Flowers in the sand & orange in the sky
(Dean/Castiel & Sam/Eileen)
Summary: walking in the sand after a long day at the beach.
ā§Ā°š²Ö¼š¢ SPN summer, prompt #30
It was a quiet night by the ocean.Ā
Eileen had driven up to visit the trio, bringing Jack and Claire after Sam, Dean and Castiel took the first few days to themselves. The sun was dipping after a long day of different beach activities and joining the two kids at the arcade.Ā
Sam was quietly moaning to Eileen, rolling a hair tie from her wrist to pull his hair out of his face. He had been uncomfortable with it from the heat and hadnāt been able to find a bobble that wasnāt going to snap when the smallest of force was exerted; leading to Dean teasing about the clippers.Ā
"Come on, dude. Iāll just keep offering to do it." Dean motioned to his own hair, mimicking the movement of cutting his hair. His hand was in Castielās so he was limited to just the one.Ā
"Dean, itās fine. I donāt need nor want the cut. Iāll trim it again whenever." His fingers twisted around the front strands, tucking them into the short ponytail. "Besides, I like it long."Ā
"Mm, Iām sure Eileen will be braiding it soon." He shot a look towards the two of them, jolting when Castiel nudged him in the ribs.Ā
"Dean. Look at the sunset." The angel pointed to the sky, hues of orange, purple and pink crossing the landscape. His grip tightened around Deanās hand and his thumb absentmindedly stroked his knuckles.Ā
"Right, ācourse Cas. Gladly." Dean nodded, giving a tight-lipped but sweet smile. "We writing our names in the sand next?"Ā
"I believe that is a nice custom." Castiel dragged them down to be closer to the waves, trailing his forefinger through the powdery grains until flowers were drawn. "As are drawings."Ā
Sam and Eileen had stayed a few yards back, Samās hair being fixed by her where it had fallen from the ponytail. "Better?" She spoke, brushing the shorter strands off of his forehead.Ā
"Yes, thank you." He caught her wrist, pressing a kiss to her pulse point. "Much better."Ā
His arm looped around her waist, watching the sea and the sky separately to the other two. Warmth and humidity of the air washed over them all and Eileenās eyes drooped until they were half-lidded. It wasnāt the latest considering sunset happens earlier on in summer but she lowered them into the sand as a mirror of Dean and Castielās actions.Ā
"Should we move over to them?" Her body melted into Samās side, keeping her head facing his to read his lips.
"Not yet. Give them a moment." Sam made sure to enunciate on his longer sentences, not wanting Eileen to feel stuck with her already challenging impairment.Ā
Eileen had her arm around Samās, tilting his chin down with her vacant hand for a kiss. "Is this okay?" She checked, waiting for his affirming nod and for his hand to mimic hers.Ā
"That was more than okay."
Meanwhile, Dean and Castiel had shifted onto their knees, hunched over in the sand to draw. "I take back my teasing, this isnāt so bad." He revelled in the activity, staring up from the names and flowers they had doodled to stare into the seraphimās bright blue eyes. "Youāre really getting into the spirit of this vacation, huh?"Ā
"It seems so. Iām having a great time, Dean. Iād say you are too." Castiel admired Dean too, maintaining eye contact with the olive green of his gaze. "Our time is meaningful, we live in the moment for the sea to wash it away."Ā
"Stop with your big sentences, buddy. Keep drawing." Dean felt a little clichĆ© drawing a heart around their two names besides the flowers Cas was drawing, nudging him in the ribs. "But yeah, itās meaningful."Ā
"And youāre having a good time?"
"Mhm. I think we all needed this. Sam especially, heās been wanting to enjoy an actual vacation since we were little."Ā Dean sat back on his ankles as did Castiel, the pair invading each otherās bubble of space.
"You deserve it." Castiel shifted again to cross his legs.Ā
"Normal feels weird, though. Weāve only felt this peace in bouts of downtime, not a full holiday."Ā
"Maybe not but youāll get used to it. Iāve only observed tourist behaviour from afar so we can become tourists at the same time instead."Ā
"Well, Iāve driven enough and toured the states, all right. Me and Sammy can both read maps well." Dean let out a short huff of a laugh, touching their foreheads together.Ā
Castiel had a faint scent of sea-salt and his usual ozone surrounding him, grounding Dean and urging him to close the gap. Their lips collided in a messy haste, slowing down once the two men melted into it. The moment was quiet and only theirs, the soft crash of the waves and occasional squawk of seagulls registering as nothing but background noise.
"Okay, we definitely shouldnāt go over yet." Sam signed, deciding that using sign language would be easier for Eileenās tired mind.Ā
"I think we should go back soon, get some sleep. Check on Jack and Claire." Eileen signed in response.Ā
Dean and Castiel parted, a smile that he only ever let Sam and Castiel see most of the time showing in the twitching corners of his mouth. The Winchester exhaled a long, shaky breath and a chuckle followed. "Woah there tiger."Ā
"I do not understand that reference nor see a tiger." Cas stated bluntly, making a small āohā sound when Dean waved him off.
A few yards away, Sam squeezed Eileenās shoulder as a signal that they could go over. He made sure her cardigan was fully covering her shoulders as a chill crept in and held a hand out to help her up. They silently settled in next to Dean and Castiel, both couples content with sharing the space and each otherās company.Ā
Purple hues slowly dissipated into the pink ones, creating a more ombre-like look in the horizon. The oranges were vibrant but slowly dulled as the sun dipped lower and lower. Jack and Claire were enjoying the television at the chalet and the other four were peaceful in the sceneryā revelling in the holiday they werenāt used to.Ā
