, but she doesn’t know that.
So she was explaining how they use the verb to describe the angel of death taking your soul — he rips your soul out of you with his fist. Now that’s pretty damn metal, but she said word for word “the angel of death fists you, and then you die” which is the single most terrifying and powerful sentence to ever grace my ears
Op i appreciate the context but i was going to rb anyway no questions asked
